Dusseldorf – Stuck in Customs

Dusseldorf Architecture

Daily Photo – Dusseldorf Architecture

I love these creative buildings where architects push things into all sorts of weird shapes that don’t seem like they should stand.

Walking Through Dusseldorf at Night

From the Fine Art Video

You may recognize this canal from the “Making of” my prints video at www.TreyRatcliff.com.

Daily Photo – Walking Through Dusseldorf at Night

One night in Dusseldorf after a long day working on the fine art project, I decided to grab my camera and tripod and walk around the city alone. It’s a great place for photography, just like most cities in Germany. This is one of the long canals near my hotel.

Mirrorball!

Today if you’re a Passport member you’ll get the source files for today’s photo as well as my latest ebook!

PASSPORT Goodies – Grab em now!

I usually don’t provide my source files, but I do think I’ll do that more and more. Here are the source files that you can use to recreate my photo today and if you head to that link you’ll also find the download link for my latest eBook which we’ve just added to Passport. (You’ll need to be logged in.) If you create something cool with the files (maybe even try to get it as close to identical as you can… as well as your own interpretation), send it over to stu at stuckincustoms dot com and he’ll pass them on to me to see. 🙂

Have fun/Enjoy!

Daily Photo – Mirrorball!

I think this is actually a tiny restaurant. It looks a lot bigger than it actually is because how close up I got the camera. I also processed the heck out of it to make it pop!

Part two of the Latest Passport Sunday Series

Okay now we’re getting into the good stuff if you’re a Passport Member. Now, you’ll see how I get this unusual but rather cool look! Here’s one of the photos I reference in today’s video.

What are the 7 Reasons why I moved to New Zealand?
And here is the video…

The Technique, Part 2

I hope you enjoy this fun little trick. It can be a little confusing until you try it a few times, and I recommend you go give it a whirl on some of your favorite landscape and architecture photos! Enjoy!

Daily Photo – The Dusseldorf Building + Filter

If you saw last Sunday’s photo then you’ll recognize today’s photo sans the filter. I must say that this technique does not work on every photo, but I do really like the feel it gives to architecture. It’s definitely not for purists, but I think it gives it quite an interesting film look.

Passport Sunday Time!

Today for Passport Members you’ll get part 1 of 3 that show some cool processing tricks. If you’re not a member now, today is a good time to join up! You’ll get over 200 video tutorials plus a ton of other things.

Today is the first step on the way to showing how I get this sort of look that I got on my recent road trip to the north island.

What are the 7 Reasons why I moved to New Zealand?
And now on with the show…

HDR Processing before the Special Filter

On some of my photos, I use a variety of drastically different techniques. First, I’m going to push it hard in the HDR realm (as shown below), and then in next week’s video, you’ll see how I add a special custom filter that will reduce the contrast and give it a rather unique look!

Daily Photo – Extreme Processing of a cool building in Dusseldorf

While on a random wander through the modern area of Dusseldorf, I came across this amazing building… I took shots from a few different angles, but this was my favorite. You can unlock the part below if you want to see the processing video!

Lee in a Museum

Daily Photo – Lee in a Museum

I was with my friend Lee in some museum in Dusseldorf. I can’t quite remember the name of it, but a lot of it was interactive. Well, interactive is maybe too strong of a word. And maybe so is art. Anyway, this was apparently some kind of display where you can sit down in the chair. I thought it looked very Lee-like, so I asked him to sit down for a quick photo.

Gehry Architecture

How do I make Prints for collectors?

Here’s a video from our Fine Art Prints page at www.TreyRatcliff.com. It shows how we fabricate the prints here in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Daily Photo – Gehry Architecture

This is amazing Dusseldorf, where I’ve been twice to inspect the prints above. I try to go out at night a little and explore this new section of the city. There are three Gehry buildings here, and this one is a favorite. I’ll share a photo of this mirrored thing in the middle of the day too; as you can imagine, it looks quite different.

Beautiful Clouds in Dusseldorf

The Making-Of

The creation of my large format photographs in Dusseldorf…

Daily Photo – Beautiful Clouds in Dusseldorf

This is my favorite area to shoot while in this really cool German town. This is kind of the new media center… lots of crazy architecture and strange stuff happening! Check out those crazy frog-people on the right… Oh, Germany!

Gehry Building in Dusseldorf

New Article in the Daily Telegraph

Here’s an article that came out yesterday. It talks a bit about me, the blog, and everything! It features a few different “Online Influencers.”

Correcting Alignments in Architecture

I tried doing the automatic adjustments in Photoshop to send all the lines back to vertical. The look was okay, but it was a bit boring on this image, so I kept it with the wacky verts… which I generally like better anyway, but especially for crazy architecture like this!

Daily Photo – Gehry Building in Dusseldorf

How cool is this building? Gehry actually has three buildings here in this “Media Center” area of Dusseldorf that are grouped together. All the buildings are awesome, but this one definitely stands out. The three are very similar in design, but this is the one with the crazy mirrored outside. The “look” and feel of it change dramatically throughout the day and night, but around this time, I felt like it was an entrance to the Matrix!

Exploring Dusseldorf

Freezing Germany

I’m just came back to Dusseldorf for a second time this year. The first time it was SO COLD and I decided to buy a good coat. I’ve never actually had a good, proper winter coat, but now I do. It’s super amazing and keeps me crazy-toasty. It’s got a big German-furry hood, tons of pockets, and, well, I’ve just never liked a coat so much!

Daily Photo – Exploring Dusseldorf

I am really getting to know Dusseldorf! What a cool city. There is this one really quirky area called the Mediahoffen that is full of some crazy-cool architecture. I spent quite a while there goofing around and taking photos. This is just one of about 50 cool places I found around there…
