Riding on the Glacier and the New Pinterest Uploads

New Pinterest Uploads!

Adding a ton of supa-fresh Pinterest-cropped works over there at http://www.pinterest.com/treyratcliff/pins/ – enjoy! I really have quite a bit of fun re-cropping my photos to fit that format in the optimal way… and the way they all fall down the page like colorful rain is trippy and fun…

Daily Photo – Riding on the Glacier

When we had the crew from The Arcanum out here not too long ago, we took an amazing ride with Choppy to this glacier. And I love the way Choppy says it — kind of like “glassssier” – so smooth, just like her! Anyway, after landing, I ran away from the heli to turn around and take this quick shot!

Making Bad Decisions with Stu in Auckland

Enjoying the Creation Wars!

I have a new Playlist on YouTube that has links to all our Creation Wars shows. Check it out and you can watch all the shows! :)

Daily Photo – Making Bad Decisions with Stu in Auckland

My friend Stu has an awesome bach not too far from Auckland. It's up on top of a cliff, and the perfect place to make lots of bad decisions. Stu is really into fire, you see. Actually, I have noticed a very strong pyromaniac gene amongst many Kiwis. I don't know why this is… maybe because it gets cold here a lot, kids just learn to play with and love fire. Somehow, this quickly jumps the gap into explosives. And that's what we started doing here… there was quite a bit of chaos, especially when it fell over and started shooting in random directions!

DJI Inspire and HDR Photos

HDR Tutorial

I know many of you already have my new HDR Tutorial, but wanted share this little promo below for all the new people that come to the blog from time to time!

First Inspire Photo

I put that photo on yesterday’s blog post – check it out in case you missed it! :)

Daily Photo – HDR Photos and the DJI Inspire

Because the Inspire gives you manual control over the camera, you can take full-on proper HDR photos!

The current version of the software I am using is a little clunky, but it is all controlled through the iPad. I can set the shutter speed or adjust the exposure compensation. I can't seem to adjust the ISO, as that seems to float, but I'm working on that. The UI controls don't always work so well, but I think they'll work out the bugs. For the photo below, I took 4 different exposures at 4 different shutter speeds. The Inspire was SO STEADY in the air that I was able to get them to automatically align very well in Photomatix. Anyway, these are early tests, but this is very encouraging!

My first photo with the DJI Inspire

First DJI Inspire HDR Photo coming tomorrow!

What’s the DJI Inspire? It’s the coolest new quadcopter (see my DJI Phantom review in the meantime) – it is a bit bigger than the last one and has an amazing system for video and photos. I’ll write a big review of it at some point here… but it shoots 4K video and streams it right back to your iPad. It shoots great photos in RAW — man it just seems to do everything! I’m just now learning how to use it, but I wanted to share a few early things here with you.

And since the camera shoots in Manual mode, I can take HDR Photos with it! I’ll post that one tomorrow! :)

Daily Photo – Morning Fog and Clouds over Queenstown, New Zealand

I had my first flight today with this incredible machine! I went out in my backyard (this is at 6:30 AM here in Queenstown btw!), and took off for the air straight away. This is a pano made out of 4 different photos. It is really fun and easy to fly — and the software is incredible. Here's one thing that surprised me: You can take photos with the camera in manual mode! How cool is that?

Pig Island and Pigeon Island

A New Perspective

Believe it or not, the same islands from below are seen here, from ground level! It kind of reminds you of how completely mind-blowing things are from above!

Daily Photo – Pig Island and Pigeon Island

We flew with Choppy over these amazing tiny islands in the middle of Lake Wakatipu on the way to a really cool ranch. They say that these islands are so named because they look like those animals from above. Well, here I am, and I can't say that I see it! Can you? I'm not even sure which is which. I assume “pig” is the bigger one, but, well, it doesn't look so piggy.

Entering Hobbiton

Upcoming PhotoWalks

I’ll work on getting a page up soon that has a list of all the upcoming PhotoWalks… I’m thinking that Hong Kong, London, Berlin, and Venice are on the agenda for early 2015! :)

Daily Photo – Entering Hobbiton

You may remember a scene from Lord of the Rings when Gandalf is riding into Hobbiton in the beginning of the movie. He goes right down this little amazing rock-lined lane. It's still here, and even more magical than in the movies. This is one of many ways into visiting the 44 Hobbit holes!

The Milky Way over Milford Sound

Low F-Stops on Star Shots

Veterans already know this, so you guys can just skip over this part! But if you’re just starting to get into star photography, one of the most important things is having a low f-stop on your lens. This means a LOT of light can get in over the exposure. For example, this was taken at f/1.4. The downside to this is that these lenses often tend to be much more expensive! But, then again, you can end up with shots like this one below! :)

Daily Photo – The Milky Way over Milford Sound

My friend Cliff and I stayed out late one night in Milford Sound to see the Milky Way. We were not disappointed! Sometimes it gets pretty cloudy over here, and there was just one night, so we were hoping that karma paid off, and it did!

Eating dinner in Hobbiton

Facebook Page

Don’t forget that we switched my account over to an official “Trey Ratcliff Facebook Page” – thanks for stopping by to “Like” it! :)

Daily Photo – Eating dinner in Hobbiton

Ahh, just another dinner here in New Zealand. We eat like this most every night around here…

I wish! Well, maybe sometimes we do… This is part of the grand feast they have on the Hobbiton Movie Set. If you sign up for the last tour of the day, then you can stay for this ridiculous dinner. I super-recommend it! At one point, there was a huge food fight!

Stars over the Party Tree in Hobbiton

A little behind-the-scenes

Here’s a fairly random video that we shot while on the Hobbiton Movie Set. We were doing a few videos for The Arcanum! It also shows some other random stuff during a little New Zealand adventure…

Daily Photo – Stars over the Party Tree in Hobbiton

I know I post a lot of photos from Hobbiton, so you gotta give me a break! haha… It's so pretty there. On this particular night, we were out very late shooting… it turned out to be kind of a small photowalk! A few people from a tour spotted us and came over to say hello, so we invited them right along. Whenever I do shots like this, it makes me wonder why I don't go out every night!
