The Black Rock

HDR Video Tutorial – Coming Down

Hey everybody… I’m only leaving the HDR Video Tutorial up for a few more days before I bring it down forever. It will never be available again… If you want to grab it, now’s your last chance!

It will replaced very soon with something even better… but just in case you wanted the existing one, I wanted to give you fair warning.

Daily Photo – The Black Rock

When I was in Big Sur spending a few days at the Post Ranch Inn, my wife and I ended up spending some time with Anton Lorimer.

Anton was down filming a new video for SmugMug, which I’ll share here when it’s finished. Since I get about 1 million photo views a week from SmugMug, they wanted to feature me in their new video. BTW, if you want to know more about it all, see my SmugMug Review, or try them out for free…if you sign up, STUCKINCUSTOMS code saves you 20%, btw…

You can see Anton’s existing SmugMug video on his site. He does really elegant work, nice editing, and puts together a tight little story. I had him film a little bit “extra” stuff with me, and I’ve encouraged him and SmugMug to put together an extended behind-the-scenes video. Let’s hope he does it!

One of the places I wanted to visit was this amazing beach not too far from the inn. I planned on getting there early so I would have time to set up. We got there a little too early, and the sun was too high in the sky. But we still took time to check out the scene. It was hellishly windy, but I did grab a this shot below before we retreated to a nearby cafe to get some hot chocolate before returning for the sunset. The sunset gave us some amazing light for a crazy ocean sunset, but I’ll save that for a future day…. Maybe when that new video comes out!

This is cool – i like the ‘aged’ look in this photo. I had a bash last week at making one of my photos from NYC in 2010 look vintage by using a few simple techniques in Photoshop. I’m sure there’s a better way but since this only took me 10 minutes and I haven’t really any idea how to introduce textures into my images I thought it was a goos starting point and a decent result. If you’re going to check this one out this is one of the few times i’ll encourage anyone to look at an image at 100% – you can see the textures i’ve added better that way – enjoy!

Really like the textured look. Since I just cleaned my CCD filter and lenses, it reminds me of what it might look like to take shots with puddles of water on the lens! Cool shot, Trey.

Hmmm, you’ve got us all thinking now Trey – I wonder what the sequel is going to be regarding the HDR video tutorial… personally, I’ve found it a huge help and thank you for sharing this with us all.
Nice textured shot – almost silhouette like what with the intense sun beating down.
I also highly rate SmugMug – such a great platform to use… I’ve not officially gone public as such, as I’m still in the throws of setting up my ‘Portfolio’ so to speak… all prior to rolling out with my freelance photography business (very soon!). With that said, I just love the easy interface with SmugMug and ability to show gorgeous hi-res images to the BIG wide world! :-)

Love the textures, very cool shot!

Great beach shot. I really like the texture you applied. One of these days I’ll have to give that a go.

Cool texture! I look forward to the sunset scene!

I really like this one, Trey. Nice textures and colors, and I like the low horizon.

I’m not sure if its the texture of the sky or the fact that I’m not use to you posting photos with only 2 colors. It is quite different than your norm, not sure how I really feel about it. Don’t get me wrong its a wonderful photo, it just doesn’t pop like most of your work.

What? –Trey, I’m a fully devoted follower of your work and totally respect your vision on HDR but for the last few days you have been posting less than Stuckincustoms standard photography, I understand genre breaks the common taste and different perspectives on photography but c’mon this is crap……

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com Trey Ratcliff

Sorry to disappoint you Bryan. I do 365 new photos a year – a tremendous undertaking, but perhaps you wil find something to your liking in the next few days. Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry you think this is crap.

I love this texture… what did you use (if you don’t mind my asking?). It’s a great one for filling boring blue sky!

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com Trey Ratcliff

    Kelley – I used 4 or 5 – and I don’t remember the names… I pull them in based on the look and I just can’t remember… sorry! :(

Thanks Trey. I love the look, and I’m sure I can play until I find something that works for me. It’s always fun to get an idea and then try to do something similar that makes my heart sing!

Oddly enough, I mentioned today that some photographers seem to not have enough time to post quality photos anymore. I said that and I wanted to mention that I do not include you in that statement.

I think this photo is interesting and noted that on flickr soon after it was posted. It’s actually quite amazing how you post such amazing quality images while you’re also doing so much more than other people. If you posted a picture of part of a wall and baseboard and it was underexposed, we might have something to talk about. But you don’t do that.

There are a number of other photographers that have websites or photoblogs and their quality is dropping off or they are simply addicted to website traffic and will slap anything up hoping for RSS feed people to come.

I don’t go over to Bryans Website and see Trey ripping on Bryan. Which could easily be done if there was a point to being like that. I also understand Bryan bringing up something that may have been an issue to him. Perhaps Bryan could have asked more about the image, processing, and reasons for posting this image today.

I can at least tell there was intent and thought behind this image. I can’t say that for things some other people are posting today.
