The Digital Aurora Borealis

Join me Tuesday, Live on TWIT Photo

Daily Photo – The Digital Aurora Borealis

There’s not many places where you can get a colorful sky in the middle of the night. China seems to be one of the best places to have these strange digital phenomenon.

This place is called “The Place.” It ranks right up there with some of the other awful names of Chinese locations. They should hire a poet or two so these places can sound more exotic. I’d be happier if it was called “Tomorrow Sky” or “The Sea of Matrix.”

    Trey,

How did you get this? Is there an overhead projector screen or what. I’m just starting with your HDR course but this is ludicrous. Holy Crap, Batman, the Chinese have a psychedelic hangout like no other…

I visited The Place this last summer. It’s in Beijing, in the Chaoyang district. It’s a mall that has a huge overhead screen that shows different displays at night. This one is a lot cooler than any of the other I saw. It is an amazing sight though.

    Thanks!

Dave – I did this with a 5-exposure HDR – the screen was flowing but did not change too much…

Clay – I get a lot of looks!

Culture – this is in Beijing at “The Place”

Susan – no worries, my team delights in deleting his comments. He’s a tool.

    Trey,
I have to admit that “The Place” is an awful name in English, but many (actually most) Chinese names that are poetic and exotic in Chinese does not translate well into English. There are many cultural connections in these names, and most of the times, these names contains hidden or double meanings that doesn’t exist in its English counterpart.

    I am a Beijinger!
That’s awesome! The place has never been shot so gorgeously as you did! I don’t like the English name of this place either. The Sea of Matrix sounds wonderful! You better give a recommendation to Beijing government! LOL.
