Venice Sinking Into a Flood

Daily Photo – Venice Sinking Into a Flood

Some nights the water comes up so high that St. Mark’s square starts to flood. While unfortunate, it’s actually mega awesome for photography! Rene and I would swing by this square every single night to see if there was a flood…

This is one of those situations where my shoes and socks are soaked while I am squatting down with my tripod. In order to get a good reflection shot in these situations, you have to get really low and close to the ground. I always watch people’s reactions to my strange positions. The muggles think I am crazy but I know when I may eye contact with another photographer because they give me a knowing nod.

Where Daenerys Targaryen Dragon-Roasted The Slavers

Daily Photo – Where Daenerys Targaryen Dragon-Roasted The Slavers

Here’s another one of the images from my 1000 Stories from 1000 Places NFT drop. It sold out in minutes, but they are now available to trade on OpenSea and X2Y2, etc so be sure to check them out.

This is a Aït Benhaddou, an incredible kasbah near Ouarzazate, Morocco. I’ve always wanted to visit this place ever since I saw it in Gladiator. It’s the place where Russell Crowe was taken on a stretcher and where he learned to become a gladiator. You may also remember it if you watch Game of Thrones. It’s one of the spots where Daenerys took her dragons with the unsullied.

I don’t set up for a lot of selfies because I’m not a vapid Instagram influencer that tries to sell you a special tea that helps your chakras. However, this is a rare selfie.

A Wine and Sunset Adventure in Cape Town

Daily Photo – A Wine and Sunset Adventure in Cape Town

After massive immigration problems (and literally getting Stuck In Customs in Botswana), I finally made it to Cape Town. We had a ton of fun there together! On my first full day, my friend Neville had planned an amazing trip through the wine country. I went to probably one of the most awesome wineries in the world there… I’ve forgotten the name now. It was so good I forgot a lot, in fact. But, I didn’t forget to take this sunset photo as we were leaving.

This particular location in The Shard doesn’t really have a very easy way to take this photo, or at least from the area I found myself in. The direction the sun was facing required some rather difficult window-maneuvering. They don’t really have any windows that face this direction except for one little bit that juts out.

The Edges Of Dubai

This is the first city I visited in the UAE before going to Abu Dhabi. Both were great, but Dubai is better for city photography because it feels very sci-fi. I took this on the way to Italy for Carnivale.

Side note… I was almost arrested twice here. One time, it was quite late and my friend Rene and I got back to the hotel. A pretty girl came up and started talking to us because we had cameras. She was Iranian and very nice and fun, possibly because she was quite drunk. And, out of nowhere, private security pounced on us and whisked us away to a little interrogation, Turns out she was some Iranian princess or something and we had no idea.

We got to spend the day here after a helicopter dropped us off from the main New Zealand base. It was amazing to be here and I can’t imagine living here 100 years ago. It has been meticulously re-done by an incredible group of people committed to showing exactly how it was during the time of those original explorers. It’s too bad that it is almost impossible to visit… but hats off to the tremendous work that went into it!

The Space Between Here and There

Oh, and there is something special about this NFT… In this collection of 1k1k, there are six uber-uniques. That means if you are holding this in your wallet on March 31st 2023, you can have the full print shipped to you! The real-life prints range in price from $35,000 USD to $95,000 USD, and you’ll join amazing collectors like Edward Norton and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Now on with the story.

I woke up with a dead rabbit beside me.

I know this isn’t the sort of thing one wants to hear when looking at this timeless and Hawking-esque beauty, but it is the strange truth.

I arrived at sunset at this remote and beautiful church in the middle of the south island of New Zealand. There were quite a few people milling about, taking countless mobile-phone photos of themselves holding the church in their little fingers or using selfie-sticks. I think they are just perhaps making a visual diary, or trying to create a story of themselves, which is fine and okay.

My plan was to stay late and sleep outside. I had my sleeping bag and my friend Stu was there. We set up our bags by the church, had a few glasses of wine, put on some music, and talked about nonsensical things and laughed into the night. Around 3 AM, my alarm went off, so I slipped out of my bag to capture this scene. The next morning the supine rabbit appeared between Stu and me. We were bewildered and laughing.

On the main continent of Antarctica are countless glaciers that spill out across the landscape. This was located in the Dry Valleys, where a helicopter took me out to camp for about a week.

There was absolutely no one around, and there is a strange loneliness standing near something so daunting and timeless. I would walk along the edge for miles, occasionally stepping over ice-boulders or across icy streams to touch its surface.

Chinatown in London around midnight. It was the evening before the Chinese New Year and everyone was getting pretty excited. The next night was to be absolute chaos, but this night things still had a nice electricity in the air.

I also made a little video here of what things looked and felt like… sometimes I record little videos here and there to remind myself. I don’t usually publish them because the editing takes so long! So I just kind of save them for myself. It helps when I edit the photo later to remind me of how things felt at the time.

A great revelation I came to in Africa was how much I loved elephants. It’s not like I hated them beforehand… who could hate an elephant? But my care-level for them was somewhere between indifference and like. What ended up quite surprising me was how peaceful and interesting I found the creatures to be. I think they operate on a different time scale. I also sometimes wonder if they are in another universe, but just appear to be in ours.
