Here’s a great Kickstarter project! It’s a very cool device you can use to make some incredible time lapse sequences. I’m buying one!
And even better, the founders, Ben & Chris, will be Live on Monday night’s show with me. We’re trying something new, and you can watch live here on StuckInCustoms.com. The show starts at 7 PM PST (Your World Time). Just look at the blog here a bit before that and you’ll see the YouTube Live Embedded Player.
Daily Photo – The Griffith Observatory
This was a very fun night in LA.
I went up to the Griffith Observatory with Tom to grab a photo. I had always heard about this spot, but never made it up there to take photos of my own. The conditions are very difficult, and the parking was quite rough. After a long walk and deciding on a shot, I set up for what you see here…
Eric Cheng, Ron Brinkmann, Mike Wiacek, Michelle Robinson, and Angela B Pan join me as we do a little show and tell with what is in our camera bags. Eric wins right off the bat and even Tony Wang and Dave Veffer get in on the fun too. We discuss bags, gear, and show off some of our recent photos.
Daily Photo – The Starlight in Downtown Los Angeles
Here is a crazy spot I found thanks to sweet sweet Stuck On Earth. I’ve been to downtown LA many times, and there are many good angles, but I think this one is just about one of the best.
There was a lot of waiting around, however. I had to wait for big busses to pass me on either side so I could set up for the long exposure.
Usually, I’ll take 5 exposures in these situations, but I do something a little special. I’ll take the quicker exposures right away (often 1 or 2 seconds). And then I’ll pause and wait for a bus or something before taking the longer exposures. I create the HDR then mask in the tail lights from the photos where I get the best trails. I made that sound easier than it is, I think.
NPR featured Stuck On Earth the other day. You can listen to the audio bit of it here! And thanks again to everyone that came to the very special Stuck on Earth session in San Francisco – that was a great time!
Fun in LA
Thanks again everyone for coming out for the photowalks lately! I know it takes a lot of time and effort — so I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do. And yes, I plan on coming to [your area] at some point in the future… since I want to go everywhere, why wouldn’t I come there?
Daily Photo – The Pier in Santa Monica
After we finished shooting down on the beach, we moved the photowalking party up to the pier. There was just an edge of light left when I took this photo.
The dock is in two parts. The first part has the amusement park and the second part extends further out into the sea. Sometimes docks aren’t so great for night shots because they are shaky and move with the waves. But this one was pretty solid — I suppose because of the rides and whatnot that also need to be stable. Anyway, it was more than steady enough for the very long exposures need for the shot.
Today’s photo really took two different cameras… that is, unless I had two cameras ready to go, I never would have gotten it. Do any of you walk around with a two-camera setup as well?
Daily Photo – Late for a Very Important Date
I spent most of one morning shooting in Union Station in Los Angeles, and I highly recommend this to any photographer! Not only did they let me use my tripod, but there are all kinds of cool people-watching along the way.
My tripod was set up for an HDR of the interior, but I saw this couple walk in and start doing, well, whatever they are doing. I had my hip-shooter on, so I squatted down to take this shot…
I mentioned this yesterday after I edited the post later in the day, but I decided to go ahead and embed the video now as well. This was made by William Beem when we were together, shooting the Disney castle…
PhotoWalk Live Stream
Watch it here. We had only half an idea for the Austin Photowalk – to have the always-unpredictable Gino Barassa follow us around and do a live Hangout from the event. The video quality is REALLY bad, but you still get a sense of the event in a way… and an accidental shot inside the women’s bathroom…
Thanks to Keith Barrett and Dave Veffer for helping it happen!
Daily Photo – Girl Running in Santa Monica
And speaking of PhotoWalks, this is the first photo I got during the LA PhotoWalk. After I was on the steps and gave my little speech-thing, I went down right to the water’s edge to see what I could find. This little girl was running up the beach to her dad, so I grabbed a quick one while I talked through the shot for the crowd. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out, since everything was unplanned.
