Girl Running in Santa MonicaThis is the first photo I got during the LA PhotoWalk. After I was on the steps and gave my little speech-thing, I went down right to the water's edge to see what I could find. This little girl was running up the beach to her dad, so I grabbed a quick one while I talked through the shot for the crowd. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, since everything was unplanned.- Trey RatcliffRead the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

We were discussing what makes this photo work so well. S.M. Pier is probably one of the most photographed places in southern CA and it’s hard to make it exciting but of course, this one is. I saw a great video of a presentation by Sam Abell in which he talked about some of the lessons his father had taught him about photography. The most important, in my opinion, was “compose and wait”. I imagine Trey was waiting just for this moment to occur. It did, and made a great shot!

This is fantastic…I love this area, I also got an amazing shot when I visited my sister there last year. You got to love the California Sunset!

This is a very intriguing photo.  What is that girl doing with the digital device (phones?, video game) in her left hand and another in her right hand?  Taking a self portrait? Playing a game while running?  I suppose we’ll never know.  Love the whole scene, except for the guy walking away from us.  I would have taken him out with content aware fill!  But then I don’t make great shots like you do.

Impressive – how did you freeze her like that with an HDR? From RAW? Thanks, Trey

Great shot but I have a question. I am an amateur and one of my favorite shots is of a boy examining a shell on San Diego Bay. I don’t have a model release from the boy or his parents so I’ve always wondered if I could ever use the photo outside of my own personal enjoyment of it. I am guessing that you didn’t get a model release from the Santa Monica girl’s parents so can you give us a quick lesson on when a release might be necessary?
