Time Lapse Photography Syrp Genie Review

Note this review is based on one of the prototypes that I got my hands on while here in Queenstown. I happen to live in the same city in New Zealand as the founders, so getting one was sorta blind luck.

When I got started, I was not at all a Time Lapse expert, so I was very excited to get a device that made everything easier!

What is the Genie?

Here is a little video made by the creators of the Genie.

It’s a beautiful little device that automatically turns, pivots, and slides while taking the photo for you. You program the Genie (not the camera), and it does everything for you! It can simply just rotate on a ballhead or move itself across a slider. You can even be inventive and do strange rope configrations to get the Genie to do all sorts of acrobatics while it takes the photo.

There is an idiot-proof menu system that lets you do timelapses of the stars, clouds, etc. Or, you can go super-manual and control every little bit yourself. After you create your own program, you can save it as a preset for future use.

Time Lapse Example

Here is a video that I made where I use the Genie from SYRP in a few scenes… It’s called 30 Days and 30 Nights in Queenstown.

(In Germany or can’t see the YouTube video? Here is the Vimeo Version.)

Video about the Genie

I recorded this hangout with the founders of the company… you can find out more about the device here.

Is it worth it?

I think so! Anything that can save me time and hassle while also improving the quality is a must-get in my book.

Any clues as to how to set up your camera (Nex-6,7, A7r) with the IR cable and the Genie, specifically the settings in camera for
timelapse. I guess I can’t understand how the IR signal keeps the shutter open for say 10 seconds ???? Thanks for any clues.
