Tuefelsberg, the Devil’s Mountain, the cold-war listening station

More and More Video

I took today’s photo with a drone. I also got a lot of video… I’m just kind of collecting cool video from all over the place. At some point, I’ll find time to make a new compilation video of some of these amazing places. Anyway, lock this place into your memory, as you may see it again in a future video! ๐Ÿ™‚

How cool is this abandoned place? I had never heard of it until our most recent trip to Berlin. There's a hill here that rises up about 80 meters. There's also an abandoned Nazi military-technical college. I bet that was gonna be quite the party school. Anyway, on the very top is this listening station. Now it's been taken over by graffiti artists and there's all kinds of crazy stuff happening inside. It's right out of Fallout. There are creepy people milling about, strange shut-ins, etc – the whole thing is wonderfully post-apocalyptic. You can buy a ticket to get in, but they make you leave (quite forcefully) after sunset.

Strange Bokeh in the Park

New Plotagraph Review

Here’s a new Plotagraph Review on the site. I also made two new how-to videos. Here’s one of them for you:

Unusual Bokeh

Every now and then, the Sony throws off this strange effect in the background. I’m not sure how I did it, but I sure like it. I used the 35mm Leica lens here, and it seems to have some sort of spiral effect. Or maybe it’s just the orientation of the crowd. I’m not sure, but I think it is interesting.

Daily Photo – Strange Bokeh in the Park

While in Berlin, I went to this weekly festival in a park there. It was kind of like a mini-Burning Man. You know these types of mini-festivals. They seem to be getting more and more popular. And they're always great for photos. This was taken in a big karaoke area where people would organically get on the stage and sing, dance, and perform. You can see the audience in the back, just as this performer was walking off the stage.

An old public bathroom to buy burgers

Late May in Berlin for Photo Walk

Make sure to check out our our 80 Stays Tour Website for all the info on our FREE Photo Walk in Berlin on the 20th May!

Daily Photo – An old public bathroom to buy burgers.

Welcome to one of the most famous burger places in Berlin! We asked our concierge at the Ritz-Carlton where to go get a cool meal. He said, well, there is a place under the railroad tracks that used to be a public restroom and has been converted to a place to get great burgers. Say no more! Curtis and I went straight there! ๐Ÿ™‚

Walking about the Sorbonne in the evening

The View from the Ritz-Carlton Berlin Penthouse Apartment

Berlin Art Show

I gave a little talk during the event and it was recorded on Facebook live. Here it is below – enjoy!

Daily Photo – The View from the Ritz-Carlton Berlin Penthouse Apartment

I was lucky enough to stay here for several nights during my art show in Berlin. We had a fun party up here after the art show as well… there's this one secret bookcase that slides back into the wall. That's always a big hit! I feel bad that I wasn't really there long enough to enjoy it… it was such a beautiful spot, but I was so busy running this way and that, I didn't have a lot of “peaceful relaxation” time… but maybe when I go back!

Fragrances in Berlin

Making a Special Drink

Here’s a live broadcast where I show more of the interior of this place and the unique way in which they make drinks.

Daily Photo – Fragrances in Berlin

If you look close, you can see a bit of ghosting from the bartender here in Fragrances (the bar inside the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin). When I was shooting, people were asking if they could get out of my way. I usually tell them no, because I like a bit of ghosting and some mystery in there. It's also funny when I walk into a place with a tripod that they think there is something QUITE SERIOUS going on. It's actually just the opposite… complete silliness and fun!

Heading to the Burgermeister in Berlin

A little embedded action

Here’s a Vimeo of one of the sets at the Mayan Warrior I mentioned yesterday!

DJ Three – Mayan Warrior – Thursday Night – Burning Man – 2016 from Mayan Warrior on Vimeo.

Daily Photo – Heading to the Burgermeister in Berlin

We asked our concierge for a unique restaurant in Berlin, and they recommended we visit this burger place that used to be a public toilet under the train tracks. Sign us up! And that's where we headed, to the famous Burgermeister. It was a TASTY Burger for sure… while waiting on said burger in said former public toilet, I went across the street to take this photo… you can see the train tracks up above to the right.

The Berlin Wall

Mini Wall

I’m not sure what that small wall there on the left is. Do any of you? My guess is that is was from another wall in another country that was partially brought here after it also fell. But that’s just a theory.

Daily Photo – The Berlin Wall

This was my fourth trip to Germany, but my first one to Berlin. What an amazing city! I could really see myself living there for a while. It reminded me a lot of New York City, except even more bohemian and artsy. Within 12 hours of getting there, I made the pilgrimage here to the Berlin Wall. This is a continuous stretch of about 1.5km that is still standing, now fully decorated by artists.

Fragrances in the Ritz-Carlton, Berlin

Choosing a drink

Here’s a quick video I did where I talked to the German Cumberbatch about this rather unique bar!

Daily Photo – Fragrances in the Ritz-Carlton, Berlin

Which one to choose? I figured I couldn't go wrong. I really wanted that one drink that was served inside the small Swedish house that they burn down upon arrival. But I felt like it would be a huge waste and spectacle. I was alone there, reading my Kindle… and it seemed like a very strange, lonely, and elitist thing to be reading a book on anthropology while watching my drink-house burn down.

Oberbaumbrucke bridge across the Spree river in Berlin

Behind the Scenes

Here’s our Facebook Live video that shows us arriving at the Berlin wall (after crossing this bridge) and quite excited. There’s a bit of Berlin Wall trivia in here too!

Daily Photo – Oberbaumbrucke bridge across the Spree river in Berlin

Upon arrival, Curtis and I jumped in an amazing car (the Audi S8 โ€” thanks Audi!) and we drove immediately over to the Berlin Wall. I've always wanted to visit this place, being an armchair history buff. It didn't disappoint at all, and we took photos here all through the sunset. There's a 1.5 KM stretch of the wall that still stands and has been decorated by hundreds of artists. After that, we crossed the street and want about half a click down the river Spree to see this scene of the Oberbaumbrucke bridge as the sun was dipping below the horizon.
