Driving Along Lake Hawea

More New Zealand in Stuck On Earth

I know we have a good group of people coming to New Zealand in February for a fun event together (see Photography Workshops) , but even if you are unable to make it, remember to check Stuck On Earth for a great load of photo locations. I put together a list of photo highlights in the South Island there for you.

Here is the exact map point where I took this photo, btw… you can zoom out and see how there is just not much around!

Daily Photo – Driving Along the Lakes of New Zealand

When I drive along the countless electric-blue lakes of New Zealand, I keep thinking, “This reminds me of Switzerland!” But this is actually a strange thing to think, because I’ve only spent a short amount of time in Switzerland. Really, you can make the case that New Zealand is more like Switzerland than Switzerland. This is a very confusing thing to say, but maybe you know what I mean.

For this one, I’m afraid I did have to jump a fence. But this lake near Wanaka (Lake Hawea) is pretty much completely devoid of houses or any lake-side habitation. You can drive for hours and never see anybody or anything. I’m not big on jumping fences, but it seemed pretty harmless here… and, besides, I just HAD to take a photo of this tree! You know how it is…

Very nice Trey, like the texture you put with it and the stand alone tree. Cool.

  • Beautiful, that texture is nice.

  • Beautiful shot. Tree is captivating. Definitely one of my favorite drives over to the west coast. Have you been to Haast/Jackson bay area? Incredible country.

Hi Trey.. a few of us on Google+ started a New Zealand photography locations google map – i guess it’s a bit like a Stuck on Earth list – check it out here: https://maps.google.co.nz/maps/ms?msid=206478249579544059806.0004c8c844f9c2d9b402b&msa=0 or the G+ page here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103163851291575452273/about

  • Beautiful photo, Trey!! I love this one ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Loving this photo Trey. The PP is excellent – really made me do a double take. I think this is a really great example of how photography is art in part by the fact that you can do your own thing to make it more than that provided by the machine it came from. Going to have to check out your textures course next.

The texture really works here. Great image!

  • Great shot! Love the color treatment. Not sure if that’s a result of the texture overlay or one of your Lightroom presets but, looks good. The foreground really pops. Looks 3D. I am itching to go back to NZ in fall. Trying to figure out time of peak fall color.

Nice photo! And love the texture, too… So, how cold is the water?

    Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

Now that you live in New Zealand you should check out Kilmock Bush just west of Invercargill off of Dunns Road on the way to Oreti Beach. The trees are out of this world. I would love to see them through your lens. And while you are there Oreti Beach has some pretty interesting light to play with.

great suggestion! In my Google Earth now ๐Ÿ™‚
