The Frozen Granite

Lenses I want for Christmas

I have two lenses on my Christmas list this year. They are the Nikon 300mm 2.8 and the 85mm 1.4. Both look like a lot of fun! If anyone has an older one they are selling, let me know. What’s on your list?

I have another discussion thread on this on the FB fan page.

Daily Photo – The Frozen Granite

Getting to this spot in Glacier National Park wasn’t easy. It was even tougher trying to get Ethan and Tina into the exact spot too. Even though this area had all this cool granite around it, there was a bit of a swamp there that we had to traverse first. And, just around the corner was a nice sandy beach!

Nice, I really like the cyans and the blues in the water here…

On my Christmas wish list is the Canon 5D Mark II (I currently shoot with the Canon 5D) as well as the Canon 85mm f/1.2L (though I would also like the Canon 50mm f/1.2L)…

What would you do with the Nikon 300 f/2.8? I don’t see how you could shoot many landscapes (and HDRs) with it… Maybe for sports photography?

The composition is great, but – sorry for being picky today – the water line is not straight – so it looks like the water falls off to the left. I know because I often have faulty lines in my photographs too and need to really pay attention to it. I am reading this great book “Within the Frame” – The Journey of Photographic Vision by David duChemin. He gives a lot of great impact and advice – check this book out, it’s really worth it.
As for my wish list if Santa Claus reads this: it would be a Nikon D700 and the SB900. Some more lenses would be great, I would go for a 20 mm and also the 85 mm 1.4.

Is it sad that when I ask myself that question, I can’t find an answer. My next “lens” is going to be another tripod.

85 f-1.4 is a great landscape and panorama lens … in my opinion. Also works very well for “out the window” shots on the fly. Just set shutter priority at 1/250 or better and get shots where you can’t even think about stopping. But do it while someone eles is driving. :-) :-) And, of course, it is a great portrait lens. Yes, panoramas and spherical VR panoramas are lost on a narrow blog screen, but they do work nicely with viewers. HDR panoramas and VR-HDR sphericals are quite entertaining. I like the 16mm fisheye for VRs with eight shots around the compass tilted down 15 degrees and one straight up and maybe one straight down. No Christmas lenses for me but it would be nice to have a carbon tripod.

I’d like a 17-35mm f/2.8 please. I’m going to buy a D700, and I need a wide (ultra ?) angle zoom. You can’t place filters on the 14-24mm, so the 17-35 seems perfect for me. But that’s not a cheap one :(

EF 16-35 f/2.8 L or EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS are on my wish list. EF-S 10-22mm would be nice as well, probably about as close as I’ll get to the 14-24′s angle of view on a Canon crop frame body.

Oh and a book called “A World in HDR” would be nice … not sure who its by though ;)

Thanks for another great shot Trey

    A 50mm f/1.8G and a 17-35mm f/2.8 would be nice, though price in France are quite expensive…

    Superb wide angle shot!

Currently my wish list is empty. I’m very happy now with my Nikkor 10-24mm and 35mm f/1.8 for my Nikon D300.

I love this photo, Trey!!!! And I didn’t put it under the microscope either, lol. The water looks natural to me, but who am I? My wish list for Christmas is a pair of purple paws slippers I ordered from the Dog Rescue website that I click on everyday.. They are already in my hubby’s room as I told him that was all I wanted for Christmas. At my age, I don’t need much of anything. And we have a nice Panasonic Lumix digital camera that works for us. Anyway, thanks for sharing another part of our beautiful state!!!! Hope you all had a good turkey day!!

I love this shot Trey! That water and the granite is gorgeous – never have seen granite like that before!

Thanks everyone! Good lens ideas… I always like hearing what people want next!

Birgit – you were absolutely right – I fixed it!! I should have you in my studio checking things out first! :)

Wants? I’m now up into the n+5 thousand dollar lens brackets. These lenses are like pokemon. After just shooting with the nikon 200-400 4 and the 400 2.8, I’m all verklempt about “do I get the D3s, or the 200-400 or the 400 or, or, or??” Using the 2.0 tele on the 70-200 is a little ghetto but the challenge is to get the shot to me instead of getting me to the shot. The 400 2.8 is a little slow to focus with the 2.0 tele but results are pretty crisp even for using the tele. What I desire is a sharpness akin to that of the 105 DC in a much longer lens. The 105 DC produces effortless sharpness when set up right and I’ve got all the other non tele/non macro high end Nikon lenses. Happy Thanksgiving from Dallas.

I want the D700, but by the time I have the money saved it will be the D800 or D900. Anyway I am perfectly happy with my D300.

    Super shot!

I already expressed my “want” on FB, but somehow I forgot to mention my “need”: a sturdy tripod (and head), preferably of the carbon type. Maybe, some time…

    I’d just love a Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 AF-S! I’m scouting high and low for a good deal.

Love the photo – a little less processed-looking than a lot of your photos.

As for lenses, I don’t have any, so I would love to get my little hands on a couple. Nothing in particular comes to mind, but things I’d like to try: lens-baby, fisheye, wide-angle, macro.

Thanks very much for the feedback…

It is very interesting to read about the lenses you want! :)

Hey Trey, I immedeately noticed that you have fixed it when checking the site again today! It looks so much better now! I am also always thankful when other photogs point out mistakes I have made.

Haha! the christmas wish list in november? nice ideas though. I think I’m in the market for a new speedlight and possibly a fish-eye depending on which speedlight I guess. Interesting how you don’t see many camera ads around Christmas, not that you see many anyway…

Nice shot, the colour and tone in the water is really nice, masked riples or the HDR ones? I must admit I’m a fan of the single RAW HDR ripple :P
