The Temple at Sunset

New 50mm Update

I’ve updated my Nikon 50mm review to now point to the new “G” model of the lens. It’s more expensive, but it’s also more flexible with various cameras as well as having better quality.

Burning Man is the only place I can go and: a) Not have any idea what I am going to see and b) just know it is going to be awesome.

So, that’s kind of a unique situation, I think. For example, if I go to London, England, I know I’m going to see the Tower Bridge and it’s going to be incredible. But how often do you go in completely blind to a place, and just know you’re going to be amazed?

This is the main temple that lies on the 12 o’clock axis from the burning man himself. Every year it is different. It’s always non-denominational, but it has hints of all the major religions… So, that way, the 1 billion+ Buddhists are happy, the 1 billion+ Hindus are happy, the 1 billion+ Muslims are happy, and the 500 mil+ Christians are happy, and so are the other 2 billion various belief-systems floating around out there. I don’t know how you can make a temple for everyone, but, well, here it is… and everyone seems to like it!

    Another terrific HDR artwork. It’s more than a photo – it’s a piece of art. However I don’t think any of the religions you mentioned would be happy with it. There are no Buddhas for the Buddhists; there are no crucifixes for Christians; and it is far to ornate for the Muslims. But it’s a beautiful structure.

    I was very interested to see your decision to leave the wide angle lens distortion in place. The inward curvature of the “wings” makes the temple more “all inclusive”.

    That’s yet another lesson from you, learned by me, intentional or not.

    I find it funny that BM is all about so-called gift economy, but the organizers have different rules..50k people at $300 a ticket makes $15 million. But you do get portaloos for that. Preying on the same idiots that Jim Jones did.

    Awesome photo. I don’t think I got one from this POV. It was so much to take in that I was a little overwhelmed at where to point my camera, but next year I’ll be ready!

    So you’re argument is the $300 ticket. You know that’s only about $40 a day, right? That is a small price to pay to be at the most awesome place on earth. I would easily pay twice as much. How can you compare it to Jonestown? Leaving BM I felt more alive than ever. Now, where’s that Kool-Aid?
