The Japanese Cemetery

Of a Feather

I didn’t really intend this, but I find today’s photo very similar to yesterday’s. I guess it is just a coincidence.

I do love Kyoto and the quaintness of Japanese design. Of course, cemeteries all over the world are different, and each one is kind of like you expect. I don’t really know what I mean by that, since you don’t know what you will see. But it is never surprising when you finally lay eyes on it. Of course, you don’t know what any of it means, or the traditions involved, but you can sort of intuit the inner meaning of it all. And that is kind of nice.

    I like the quaintness too – it does look very peaceful.

    There’s a cemetary just up the road from my place where the relatives of the deceased buried there are allowed to decorate the plots. Loads of people have done their late relatives resting places with lanterns, coloured lights, wind chimes, bird houses and drawings just as a few examples – it’s not traditional but it’s a nice difference compared to some of the other local cemetaries which are a bit of a mess to be honest.

    To me this row of graves kind of resembles a street with skyscrapers on either side or a scene from Lego land!

    Showing respect to those that we have lost is a strange concept. The what ifs, the if only…

    I guess what I am trying to say is try to appreciate and show your appreciation to those around you as you don’t know when either they or you will be taken from this earth.

    About the similarity with yesterdays photo, it is striking! But is it strange? I don’t think so. Don’t we tend to imitate nature in especially places like this? To reflect the peace and quiet of nature around us? Most of us like modern architecture, but where do we go to clear our heads and shed the busyness of everyday life? We retreat to nature: the forest, the park, the garden.

    Fantastic photo! The contrast on this image is superb. A friend of my recently went to Japan and he was saying how amazing their cemeteries are and from this I can see why. They are much more personal than UK ones. Keep up the good work
