Chicago Thaws into Spring

Here is a shot of our pilots for the shot below, Bill and Jeff, circling back towards the city about an hour before the sunset.

Daily Photo – Chicago Thaws into Spring

I was lucky enough to be in a helicopter over Chicago at sunset. A big thanks to Fiona and our pilots Bill and Jeff. They took the door off the helicopter for me, which sounds like a good idea until you are experiencing 100 MPH of chopper backwash while hanging out trying to get this kind of shot!

It was a fun day. We stayed up for a few hours and circled around the city several times. I got hundreds of amazing shots. I haven’t had time to process any of them except for this one… but I wanted to go ahead and get it up since I know the Twitter and Facebook crowd has been waiting on it since I mentioned it on there. Also my mom was very worried about the whole door-off-the-helicopter thing.

Right in the center of the shot on the bottom is the famous Navy Pier. We timed this shot to get at the right height the second the sun dipped below the horizon to cast a rainbow of hues into the sky.

  • Wow, Trey . . . absolutely amazing. I’ve unforunately only spent about 2 days in Chicago, and that was on a business trip. This makes me want to book my next trip with strictly photography in mind. Congrats!! And glad to see the D3X can handle 100mph chopperwash 🙂

Really nice! (As always…) I’m anxious to click over to Flicker to explore the original file.

  • WOW! AWESOME! I can’t think of anything else to say because my jaw is on the floor. WOW!!!!

  • Yeah thats awesome! I’ve been looking into taking one over Tahoe looks so fun! I like the ferris wheel, brings it all together. Proper!

  • Stunning! Nuff said…

  • WOW…. So amazing!

  • wow! this is great… been to chicago several times but never saw this skyline photo…

  • I love it, Trey!! Awesome shot!! I am jealous of this one…especially since I used to fly helicopters, and my first cross-country trip in flight school was to Chicago in a small Jet Ranger…great shot!!

  • Thanks! Yes I feel very lucky to be up in a chopper at the perfect time!

  • Wow!!! I think that’s my favorite out of all your photos!!

  • Fiona

I feel very lucky that you shared your knowledge and experience with me that day. Very lucky. Thanks for the great little adventure. This first shot…. takes my breath away. Great job, Trey.

This look like a snapshot from the beginning of a sci-fi movie. Amazing as always. Was it taken with the pier positioned as is? or did you do some cropping for the symmetry?

  • Matthew G.

    Hey, Try geart picture.
I was woundering how you did this. With one photo into HDR or with many photos into HDR like you normaly would, because if you did it the normal way thats crazy the chopper would be moving and stuff haha. Oh and one last thing I come every day to you sit before school, and it got me into HDR and now im selling some of my work as a freshman in hight school thanks Try:)

  • Great Chicago image – wish I had a chance to take a helicopter ride over the old hometown.

  • pilot on the right looks like Mark Wauberg! your shot is incredible…as always! not sure about that whole “door off the helicopter” idea, though, I’m with your mom on that one :O).

  • Awesome picture, Trey!!!!! Just beautiful. We all thank you and the pilots for getting to just the right spot at the right time!!!! Great job done by all. Also, one of my favorite city pictures you have posted!!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow – beautiful shots. What day were you here? Because I was wandering about Lincoln Park Zoo a few days ago and saw a helicopter hovering nearby, but it wasn’t a news chopper . . . hmmmm!

  • Jeff looks like Matt Damon!

Yeah, I think I saw your helicopter too. Was it on Sunday?

The Trump Tower has really changed the city’s skyline. Great shot

  • joe

    holy crap. that’s awesome.

  • Haha wonderful – thanks all for the nice feedback.

This was a single-shot RAW HDR. I tried my best to take it right at the point of perfect symmetry – I’m pretty happy with the results. It’s kind of like a game up there… just trying to get it all perfect. hehe

  • Your pictures could make anyplace look awesome. I love all the colors from the sky down to the water – and the ferris wheel looks cool just about dead-center! Thank you!

  • Stunning shot, just wow!

  • Stunning skyline photo! I look forward to more beautiful photos.

  • Thanks guys – very much! 🙂

Excellent. Chicago is my hometown. I live in Oregon now and you make me a little homesick with this image. Oddly enough, the wind pattern on the water mimics some of the architectural designs of the city.

  • Stephen Zacharias

Yikes! Hanging out of open chopper door isn’t my idea of having fun. None the less nice photo. Like how you captured the city of Chicago.

  • Mike – You are a madman … Whenever you’re in Chicago look me up … So I can GO WITH YOU !!!
