Stopping in the Bay of Naples for some Dinner

I always wonder what it would be like to have a non-stop boat-lifestyle. Having a boat… sailing up and down the Italian riviera… stopping in one little town for a snack… going to an abandoned grotto for some diving… sailing to a new port for dinner at sunset… I think that would be a nice life, eh?

This was shot in Naples. The city has a beautiful castle jutting out into the Bay of Napoli. It overlooks a cool harbor, a thriving shop and restaurant area, and Mount Vesuvius looming on the horizon.

I was told to closely watch all my camera gear and bags while walking around Naples. There’s supposed to be a lot of crime, and I don’t doubt it. But I didn’t see any while there. The biggest problem was only have 15 hours of daylight to shoot, and I felt like I was a bit robbed by the god of time.

The Caves of the Amalfi Coast

Giant caves were carved into the sea-wall. You can see how huge they are by that tiny-sized Italian man in his Euro-suit.

Naples Cafe in the Evening

When I was in Italy I passed this cool outdoor cafe so I decided to grab a shot. The light was very good with the setting sun plus the warm oranges of the lights around the cafe itself.

Shafts and Masts

This is one of my favorite pictures of Naples in Italy. There is a marina down by the castle that overlooks Vesuvius and Pompeii. I took this one very early in the morning, just after the sun rose over the dormant volcano.

Vesuvius from the Sky

Here is one of my favorite pictures I took in Italy of Mount Vesuvius from an airplane, taken as I was leaving Naples.

Italian Morning

Oh this is just another shot from a morning in Italy… Life is a little different over there, you know?

Morning Rainstorm over Vesuvius and Pompeii

On the morning I left Naples, I went to the top of my hotel to eat breakfast on the roof, and I saw these incoming clouds and a rain over Vesuvius. So, naturally, I had to grab my ever-present camera.

Sunrise at the Docks of Naples

Here is one of the best pictures I took in Naples. This was taken about 6 AM near the ballistrade to the Castle d’Ovo, overlooking the docks and Mount Vesuvius in the background, along the Amalfi Coast.

Four Caves of Napoli

This is a part of the rougher part of the Amalfi Coast where waves have torn away four huge caves in the sea wall. It’s hard to see how huge these caves are, but each one is over 100 feet tall.

Aqua Grotto

This was a cool little find in the bay of Naples.

Private Cave

In my Navy SEAL-like zodiac ride around the bay of Napoli, I found this ruin with a cave underneath. My guide told me that this was used by ancient Romans as a fish farm, but then again, he was a drunk Italian.

Faces of Italy

I’m leaving Italy today… Between meetings I had time to explore around with my camera and iPod in overdrive. I saw a lot of interesting faces, so I collected a series of portraits that I have collected into a little portfolio set on Flickr called “What they Dream and What they Do”. If I ever saw someone with an interesting face, I thought perhaps they might have an interesting story too, so I’ve organized the set by the motif of what people do with their lives. Here are the first eight pictures from the series. I will probably add to this collection in the future, or at least until I ask to take someone’s picture and they punch me in the face.

I woke up early this morning and saw this out of my window, so I went across the street to get a picture.

The Amalfi Coast by Night

After Pompeii, we visited Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast for dinner. We stopped in an incredibly dangerous cliffside by speeding drunk Italians to take this picture.
