Sunrise vs. Sunset Panic

Even though I love a good sunset or sunrise, now most of mine have an element of “panic” built into them.  No matter how  much I prepare, there are always last-minute adjustments in my camera settings, location, composition, and other miscellaneous things that are happening.  I rarely go to a “special lookout” where a bunch of other photographers go.  Those can be kind of easy… because you just kind of chill out and wait around like everyone else.  There are SOME locations like that, but for the most part, I’m trying to squeeze out as many photos, compositions, and scenarios as possible within a highly compressed time.

And, if I am going to panic, I’d rather run around and panic at sunset rather than sunrise.  Mostly because the sunrise has me a little groggy and out-of-sorts from putting on my socks inside out in the dark…

Daily Photo - San Francisco Before Sunrise

Before I started going to the main location, Tom and I pulled over to the side of the road in Sausalito to get this picture.  The water was too blue and the colors were too interesting to drive on by!  We wanted to be quick though… so we didn’t miss the sun peaking over the horizon at the main location.

A good shot of the city, what no full moon ? hehe!   Here in Perth W.A.you will fit our city into only 1/8th of your picture.

I remember standing in a spot very near here, if not here, when a cohort and I were in San Francisco for a training course.  The course was held in one of the less desirable parts of the city, and we had been through several unpleasant encounters during the week, including stepping in dog stuff on the sidewalk.  As we looked at a very similar view (sunset though, since we were going to dinner across the bridge from San Francisco) he said, “You know, that is a beautiful city.”
“Yeah, from a distance,” I replied.

Beautiful… I’m curious to see Tom’s POV. Does he work with HDR too?

Beautiful photo, Trey!!  I love the way you captured the sky and the ducks in the water!!  I hope you got to see the supermoon, it was beautiful!!!  I saw it coming up over the mountains last night before it disappeared behind the clouds, and then saw it when I got up this morning and watched it go down over the Bitterroot mountains!!  Have a wonderful Sunday :-)

Amazing city scape mister – I recall seing a similar one of Lower Manhattan when sailing back from Staten Island on the ferry – I got a decent shot of it but I would have loved to have gone at sunset to grab the scene.

Perth is my favourite Australian city – i’d imagine the view from the swan river of the Perth skyline could be similar to this at Sunset. I was there in 2003 when I had no clue how to even switch on a modern DSLR hehe!

Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on enjoying the sunrise/sunset because you’re so focused on getting the perfect shot?  I enjoy taking sunset photos but at the same time I feel like I often don’t enjoy them as much because I’m more worried about getting a good shot than enjoying the moment.

    Amazing capture of the city!

It’s nice to know that you have the sunset/sunrise panic. I posted a photo today that resulted in me ending up in an area I didn’t know very well, and having to find my way back to my bike in the dark.

     Hey Jeff,

I think about that a lot too, with all photography. I saw a whale recently while out fishing and my friends couldn’t understand why I didn’t grab my camera. It was the first whale I’d seen so wanted to enjoy it. I also figured I’d never manage to get a good photo as we trawled past. I try to take some time after shooting at sunrise to enjoy my surroundings. This caused a problem once as I became mesmerized by the fish under a dock and really struggled to drag myself to work!

    Thanks all! :)

hehe yes – I’ve had many of those – not-planned-ahead-rides-back-in-the-dark as well!

  • Trey Ratcliff

No – I appreciate the sunset while taking the photo because I am hyper-aware of it I think
