Into the Night

Tip: Over-Touristy Places

Venice is definitely over-filled with tourists, but the hottest tip I have is to rest during the day and stay out most of the night, when there are about zero tourists around. For one thing, cruises just dump tons of people in the city during the day, but all of them go back to the boat after sunset, leaving the city just for you. Also, people tend to walk around a LOT during the day, which totally wears them out… so, be like a cat and nap/rest all day, then at night, go out on the prowl!

Daily Photo – Into the Night

Have you noticed I'm adding new Venice photos every other day here for the past week? Yes! I had a huge backlog of these things and decided to crank 'em out. And, even though I've posted a lot of them, I hope you are not getting tired of them earlier!

People Presets

Don’t forget to check out the Lightroom People Presets – it’s my most recent release of presets and I think you’ll really enjoy them. I used one of them to make today’s rather unusual photo! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Fork in Mouth

This is still one of my favorite people-photos. I don't know why, but it just makes me smile. I guess it's funny because she's a cute gal wearing a mask, holding two mobile phones, wearing a camera, and there is no place else for the fork to go but in her mouth.

The Long Boat Ride Home

Barcelona Photo Walk Highlights – Taking Unique Photos

Barcelona was stop 2 on our tour of Europe and we had a great crowd out for the photo walk. It was a completely different but equally awesome atmosphere to Lisbon and our after party was filled with some great people with excellent questions.

Daily Photo – The Long Boat Ride Home

When we took the boat back from Burano to Venice, the water could not have been more smooth. Most of the time, the water between all these islands off the coast of Italy are a little choppy. It's mostly wind that causes it, but there's also quite a bit of boat traffic. This evening, there was neither… It was so magical floating across this glassy mirror and seeing the sunset above and below.

Lisa Bettany in a Venetian Mask

The New HDR Tutorial from Venice

Speaking of Lisa Bettany in today’s daily photo, don’t forget you can see more of her in the new HDR Tutorial we made in Venice! I think you’ll love it!

Daily Photo – Lisa Bettany in a Venetian Mask

While we were in the middle of filming the new HDR Tutorial, we took a bunch of friends over to a masquerade ball in Venice. What a fun night! There was an opera that went all around us while we gorged on food and wine. It was a true Venetian experience! πŸ™‚

Venice at Dusk

Burning Man Collection on Google+

I recently joined the Google+ Create community – a lot of fun there! As part of the process, I made a Google+ Collection all about Burning Man. Enjoy!

Daily Photo – Venice at Dusk

Speaking of the Hasselblad, this is one I took with the first Hasselblad I used, the H1D. It was a great camera, albeit quite bulky and a bit buggy. It was one of the older-style ones that had a huge mirror that would flip up and down… this is one reason it was so giant and bulky! This new X1D I'm using literally must be 25% of the size of that honker… I'm impressed I carried the old one around on a 2-month trip around the world. This new one is so much easier!

Last Sunset in Venice

Netflix Ideas?

Any hot Netflix suggestions? I’m currently into Season 3 of Chef’s Table as well as “Abstract” which is kind of like Chef’s Table but with design. Interesting stuff… I like these deconstructions of artistic practices…

Daily Photo – Last Sunset in Venice

I took this on my final sunset in Venice. I had been there a month, and I still never lost the “bug” to go out and take photos. I decided to go to an area of Venice that was quite far from my hotel. I was getting in the habit of walking over 15,000 steps a day, then eating massive amounts of Italian food at night. Somehow I managed to not gain any weight even though I was constantly feeling guilty about all the gorging!

Colors of Venetian Water

Speaking of Venice

Be sure to grab the NEW HDR Tutorial we filmed in Venice and just released for both Photomatix on Windows and Aurora HDR on Mac! It took me twice as long, but I think it was worth it!

Daily Photo – Colors of Venetian Water

The water in Venice is actually pretty disgusting. My friend Rene can attest to this because he actually fell into it with all his camera equipment! Luckily he survived to tell the tale! Anyway, sometimes during the day it looks less disgusting than usual, but one of the best ways to make it look pretty is to get these sorts of reflections at night!

2 AM in Venice

Bridge Wine

I’d go out every night here with my friends and pretty much follow the same pattern. We’d take sunset photos, wander through the streets and canals, end up and have a fabulous dinner, then buy a bunch of wine and wander the streets more. Every time we came to a bridge we would have bridge wine and take photos. This is one of the photos I somehow achieved.

All of this activity may or may not be related to the night my friend Rene fell in the canal. God it was funny though… I still laugh thinking about it.

It always reminds me of this:

Daily Photo – 2 AM in Venice

This was shot at F/11 and was a 91 second exposure. Yes you read that right! That was one of the things I like most about the Hasselblad β€”you can take exposures longer than 30 seconds without having to use an external trigger. I've never understood that limitation on other cameras. I really don't… it's just software, as far as I know. There are so many things that these camera manufacturers should let us customize! πŸ™‚

Thanks again Bel!

For working hard and making so much great video for the new HDR Tutorial. I think you all will really enjoy it! πŸ™‚

Mini Art Tour at Aro Ha

Ignore that gal below in Yoga pants at your peril. That’s not why I shot this, but it was kind of distracting. I’ll be honest. Anyway, join me as we look at two of my art hangings at Aro-Ha in New Zealand.

Daily Photo – Bel in the Wings

Here's a photo I talked about a little in the new HDR Tutorial, even though it's not HDR. We were in the costume party and got extremely hot, so we decided to step outside and get some of the cool Venice air. After we went out, we were locked outside! And just inside those glass doors was the band, so no one could hear our cries for help. They saw us moving around out there, and just thought we were dancing! πŸ™‚ But, naturally, I had my camera with me and I thought she looked awesome in this shot with the light hitting her.

Night time Carnivale

A favorite photo

This photo is using one of my new post-processing techniques. It’s really hard to describe, and I can’t quite get it into an easily repeatable format yet. So I’m having trouble trying to find a way to teach it! Also, I can’t quite perfect a Lightroom Preset to get this to work… but, I’m trying!

Daily Photo – Night time Carnivale

I'm a big fan of people in costume sitting in streetside cafes enjoying a drink and a snack. In fact, it makes me wish people would do this sort of thing all the time. How cool would it be if everyone in a particular city was in costume 100% of the time. If I was mayor of a city, I think I would make this a law. It'd be totally ridiculous, but I think it might catch on!
