Daily Photo – After the Rains in Venice

This is one of my favorite new photos from Venice! I know I keep saying that over and over and over again, but it's nice to re-visit these places through photos. Even though I have a decent memory, I find these photos in my Lightroom to process and I think, “Oh! I almost forgot about that one!”

Colors and Lines in Venice

Video Recap: Venice from Above

Here’s one of my favorite new videos… all about Venice!

Daily Photo – Colors and Lines in Venice

I love mixing together different levels of detail and smoothness in a photo. I think it's important to have a series of transitions. This one has many transitions, jumping from smooth dull colors to riotous textured colors to bright smooth areas to dull-colored highly textured areas. It's a fun way to process a photo because it comes out a little different every time, and I'm not ever sure I could re-create this.

Daily Photo – Morning in Venice at the Gondolas

Continuing on our Venice-Theme for the month (sorry again about all the Venice photos!), this was sort of a special morning because it was the first time we had sun in over a week! It was dreary and foggy for a long time. I love all that moody stuff for sure, but it was a nice change of pace to have the sun blast out at us!

The Last Sunset in Venice

Live on Facebook

Here’s our latest live broadcast with Jing Song at her vineyards!

Sheep

I don’t know if you follow ROBOT TREY on Snapchat (treyratcliff), but he’s recently been very confused by how I at one time had four sheep in our back paddock and then I returned home from a trip to see there are now 18.

Daily Photo – The Last Sunset in Venice

I had been waiting for ages for a nice sunset in Venice. I think I was here about a month, waiting waiting waiting… then on the last night, we got these kind of clouds. Rene and I were walking around like giddy schoolkids… taking photos right and left! I use Google Fit on my Android… this day I walked 17,000 steps!

Daily Photo – Strange Coincidences in Venice

Here's a funny story. So, at night, my friends and I would go out and take photos and carry wine, cheese, and crackers. Anyway, we were out one night and we have a tradition where every bridge we cross we have a sip of wine. We call it bridge wine, you see. Anyway, we were on a bridge and there was a very friendly German lady who was away on her first vacation in a long time. We offered her bridge wine and she took it and started just chugging it saying afterwards, “I love this country! You can drink anywhere I am so happy!” Haha… Curtis and I thought that was so funny. Then she had us use her phone to take a photo of her with the bridge wine.

Anyway, four days later I am walking around St. Mark's Square taking photos. I saw this cool lady and took her photo. She came over to me afterwards, pulled out her mobile phone, and showed me the picture of her having bridge wine!

A Steamy Carnivale

Want to know my favorite place to go find crazy or funny or surprising videos? I pop over the Reddit and sort by the top videos by the month. Try it!

Daily Photo – A Steamy Carnivale

Two of my favorite things combined in this photo, Steampunk and Venice! I don't know where these two came from… they were really nice. They had some kind of strange Hungarian accent or something. I could barely understand them. They came over and secretly told me: “You should come back to see us tomorrow. We are going to be Steampunk Wampires!”

Saint Mark’s Tower from Above

Life from Above and Beyond

Here’s a video that shows this same scene in video form!

Daily Photo – Saint Mark's Tower from Above

This was the first sunny morning after about 8 straight days of overcast! So we fueled up the drone and decided to go out and get some shots. On this day, there were a lot of military and police in the square. We were very obvious when flying it (how can you not be?), and the military guys came over and were watching the screen. They thought it was so cool and no one told us to stop. On another occasion, at night, however, they did come over and tell us to stop. But that was a different group of people… They were all very nice though and there were no repercussions.

Serious Photographers

Have you noticed there are quite a few photographers that take themselves QUITE seriously? I don’t really hang out with a lot of other photographers… but I was thinking about this in Venice when I was walking around St. Mark’s square and random photographers were everywhere. So many of them were SO serious… walking around and scowling… getting that shot… it’s such a funny thing to me.

Daily Photo – Nonstop Photos at Carnevale

Sometimes it's hard to tell if these are models hired by professional photographers or if they are just regular people that are dressed up! Like, this girl for example, when I came upon her, there was some guy bossing her around. But then I realized it was the same guy that I had seen a few hours ago. I was taking photos of another girl for about five minutes. She was obviously a free agent, just wandering about. But then this guy came up and starting bossing her around, telling her where to stand and stuff. He wasn't too nice about it either… and then he took photos and walked away! There's actually a few people like that out there… so strange, I think!

Venetians Hate This Calatrava Bridge

Bag Awards!

What’s in my bag and what’s the Best Bag? I just voted, and I voted for the Peak Design Everyday Messenger that I helped design. There’s a Vote going on over on Carryology about your favorite bag. Seems to be a good voting thing because they don’t want your email or FB registration or anything. I guess they do it by IP address or something.

This video below shows my bag and what’s inside of it! You can see a full listing of what is in my bag right here.

More on Calatrava

My dad first introduced me to this radical architect… and even though what I say below is pretty critical, if you look at this Google Search on his designs, well you can see they are pretty badass!

Daily Photo – Venetians Hate This Calatrava Bridge

Yeah, I can't tell you how many people I talked to in Venice that just don't have a single good word to say about this somewhat famous (infamous?) bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava. It's pretty, yes, as you can see. But most of it is glass, and you walk on glass to get over. The glass isn't even see-through. It's just slippery as hell. And I can definitely see how it is slippery in the rain, but it must be a nightmare when it freezes. There's also countless stories of people losing control of themselves and tumbling over the side into the Venice canals!

1,000 Bridges

Drone Recommendations?

You might see over on the DJI Phantom Review page that I’ve changed my recommendations and now suggest the Phantom 4. It is more expensive, yes, but that obstacle avoidance is BIG. Really, if you don’t have it, you might destroy 2 or 3 of the other Phantoms with honest mistakes with obstacles. So, you see, in the end, you save money and heartache! :)

Daily Photo – 1,000 Bridges

I don't think there are actually 1,000 bridges in Venice, but there might be! There must be at least 500, and every one of them is quite unique in its own way. I think even the most hardcore photographer at some point puts on blinders… and you cross yet another bridge and you say to himself, “Yet another bridge,” and you don't take a photo. This happens to me a lot there, so now I do kind of force myself to slow down, see what is unique about this particular bridge and canal system, and try to take a shot at it.
