Next up in my camera reminiscing, the totally awesome D800. This is probably just about where DSLRs hit their peak in my opinion and just before the Sony would shake things up. Also, this is a rare shot of Cleveland for me. I think I’ve only ever published 2! I should go back and grab some more sometime. (This one was taken on a D800 i had borrowed to try, before buying.)
Don’t think I’ve shared this image before… in fact I think photos from Cleveland may be one of my rarest categories. So, either way, it’s worth a (re-)share… this is the stunning Severance Hall.

Hanging from a Lamppost
Lester (see below) sent me this photo of me hanging up high on the campus of Kent State. I showed it to my wife, and she started to laugh. I didn’t know how to take that! hehe…. Uploaded with Skitch!
Daily Photo – Construction in Cleveland
I went out with my host during the Kent State speech, Lester Lefton, and this is the first place he brought me! I don’t think other guests get to do things like this… you know… go to dangerous construction sites and stuff… But, if you could not tell, it turns out to be an awesome place for a little photography adventure! 🙂
This was actually the FIRST photo I ever took with a D800, and it was using Lester’s camera. I put in my memory card, which felt a little weird. But then when I looked through the viewfinder and snapped away, it felt like my own! Anyway, we had a great time together.
But Colby and Bill and Jarvie have the D800 — they show it off in the hangout video below!
So, I wrote this controversial article at https://stuckincustoms.com/2012/01/04/dslrs-are-a-dying-breed-3rd-gen-cameras-are-the-future/ about DSLRs being a dying breed… something that I still believe… In the article I said that DSLRs are on their way out and Mirrorless cameras will take over in the next few years. I didn’t see myself spending more money on DSLR equipment, but that is before the D800 came out, which is half the price and better for my situation than the D3X! So…. this is my loophole… hehe… and well… you can see more in the video.
I shared this photo in the beginning of my talk. I shot it earlier in the morning with the Nikon D800 (that I borrowed from Lester) when I went to visit the amazing Severance Hall.
I’m going to start up my Nikon D800 Review page and fill it up over the next few weeks with my thoughts and samples from the camera. I won’t really get the thing “done” for a while, but at least you’ll get some ideas of my thoughts and feedback on the camera.
So, Severance Hall was a beautiful venue. It’s the home of the Cleveland Orchestra, and it’s one of the most beautiful conference halls in the world. If you visit Cleveland, this is on the must-see list! I got a lot more shots, and I can talk more about this amazing place in the future… for now… it’s been a long day and I’m awfully tired… enjoy. 🙂
