See the Exhibition here on Pinterest: Cropped For Pinterest

I think the internet is the best means for an artist to display his work, and you have to constantly adjust your art so that it can be enjoyed in the medium in which it is communicated. For the main blog here at http://www.StuckInCustoms.com, for example, I keep all the images 900 wide because that is the best way to view them in a blog format.

But Pinterest is different. Long, skinny photos seem to rule the day. And you can do amazing things with that cropping factor. So, I went back through some of my favorite photos and gave them a strategic cropping.

The difference is amazing! Lacking creativity, I would never have thought long and skinny would be so dramatic. Thank you for sharing.

I can appreciate what you have done here as Pinterest users do enjoy long pins, however if you are cropping copyright images without permission from the creators and they aren’t images that are in the public domain, you are in fact breaking the law and perpetuating an infraction against people whose work should receive credit and links to their work.

In case you aren’t aware of it, Pinterest is under fire about copyright issues and if that continues, eventually it will be to Pinterest’s detriment (and everyone that enjoys using it – including me). Unless you are going to credit the source, requesting permission to edit their work and giving CREDIT to every image here – and links to the sources – you’re breaking the law and hurting artists and photographers everywhere –

I don’t support that and if enough people find their work here being perpetuated by you – you may lost the rights to your own domain. I know I’d be royally PD’d if you or someone like you – CROPPED one of my images because YOU want to see it bigger on Pinterest.

That’s my thoughts – contrary to all of the “this is greats’…..

I hope you know these are all Trey’s images, so he can do anything he wants with them? So he doe’s not infringe on anyone’s right here. And as a photographer myself, if somebody cropped any of my images so they see them bigger on Pinterest, but still gave me the credit for the photo, I would be OK with that. I think that’s still in the spirit of CC license, which I believe photographers should use anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/bcr8tive bcr8tive ♥

No I wasn’t aware that these are all the posters images – I’ve seen some of these images and all too often catch people using other people’s images without permission …editing them or posting them without credit – so if they are the bloggers, then great – if not then shame –

But to respond to your CC reference – just because someone posts an image on the internet, does not automatically place it into the Creative Commons category unless they explicitly state that it is – and even though I may be ok with it or YOU may be ok with it – not everyone is – which is why Pinterest is providing a method for sites to PREVENT pinning, like Flickr members for example – anyone that creates imagery, whether its photography or artwork or photos of a product – have and should retain the right to make that choice, since it’s THEIRS.

Miroslav’s reply is correct. These are all Trey’s images.

  • http://twitter.com/bcr8tive bcr8tive ♥

I responded but it wasn’t published (which isn’t necessary since it wasn’t inflammatory. But thus is the nature of a dictatorship eh?)

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

That wasn’t intended. We don’t vet posts before they’re posted, unless it’s just flagged within the system. If it’s in there I’ll approve it; otherwise it just got lost in the ether.

  • Caroline

Wow, I’m in love with your images. Thank you for sharing. I feel exhilarated viewing them. Do you sell prints?

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Hi Caroline,

Yes, if you click through to Smugmug on any image on the blog, there will be a button in the upper right labeled ‘Buy.’ Clicking that will bring you through to print options.

We also have a limited edition series of signed prints on metal. You can email me at luke@stuckincustoms.com for more info.

    beautiful shots!!

What a troll. Clearly you’ve never clicked around Trey Ratcliffe’s blog before. He’s an amazing artist, and the creator of the first HDR image ever to hang in the Smithsonian. This is kind of like trying to tell Mario Andretti that he shouldn’t drive too fast or he could hurt himself, and not to go in circles all the time or he’ll never get anywhere. Jeez.

  • http://twitter.com/How2LiveHappily HowTo LiveHappily

Hey Trey, your pictures rock! Thank you so much for making my day. I took my time to slowly scroll down the page and take a look at each and every one of them … and now I’m in a kind of trance, feeling dizzy, and it’s a very pleasurable feeling.

I wish each of these pics had an individual “pin it” button – because it would make it easy for me to share them all with my followers – and hopefully get more people to experience what I just did. Pinterest is all very nice, but the pictures look much better on this page.

Without such buttons, I’ll just share a few of them. Keep up the good work. You are making the world a better place, and I’m quite convinced that you’re enjoying yourself in the process.

    Have a great day!

P.S. I just pinned this one: http://pinterest.com/pin/516154807263024939/ and would love to have it signed (AKA leave a comment on it).
