Yoga in Hobbiton

A lot of Yoga!

Some of you may recognize Bel from today’s photo below… here she is doing some more in this How-To HDR video we made. This is from the “Complete HDR Tutorial” which I highly recommend! :)

Daily Photo – Yoga in Hobbiton

This is my friend Bel (from above) doing a bit of impromptu yoga on the Hobbiton Movie Set on the old stone bridge before the watermill.

We were there with Curtis and Pete while working on some new videos. She's our awesome videographer, but we could not shoot for about 30 minutes because some weedwackers were going crazy and the audio was a mess. She said, “How about if I do some yoga on that bridge?” It seemed like a random and good idea so I got in position for this shot and we went for it! This was early in the morning before Hobbiton officially opened, so some of the staff was watching quite nervously, hoping she didn't fall in!

A nice view of The Remarkables

The Burn

If you ever get up to this secret spot in Queenstown, be sure to visit “The Burn” where there is an amazing little lake with a smooth reflection for a clean shot of these mountains in the morning…

Daily Photo – High Atop Deerpark Heights – The Remarkables

This is one of the best views of the awesomely named Remarkables that I have ever seen… I was so happy to get to the top of Deer Park Heights — I hope they open it up to the photographic public soon and stop with all the family feuds… no one Really Likes Richard Dawson anyway. Is that is name? You know, the smarmy guy from Running Man?

The Barn at Lake Hayes between Arrowtown and Queenstown

You’ve heard me mention my friend’s amazing cottage you can rent here on Lake Hayes. It’s called The Barn at Lake Hayes and you can actually see it in this photo over on the far right!

Daily Photo – The Amazing Mirror Lake

This lake is perfectly smooth maybe only one out of ten days. One day we were flying over it with Choppy from Over The Top Helicopters, and it was mirror-glass-smooth! So amazing! I asked her to take the chopper down nice and low so we could get a clean shot. I set the camera to manual mode and amped up the shutter speed to make sure I got a clean shot. Wow, what a view! I'm glad it came out as awesome in the final photo as it looked when I was there!

And this is Pickles

Pickles in Action

You can see Pickles “in action” in this little video we made below for the tutorial called “Organize Your Photos!

Daily Photo – And this is Pickles

Pickles is the cat that lives in Hobbiton.

Pickles is always there and will never pay you any mind unless pickles chooses to mind. And if you want to take a photo of pickles, well he doesn't mind.

Be sure to sign up for our newsletter — we’ll announce when this new tutorial is available. I’ve been working hard on it, and now all the Stuck In Customs elves are working on getting it all packaged up and ready for you! :)

Daily Photo – The Clouds of Hobbiton

There seem to be epic clouds over Hobbiton almost all the time! So amazing and wonderful, isn't it, the way the accumulate and float around. I've been here to Hobbiton probably 9 times now, and I always get interesting clouds at various puffy-levels. This one is maximum puff!

Through the Wetlands

A Top 10 Hike

If you come to the Queenstown area, be sure to hit this hike in Glenorchy. I need to make a list of the top 10 hikes around here… oh but if I had the time to make all the lists I wanted to make and do all the things I wanted to do!

Daily Photo – Through the Wetlands

We were here early one morning. The most amazing thing happened, although you can't see it in this photo. The sun came over the mountain and started hitting all the millions of ice crystals that covered the morning grasses. It created a myriad of rainbows – like a thousand glittering jewels – I'll never forget it. I took some more pictures of this… I will see if I can re-capture the mood. Until then, a study of the light and shapes and the path…

The Most Amazing Golf Hole in the World

Crazy Golf Holes

What other crazy golf holes do you know of? This must be in the top 10!

Daily Photo – The Most Amazing Golf Hole in the World

Look at this amazing golf hole! It's a single golf hole, way on top of Cecil peak. You can see Queenstown down below. The only way to get here is by chopper, and, well, Choppy! You can see her standing there on the green after just sinking a super long putt. I was up here with Curtis, Pete, Varina, and Frederick. Everyone was trying desperately to putt the ball in. She stepped up and sank it on stroke one!

It's not just a green — there are tee-boxes way up above too. There are a few, in fact, all of which use the same green.

Choppy says she came up with the idea because her dad had a fantasy-golf-hole calendar… and she thought, one day, she would build it!

Denver PhotoWalk & Taking a break on the hike

Denver PhotoWalk!

I need a Denver Expert to help me plan a route and stuff! Any volunteers?

I’ve never done a PhotoWalk in Denver and I am excited! I’ll be there (by accident via a long international connection from Yellowstone to Bangkok) for about 10 hours, and I thought it would be fun to come see the city, take photos, and meet you all! Let’s do it…

For the LATEST EVENT INFO, check this Google+ Event page!

Date: Saturday, July 19
Time: 6PM
Location: TBD
Route: TBD! :)
Cost: Free
What Levels are invited? All levels, from Beginner to Advanced, from Mobile Phones to DSLRs!
Prizes: Yes! I’ll give away a free copy of my latest Lightroom Presets to everyone who shows up! :)
Family Friendly? Yes, bring the kids!
Afterparty? Probably! TBD!

If you’ve never been to one of these, they are very fun! I’ll be setting up in various locations to take photos. I’ll talk through all my settings. I’ll talk about compositions or ideas… I also talk a lot about shots that I don’t take and why I don’t take them… anyway, I’m there for questions or, well, anything!

Fake Reflection Shots

I never fake my reflection shots, and here is a good way to tell. Now, even before telling you this, I suppose, naturally, it is possible to fake it the way I am telling you, but it is just a lot harder, I guess! Anyway, if you look at all the structures above the water, you’ll see that not all of them are in the reflection because of my angle. As just a little example, you can see all the mountains in the top, but not in the bottom. If you ever see EXACTLY the same thing, either it is faked, or the camera has to be like one inch above the water!

You can also see this effect in a previous photo I posted while over Lake Hayes. Just click on the “New Zealand” link above in the category to find that one! :)

Daily Photo – Taking a break on the hike

While at that amazing retreat called “Aro-Ha” here near Queenstown, we'd take amazing hikes every day… and had so much fun! Here, we stopped for a little break by this perfect little pond. It's amazing to me how many picture-perfect spots are all over the landscape here… I'll never get used to it!

Isabella on the Path and Pandacraft!

Speaking of Isabella – how to make rubber-band jewelry

Here’s a cute video my daughter made… and there’s a little surprise grammar lesson at the end by the panda on her left! :)

Daily Photo – Isabella on the Path

We had a great overnight camping trip out past Glenorchy by the Greenstone River. Well, it was not really pure full-on camping because there was an old house there that we slept inside. We headed out on a few little hikes here and there, and on the way, I stopped to take this photo of Isabella. I asked her to stand right in the middle, so while she was looking down to get herself in the middle, I snapped this one.
