Dinner In Venice

Italian Food in Italy

Of course they don’t call it Italian food there. They just call it food. But one thing I have definitely noticed throughout Italy is that they don’t have a huge desire for foreign food. It’s hard to find Mexican/Japanese/etc sort of food… they just really like Italian food, I guess. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t?

Daily Photo – Dinner In Venice

It's hard to pass by these restaurants and NOT picture yourself sitting outside to have dinner by the canal. That's kind of what it's all about here, eh? Whenever I walk by a cafe or restaurant and see people sitting outside, eating, and enjoying themselves, I am thinking, hey, that looks pretty awesome, that should be future me, or maybe even me right now.

Midnight in Venice

Speaking of Venice

Do you have the Complete HDR Tutorial that we filmed in Venice? If not, here is a preview of it…

Daily Photo – Midnight in Venice

When you're in a photo-taking mode all day, it's hard to put down the camera at night. Since every day in Venice was filled with photography, it always bled into the night as well. And since it was the middle of Carnivale, then people kept looking awesome all day long. No matter how tired I got, I could not walk by someone like this and NOT take a photo.

Carnivale in Venice

Venice from Above

Here’s a video I made while in Venice; I hope you enjoy!

Daily Photo – Carnivale in Venice

Speaking of photo adventures (yesterday's post), here's one we did in Venice! It was my very first Carnivale, and I didn't expect to get so many photos of people in costume. I didn't know if you had to pay money to these people or what. It turns out you don't! They just will sit there and pose literally all day long. They love it! It's like what they were born to do… and so it's great practice for a photographer to get out there and work on portrait photography.

A moody Venice in the fog at night

Music from Burning Man

A few weeks after Buring Man, the playlists start to appear on Soundcloud. Here’s a set from the Space Party our camp hosted one night

Daily Photo – A moody Venice in the fog at night

If you go to Venice, I recommend you pay a bit extra and just rent a water taxi to drive you around in the late afternoon and sunset as much as possible. Just mow up and down that central canal and take little side-canals whenever you like. The water taxi is great because while the driver is whisking you around, you can then shoot in any direction.. forwards, backwards… whatever you want. And there is so much to see that you'll be busy the entire time!

Posing in Venice

More from Venice

You website veterans already know this very well, but you can click on the Venice category above to see even more photos from Venice. Another way to do it is to click through today’s photo until you get to Smugmug then do a search there for Venice.

Daily Photo – Posing in Venice

Even though I went out on at least five occasions and just dedicated myself to taking these sorts of photos, I feel like I should have gone out twice as many times! It was really my first time experimenting with the 90mm Hasselblad lens, and it seems ideally suited just for this kind of shot.

The Calatrava Bridge in Venice

Thoughts on pathways in photos from Berlin

After the madness of Amsterdam, we drove overnight to Berlin for the 7th photo walk on the tour. Here the theme was pathways and how they, as well as other elements, can enhance your photography.

Daily Photo – The Calatrava Bridge in Venice

I don't do a lot of these abstract scenes, but I do quite like the way this one turned out… I didn't know for sure if these long shutter techniques would work well. There's a lot of experimentation if you want to try something like this yourself. Of course, a tripod is mandatory, but then just switch into manual and try different shutter speeds and adjusting the aperture until you get the lighting you like. This one was 3.2 seconds.

Daily Photo – Fun in Venice!

During our famous costume party in Venice, this was my friend Magnus tearing up the dance floor! He was there with our really fun workshop, and this was one of the final events. Magnus was really funny because he has this thick accent… and he was having back troubles the morning before this masquerade ball. He came limping up to me, hobbled over like an old man, holding a cup of coffee, and in a very serious voice, he mutters, “Trey, this is not a party body.”

Late Night, Streets of Venice

My Photography Tips from London! – London Highlights

While we’ve been on the road our master videographer Olya has been filming non-stop and has put together some highlight videos for each city. In the latest highlight reel of London, Trey dishes out some tips for colour (not color) in photography. Have a watch below and see what you think! 🙂

Daily Photo – Late Night, Streets of Venice

A few weeks ago, I posted a similar photo from the streets of San Juan. This is one of those “lay-up” shots that I often go for. I find a fairly symmetrical pedestrian walkway (usually better than roads), then set up with a tripod for a long exposure. It's just satisfying for some reason!

Hasselblad Greatness

For Passport Members

As a reminder for Passport members, please don’t forget to visit your special Passport page to see all the goodies. One of them is the unboxing of the New Hasselblad! Also, you’ll see, in the new HDR Video Tutorial (which you can buy separately or get for free as a Passport member), more from this amazing church below where I took this photo.

Daily Photo – Hasselblad Greatness

This was taken with my first Hasselblad, and it's one of the photos that made me fall in love with it. I do love my Sony too, but this one a bit more. This was shot at an extremely high F-Stop and you can just sort of see the sharpness in it, eh? This was shot in San Rocco in Venice.

Into the Night

Tip: Over-Touristy Places

Venice is definitely over-filled with tourists, but the hottest tip I have is to rest during the day and stay out most of the night, when there are about zero tourists around. For one thing, cruises just dump tons of people in the city during the day, but all of them go back to the boat after sunset, leaving the city just for you. Also, people tend to walk around a LOT during the day, which totally wears them out… so, be like a cat and nap/rest all day, then at night, go out on the prowl!

Daily Photo – Into the Night

Have you noticed I'm adding new Venice photos every other day here for the past week? Yes! I had a huge backlog of these things and decided to crank 'em out. And, even though I've posted a lot of them, I hope you are not getting tired of them earlier!
