A Mercedes in Paris

Renting a Car in Paris

No, I’m not renting the car below. But I am a little flummoxed. I’m taking the train from London to Paris, then spending about a week in France before going to Spain. I can’t decided if I want to go through the trouble of renting a car, or if I should just take trains everywhere. I don’t have quite as much time as I would like to explore the French countryside, so maybe I will stick with trains. My current plan is to spend some time in Paris, then go to Nimes before heading over to the Cote d’Azur. After that I’ll head to Barcelona by train for sure… but… in between, I just can’t decide.

Whenever I travel, I usually go into it with half-a-plan, as you can plainly see. I sometimes like to just figure things out on the fly and be flexible. Sometimes if things are overly planned, they lose some of the spontaneity of the adventure and the required intuitive creativity in dealing with new situations. I don’t know… maybe I am just rationalizing being a hit-and-miss planner.

Daily Photo – A Mercedes in Paris

While walking along the Champs-Élysées in Paris, I came across this really slick Mercedes dealership. I don’t even want to think about what the lease for this space is… but it is super cool.

I wonder if they would have let me walk in and take it out for a spin. I mean, you’re allowed to test-drive cars, right? I wonder if they’d be alarmed if I brought it back with a big Slurpee in the drink holder.

Awesome shot Trey….what??? You’re not renting this?? So like you to take the train on another adventure!

I doubt that they’ll even let you touch that car. It’s an MZB-McLaren and costs about $450,000. Besides, driving it would probably be the death of you. 🙂 With a brake horsepower of 617, a top end of 206mph and reaching 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, it’s really a hyper car and requires a little training to drive.

  • So great pov and interesting blue tones in the background and the reflections on the car. Maybe, I have preferred a square frame around the car. I have a gallery in with Mercedes cars. I have not finished yet the edition of the pictures that were shot in a Mercedes Exhibition, here in Madrid (http://www.flickr.com/photos/servalpepbase/sets/72157624187476486/). And this is a sample of the star car, Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS ‘Gullwing’ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/servalpepbase/4662294174/ or http://www.flickr.com/photos/servalpepbase/4658894874).

I wish you a good trip around Europe and I hope to see Barcelona HDR pic soon.

    Regards,

    Sergio

  • Your comment is awaiting moderation – it probably contained three or more links and the easily-confused Stuck In Customs staff will look at it shortly to see if it really is spam. 3

  • Cool shot Trey, really like the framing you did. Colors are fantastic too. Nicely done!

  • Love the rich colors! I think I see Christmas lights in the trees outside the window to the left. That reminded me of some of your other shots from Paris.

  • cool

Hey Trey – if you do a Photowalk in Barcelona, or need a guide, please contact me! (mtaylor at nzmichele.com) Barcelona is my home town now. It’s a beautiful time of the year to visit, and the humidity has just left the air, courtesy of some brilliant thunderstorms the other night.

Trains is the better way to go if you’re short on time, otherwise you just get too frustrated having to drive past beautiful things to photograph when in a hurry!

When I last rented a car in France to drive through the country side, I kept getting lost through the traffic circles because the signs did not always indicate which exit was for the highway I entered on and intended to follow. A GPS navigator would have helped.

Hey! Love your photos. 😉 Have fun!

  • National Geographic Traveler had an article listing the top 10 train trips in Europe. Number 3 was Paris to Madrid.

Here’s the link to the first page of the article: http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/top-10/european-train-trips/#page=1

You can always rent a car in Spain.

    Trey,
I just came back from holidays in the french countryside, and, moreover, I am doing an internship in France at the moment. I DEFINITELY recommend you rent a car once you have left the greater Paris area : due to the heavy centralization of the country, traveling long distances by train FROM and TO Paris works like a charm and is even faster than flying (Paris-Marseille in 3 hours from one city center to the other… impossible by plane). However, traveling perpendicularly to these Paris-centered high speed connections is a REAL pain in the neck if you try to go by train. Example : Clermont-Ferrand – Toulouse is about 400km, takes 8h, by car it takes 4-5 plus you get to drive through an amazing countryside…
I definitely recommend a GPS navigator, too… most car rental firms offer them for around 30€ if I recall correctly.
If I can be of any help, just write me an email.

  • Thanks all! Interesting feedback… Michele – I’d love to do a photowalk in Barcelona but have not really planned it out properly – also not sure what days I will be there for sure 🙂

  • I love this image! What a great way to showcase a car and a really cool one at that :o)

Hey Trey. I was in Spain earlier this year. I found Segovia, (just outside Madrid) to be a fantastic place to take photos. The interior of the Castle, called the Alcazar of Segovia was just such a beautiful place. The rest of the town is very picturesque also. It reached via high speed train from Madrid. Takes about half an hour!

  • Michele

Well – even if not a full-blown photowalk, I’d love to keep you company – if only to protect you from the pickpockets! 🙂

Email me at the above if you need a hand while you’re here in Barca. We can photograph the city and talk about New Zealand!

    cheers.
