Daily Photo – Bel in the Wings

Here's a photo I talked about a little in the new HDR Tutorial, even though it's not HDR. We were in the costume party and got extremely hot, so we decided to step outside and get some of the cool Venice air. After we went out, we were locked outside! And just inside those glass doors was the band, so no one could hear our cries for help. They saw us moving around out there, and just thought we were dancing! πŸ™‚ But, naturally, I had my camera with me and I thought she looked awesome in this shot with the light hitting her.

Night time Carnivale

A favorite photo

This photo is using one of my new post-processing techniques. It’s really hard to describe, and I can’t quite get it into an easily repeatable format yet. So I’m having trouble trying to find a way to teach it! Also, I can’t quite perfect a Lightroom Preset to get this to work… but, I’m trying!

Daily Photo – Night time Carnivale

I'm a big fan of people in costume sitting in streetside cafes enjoying a drink and a snack. In fact, it makes me wish people would do this sort of thing all the time. How cool would it be if everyone in a particular city was in costume 100% of the time. If I was mayor of a city, I think I would make this a law. It'd be totally ridiculous, but I think it might catch on!

The Last Canal

Watch the whole new HDR Tutorial!

Today’s daily photo is absolutely one of my favorite creations from Venice. And I made a lot of photos I really like from that trip (this is not always the case). Anyway, you have two options for watching the new HDR Tutorial that was filmed in Venice. One, you can get and download the whole thing from the store or you can subscribe to the new monthly Passport and it’s included for free! Those of you that are logged into the Passport will see one of the videos below.

A Christmas Present?

If you’re a Passport holder, why not get one for a friend for Christmas? It’s one of those unique gifts that keeps giving all of 2017! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – The Last Canal

I had been in Venice for about three weeks. That's a long time to be anywhere. And no, I wasn't tired of being there, but there was a bit of a feeling like, “Okay, I've had enough β€” let's move on!” But that didn't stop me from going out on my final night to take more photos. And boy, was I ever glad I did! I was able to find this new spot as well as a few others. That city will never cease to amaze me with all the photo gifts around every corner!

Walking Home Again

Intense HDR

I used the new Aurora HDR 2017 to make this photo. Obviously, sometimes I go more extreme than others. As of the time of writing this, I’m about halfway done with the new HDR Tutorial. This is one of the photos from the Venice trip where we filmed the thing. Fun times!

Daily Photo – Walking Home Again

I probably stayed at least four weeks at the amazing Hotel O'lorogio in Venice. It's a great place and the team there is amazing. Wow, what a fun time! Anyway, there was basically only one way back to the hotel, and it was over a small bridge that gave this view. One evening, I stopped to take my time and capture this scene.

Ponte dell’Accademia at Sunrise

Alan Watts Video

Here’s one of my favorite videos I made last year… you’ll recognize the photo below from the first scene of the movie!

Daily Photo – Ponte dell'Accademia at Sunrise

I was in Venice for about a month, out taking photos every morning at sunrise all the way through the sunset. Then there was always lots of heavy Italian food and bridge-wine on the way home with my friends. I'm not quite sure how I survived it or how I got up at every sunrise. I'm a trooper! But I guess we don't want to miss any sunrises like this, do we?

Happy Wayne on a Boat

The Colors are Coming Back

I’ve now been in New Zealand almost five years. I’m loving that there are 4 seasons that are pretty much exactly 3 months long. We didn’t have that back in Texas… So now we’re coming out of Winter and Spring is definitely in full force. All our trees and getting nice and colorful again, giving me the urge to go out and shoot! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Happy Wayne on a Boat

Here's a fun quick shot that was taken during our amazing workshop in Venice. We took everyone out to Burano for the day then boated back to Venice just after the sun set. There was an amazing quality to the light here as you can see. And you can also see the great Wayne Norrie getting more than a little excited with Deanie! πŸ™‚

I can't imagine what it is like to get so fixed up and then walk around and pose for 10 hours a day. Maybe that's what it's like to be a woman all the time?!?! hehe I don't know… But it was great from my point of view, being on the other side of the camera! πŸ™‚

Accademia Bridge

New Tip Video

In case you missed it, the pre-order for the new Aurora HDR 2017 is available for order now. Here’s a hot tip video on Denoise!

Daily Photo – Accademia Bridge

I like this photo, but I don't think it's the best one over made from this standpoint by a longshot. This is a very famous scene from Venice and most people that go there get this shot. I'm not so much of a “shot collector” but it is too pretty to resist. And even though I've crossed this bridge probably 50+ times, I'm never had “perfect” conditions (which I would consider a stunning sunrise with amazing clouds). That's okay… but I'm still pretty happy with this photo.

If you click through the Venice category, you may see a few other interpretations of this scene I've taken as well.

Smooth Duck on the water

Venice from Above

You’ll see some of Burano in this video below! I never made it to Burano until my 4th trip here, but now I recommend it to everyone to see right away!

Daily Photo – Sooth Duck on the water

I forgot where I first heard this funny line… it refers to ducks look really smooth on the water, but underneath their little duck feet are going crazy. One night our team came back from Burano to Venice on these awesome boats. I couldn't believe how smooth the water actually was… reminded me of that saying.

Crossing the wooden bridge in Venice

The New Travel / Map Area

We’re still working to refine everything with the new map function on the site β€” please let me know if you have any feedback! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Crossing the wooden bridge in Venice

There are three huge bridges that cross the grand canal in Venice, and this is one of the most famous views. I'm always impressed at these feats of engineering… I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during the original construction in the olden days. It occurs to me I don't even really have any idea how bridges are even built! I kind of have an idea, but I don't think I could actually build one, or, at least, not one I was willing to walk on myself.
