Electric LA at Night

Last Chance for 2011

The Black Friday special was such a success that I decided to extend it for the rest of the year!

Daily Photo – Electric LA at Night

I took this a few nights ago in Los Angeles. I’ve always wanted to get a good shot of the downtown action, and Stuck On Earth helped me get it.

Luckily, I saw a few hints of this kind of a shot from other photographers that had geotagged shots in the area. I went out there with Tom Anderson and we spent a few hours exploring the area. We got countless great shots and this was the first one I processed.

Awesome photo – wow – love this! Now I want to go to LA!

  • Unreal Trey, Car lights coming and going – making streaks in the night. Looks like you were standing on a freeway bridge with lots of traffic going by. Seems kind of dangerous to me. Must have been a very long exposure, because every time I’ve driven in LA the traffic moved very slowly. Once it took be a half hour to go three miles.
Susan – you don’t want to go to LA. Come down here to San Diego. Much more scenic, and a lot less traffic.

  • Tom

    Wow! instant favourite.

  • Beautiful colors!

  • Awesome photo – we’re going back to LA and down to San Diego in 2012, can’t wait!

  • Yep. This is the one. Such pure awesomeness.

  • Gail Moshier

I agree with all the above, awesome shot, Trey. I, too, love the colors and the cars streaking along. Thanks for sharing, happy Christmas Eve. 🙂

I did a solo road trip from Chicago to LA a couple years back – had always wanted to see California. LOVED IT, and this photo makes me want to go back and try out the HDR skills I’ve learned since that trip!

  • Thank you!

  • Stunning shot, such a clever composition.

  • What a lot of electricity! This is much prettier than the real thing, Trey. The colors of the night are amazing as you’ve captured them.

Beautiful shot love to do this shot on my next trip to LA. Is this a safe place to venture out

Another successful city shot – great work! Hope Santa is god to you all tonight – Merry Christmas!

  • Trey, wonderfully inspiring shot. Real interested in how your find the geotagged photos that help your determine possible locations? Thomas Hawk talked a little about this during his recent google talk and I am interested in how to go about doing this?

  • Patrick Ahles

    Truly wonderful! Great processing, Trey!

  • Brad

Amazing shot; incredible to think that nobody has thought of doing long exposures with vehicle lights before now – seems so obvious in retrospect.

  • It’s certainly not the LA I remember visiting in the mid to late 1950’s. Back then the tallest building was the city hall. I’m still amazed by the transformation of the Downtown area. Wonderful shot.

  • Todd Hurlbut

I’d love to see your series of photos from LA. Since I work in downtown LA, I’d love to see your take and shots on the place. This is great photo and can’t wait to upgrade my camera to start taking these wonderful shots.

  • Jeff Peterson

    Wonderful photo Trey!

  • Excellent composition, Trey! Love how you not only shot the 110 Freeway, but also got the street to the left. I get to LA a couple times a year and still have a shot list for the downtown area. There are some cool night shots, such as the Staples Center when there’s event going on, and the train at Angel’s Flight.

  • Trey, I’ve learned a lot from you! I’m a semi-pro photog, and when I’m not shooting for a client, I mostly fiddle with HDR and try to get your kind of results.

This LA shot is one of my favorites of yours. I really like the realistic style of HDR that brings out all the highs and lows into one image. The hyper-realistic style isn’t really my cup of tea, but you obviously do an amazing job on those as well.

Thanks for sharing your passion with us!
