Black Friday Spacial – Check tomorrow!

Tomorrow I’ll give out a great deal on the HDR Video Tutorial!  So get ready…  until then, here is a new image below for you that I just took last night… a little Thanksgiving freshness for you!

Daily Photo – Roanoke Island Lighthouse

I’m visiting family for Thanksgiving here on Roanoke Island, and I went out last night after a storm to take some photos. This area is known for beautiful lighthouses, so I put myself on a little mission.

I didn’t initially plan on going out to take photos. It started with a jog on the beach a bit before sunset. I was jogging north, listening to good music, and the sun was on me. But, ahead of me, the clouds were dark and scary, like the ones circling Mordor. One of those surreal scenes unfolded in front of me… maybe you know the kind. The sun lit everything perfectly below the horizon, and above the horizon was heavy and foreboding. It was then that I decided that it would be an interesting night for photos!

So I jogged back to the house, got my rig, and headed out. All this while, I was still in shorts and a t-shirt, which were now wet with rain since the clouds had come to cover me up on the way home. I drove to this nearby lighthouse, but there was no good way to get this angle. The trees in front were about eight feet high, and there was no break in them… the only thing I could do is pull my car over (a rented minivan), and climb up on top with my tripod. There are not many things more slippery than the top of a wet minivan! So, I’m sure I looked like quite a fool clambering my way up there… but up there I got.

This is probably my favourite type of sky – i always have to go and have a good look any time one like this appears at sunset. I managed to capture a similar scene a few months back which i’ve linked below :-

  • Oh yeah Trey. Just the right timing for that sunset and the lighthouse in just the right spot. The row of trees makes a nice silhouette. (Had to look up the spelling on that word.)

  • Michael Diblicek

    Nice shot trey, wonderful colours.

Beautiful lighthouse and sky Trey!Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Hi Trey, I know this site well as we’ve been vacationing in the OBX off and on since the 60s, mostly during the summer. I have been there a few times for New Years, after the tourists like myself go home and it is a great time to be there. I believe this is the Bodie Island Light ( and I have shot it myself a number of times. the skies on the Outer Banks do some amazing things, Thanks for this memory!

  • Gail Moshier

Wow, Trey, that was quite a trip you went through to get this beautiful photo!!! I don’t know how you managed to get to the top of the minivan, let alone stay up there and set up. WTG! Thanks for sharing, Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family, your Mom(one of my best online friends), and your Dad. And too all the folks in the U.S. reading these posts. 🙂

  • Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. Trey. Sorry my comments have been few and far between, but with work and photo trips, I’ve been BUSY! How was your experience with THE GRID? We sure would have loved to have you in Death Valley this past weekend! I got to hang out with Sly Vegas a lot, so all was good. So I hope you enjoy the time with your family this Thanksgiving. I’ll be processing some photos while my kid plays Minecraft before we join my parents for dinner. I saw your post about you and Ethan playing minecraft. It is so addictive. Seth has set up a server that Ethan is welcome to join anytime, just let us know.

  • Julie Willson

Skys like this one always make for interesting shots. This is beautiful!

    Wow. Gorgeous sunset clouds!
Wouldn’t that have been just perfect if the lighthouse light had been on?

We’ve already enjoyed our Thanksgiving celebrations here in Canada back in October, but I just wanted to wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving Trey.
To all my American ‘Stuck In Customs’ brothers and sisters, happy Thanksgiving!

    Great Shot!
You and Ansel Adams have another thing in common, check out this shot of Adams standing on his “woody” station wagon.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice shot Trey! I was at the Bodiemlighthouse earlier in the summer and didn’t get quite the lighting I was looking for, and schedule didn’t permit me me to get the right shot. It looks like you nailed this one! That was definitely my favorite of all the lighthouses in the Outer Banks and you certainly captured it well.
