More from the Opera

New Zealand Workshop!

It’s not long now until our New Zealand Workshop! If you can’t make it this year, that page has a new link to next year’s event!

Daily Photo – More from the Opera

For all you awesome daily visitors, this is from the same opera in Chengdu that was mentioned yesterday. We were allowed into the dressing room to take photos as the stage actors did their make-up for the event. I didn’t actually stay for the entire opera because I’ve already been to four Chinese operas. This sounds very jaded, but they are all the same as far as I can tell. There are a few very interesting Chinese musical instruments that I have never heard played live, but, otherwise, the singing and tenor of speech becomes a bit grating (at least, to me).

Young Girl in Chengdu

Ping Pong

I used to play a lot of ping pong. I was never very good… but I had a lot of fun with it. I’d like to think this is the Chinese version of me. One important note, however: I am not nearly this skilled.

Daily Photo – Young Girl in Chengdu

This is a five-year-old girl who arrived early at a Chinese opera so she could be dolled up for the event. I was here for about 15 minutes taking photos of her while I had an extremely broken chat with her mom and dad. After a bit of work, I got the mom’s WeChat and sent her the photos. WeChat is kind of like the Facebook Messenger of China. Anyway, I often wonder why parents subject their kids to this sort of thing… it’s clearly 100% for the amusement of the parents. Well, 99%, as the other 1% was me. Nothing wrong with it, I suppose… 5-year-old kids have very little idea what the hell is going on, anyway. As long as everyone was happy and kind around them all the time, it’s all okay.

Tina Guo on Cello

iPhone People

All of you people that still use iPhones – why is that? This is not a paid post by Google or anything… I just wonder. By most objective measurements, Android phones are better.

Daily Photo – Tina Guo on Cello

This gal is totally insane on stage (in a good way). She acts like some psycho killer that will lacerate anyone within her wingspan as she channels the deep anger of past relationships. I don’t even know if that is true, but I read that into her performance. Offstage, she is one of the sweetest and nicest people in the world. I find this dichotomy interesting since I am a total introvert and am as awkward on stage as off.

Between Operas

Trey’s Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

Have you ever tried Bulletproof Coffee? I have it almost every day and it provides a very good energy balance through the first chunk of the day. There is a recipe on the official site, but I will reduce the recipe to something more simple. That site seems to be trying to upsell some products. The recipe actually works, but you don’t have to follow their links. Here’s my recipe, link-free:

1) 1 full cup of coffee (made from coffee beans or instant)
2) 1-2 tablespoons of MCT oil (available from any health food or bodybuilding shop)
3) 1-2 tablespoons of Unsalted butter

I know it sounds strange to mix butter and oil into your coffee, but it actually helps to slowly deliver the caffeine to your body in the most efficient manner.

Daily Photo – Between Operas

I was in Chengdu near a hot pot place that was entertaining the diners with a little opera variety show. Between shows, the girls would go sit outside and eat snacks, still with all their makeup on. I just kinda sat there and watched them for a while, drinking the whole thing in.

Jamming Out in Tokyo

The Creation of Life Raft for a Death Trip

Hey, how about another mesmerizing making-of video from one of my favorite artists, Android Jones. I find his process to be quite inspirational.

Daily Photo – Jamming Out in Tokyo

Shibuya Crossing in the middle of Tokyo is a paradise for photographers. If you enjoy taking photos of people, this place will provide the maximum bandwidth for you. One time when I was there, I saw a live band playing on one of the corners. They were all dressed in gas masks and I have no idea what they were singing about (it was in Japanese). But, they looked pretty awesome, and I grabbed this shot whilst listening to their inscrutable music.

Social Media Influencers on a Mountain

Becoming an Artist, Episode 2!

Welcome to another Wednesday here on the blog, which means another episode of Becoming an Artist, Season 1! We shot a bunch of these while in Africa and I’m happy to share them now here on the blog with you.

Here is episode 2!

Daily Photo – Social Media Influencers on a Mountain

I don’t know how I got caught up in this scene. It was my first time hanging out with supposed “Influencers.” Most of the time, I’m by myself, taking photos and wandering around for an interesting photo. These Influencers seemed obsessed with taking photos of one another, illustrating how they are experiencing nature. Many Influencers are very weird.

A Hot Day in Papua New Guinea

Spotify Playlist Fun

Here is a new playlist of mine on Spotify for you to enjoy. It’s made up of songs that I listen to on a lazy, relaxing afternoon at Burning Man.

Daily Photo – A Hot Day in Papua New Guinea

I only spent a week in this country, but I’m just going to go ahead and assume it’s always blazing hot. While I was there I met this tribesman and we had a hard time having a discussion. Initially, I told him I thought he looked awesome and I liked all the decor. He sort of nodded as if he understood what I was saying. And then I said he looked pretty fit and asked him if he worked out…He was a bit more confused by this question.

Bel in the Middle

The New Critique Show!

Well, here’s yet another experiment in fun! I have a goofy and funny neighbor here in New Zealand who is a photographer. We decided to try out a new concept for a critique show. Here’s episode 1! Tell us what ya think! 🙂

Daily Photo – Bel in the Middle

Man, these guys loved Bel. They really loved her hair. The couldn’t stop touching it and she was just giggling in her silly way. All in all, we spent about half a day in this little village. You’ll see the whole thing in an upcoming episode that we are premiering on YouTube from Africa.
