Spending the Night on the North Island

The North Island of New Zealand

I need to spend more time in the North! I feel so New-Zealand-Lame! I spend SO much time in the South Island, exploring all the mountains and everything… so I am feeling like I am a little lost up there, you know? I gotta get my act together!

Daily Photo – Spending the Night on the North Island

I stayed for the night with my friend Stu Robertson at his amazing secret hidaway. It was awesome. We shot of fireworks and made all kinds of really bad decisions… at one point in the night, things were so lovely that I stopped for a moment to take this photo.

    beautiful there! Glad you had fun! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Is that Wellington in the background? I feel the same about the South Island. I’ve been all over the North but nowhere in the South! Waiting til the summer so that the weather is nicer!

    No that’s actually Auckland… I’m a bit far away from it…

    I’d recommend:

    * Waikaremoana (stay at the motorcamp). Esp in summer. Walk up to Waikareiti and hire a row boat (and go for a swim). You’re going to need a few days (or a week) up there. My favourite place on the planet.

    * Auckland west coast – Piha, Murawai, Karekare. Or go to Watipu and walk up the beach (from 0 to 5 hours, depending on how far you want to go). Waitakare Ranges (same area) are also awesome.

    * The sand dunes – and generally all of – the top top top of the island are awseome. Get a 4WD and drive down 90 mile beach (check the tide and google it first)

    * Central platau is always good, but kind of like parts of the south island.

    * Coromandel. All of it.

    * Great Barrier Island. Bit of a hike to get there, but totally worth it. 2nd favourite place in the country.

    * Waiheke Island. But I’m biased, as I live there.

    Have you been up to Takaka yet? Or to Karamea (north of Westport)?

    Amazing @Nicwise โ€” great suggestions!

    No problem @treyratcliff:disqus . I have the advantage of parents who dragged me around the country a LOT when I was a kid (we had a campervan) – I think I’ve done all but 2 of the “Great Walks”, been to most of the national parks (they’ve added a few since I left home 20 years ago), and generally, I prefer to be away from crowds.
