Trey’s Favorite Things

Welcome!

I often get asked about the things I uses in my professional and personal life so I decided to compile this list of my favorite things! Click on the images to check the current price and pick one up for yourself.

Leave a comment to let me know what you think or if you have a new product I should check out!

Photography Equipment

Panasonic Lumix GX1
Priced at about $499, this Panasonic Lumix camera is highly recommended if your budget is keeping you at around the $500 level.

Panasonic Lumix GX1

Sony NEX-7
See my full Sony NEX-7 Review. In short, this is really a great camera. I carry it! It is compact and powerful. It can be used it almost any photographic situation and is one of the best models available in this class.

Nikon D800
See my full Nikon D800 Review. This is currently my main camera. It shoots a massive 36 megapixels and has all the professional-level features associated with high-end DSLRs.

Nikon 14-24mm Wide Angle Lens
See my full Nikon 14-24 Review. This is the best wide angle lens I have ever used. Whenever I am standing with a fellow photographer that has a Nikon DSLR, I immediately force them to remove whatever lens they happen to have on and put this one on so they can try it out.

Nikon 28-300mm Lens
See my full Nikon 28-300 Review. I shoot so many daytime / sunrise / sunset landscapes — the range of this lens from 28-300 is amazing.

Nikon 50mm f/1.4 Lens
See my full Nikon 50mm Review. This 50mm is a fantastic lens! You have a very shallow Depth of Field (DOF), which means that your subject will be in sharp focus and everything else will be deliciously out of focus. You can shoot in very low light conditions without a flash, giving your photos a very natural look.

Nikon 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens
See my full Nikon 16mm Fisheye Review. A really fun lens that seems to work best when there is just A LOT to capture in a scene, and traditional wide angle just can’t cut it.

TVC-33 Tripod Legs from Really Right Stuff
An excellent set of legs for most small to medium-sized cameras. I love them, they are lighter and stronger than the comparable Gitzo.

BH-55 Head from Really Right Stuff
This company makes remarkable products… When you go to the site, you can choose the best setup for your camera. This is what I use on my professional cameras.

Moshi Cardette Ultra Memory Card Reader
This one is sleek, stylish, and the USB cord folds up inside for easy travel. Moshi makes cool stuff. Also try out their Vortex Earbuds I mention below.

Hoodman HoodLoupe 3.0
This helps you see your screen on those bright days.

Sanho HyperDrive 500GB Photo Backup Storage & Viewer
A super-awesome way to backup your stuff while on the road. It’s basically a giant hard drive with a big pretty screen where you can review stuff.

Hoodman 16GB CompactFlash Card
I always use Hoodman cards. They work great. They’re fast and ultra-dependable!

Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter
I never seem to have enough battery when I really need it!

HyperJuice External Battery
This is something I carry with me on most trips. Battery issues are always a, well, issue.

Skooba Design Cable Stable DLX
Oh bag-o-cords, how you grow, how you grow! This helps me keep things organized.

All-in-One Travel Power Plug Adapter
I prefer these little jobs to those massive “kits” that are bulky and unnecessary. This does most everything in a compact little unit!

Triple Bubble Level Spirit Level Mount
It looks so cool on top of your camera. It is function. It is an amazing conversation-starter! Everyone walks over to me, ignores the multi-thousand-dollar camera, and asks about this little green cube!

Home Office

Apple Thunderbolt Display
There is nothing better to view your photos. Period.

Apple MacBook Pro 17-Inch Laptop
I use this. It’s a real workhorse! If you can afford it, also get the SSD.

Apple MacBook Air
This lighter laptop is great for getting work done, but I don’t use it for processing photos… I use the MacBook Pro for that.

Promise Pegasus 12TB R6 RAID System with Thunderbolt Port
I bought TWO of these! Each one of them is the 12TB flavor. They connect via Thunderbolt, and they seem as fast as SSDs!

Wacom Intuos4 Small Pen Tablet
Since I have gotten a tablet, it’s changed the way I process photos. I now can do subtle changes in a more elegant manner.

Wacom Bamboo Stylus for iPad
If you want to get a stylus, this is the way to go!

Logitech HD Pro Webcam
Even though the built-in webcam for the Mac is not so bad, this one blows it away. It’s almost too good, showing my many imperfections!

Samson Shockmount Spider Mount
This is part of my 3-part microphone system I use. It’s the best in it’s class.

Samson USB Condenser Microphone
See Above

Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm
See Above

ColorMunki Photo
The best and easiest tool for color calibration.

Photography Fun

GoPro HD HERO2
What a fun camera! I took it on vacation to take underwater shots while snorkeling.

Lomography OKTOMAT Compact 35mm Camera
This one is kind of crazy too… you’ll get good photos, and it’s a conversation starter!

Lifestyle

Apple iPad
I use this for everything from reading to games to showing my portfolio.

Kindle Fire
I also bought a Kindle Fire. It’s great for reading books and is a great challenger to the iPad.

Samsung I9250 Galaxy Nexus
This is my phone… I love it.

Moshi Vortex Earphones
The best earphones (in-ear) that I’ve ever used.

Moshi iGlaze 4 for iPhone 4
Another great Moshi product to give your Apple products even more style.

Moshi Concerti Case iPad
I have about 10 cases, and this one is my favorite!

Moshi VersaCover for iPad Mini
I got a new iPad Mini and I immediately got this Moshi VersCover. It’s folds in many different ways.

Sony Blu-ray Player with Google TV
I really like the Google TV. The apps are great and my whole family enjoys using it.

Apple TV
I also like my Apple TV, which I have on a different TV in the house. It’s handy with a ton of functionality.

Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player
The Roku is another great way to stream media into your home.

Sonos Play:5 All-In-One Wireless Music Player
I have 4 of those Sonos players (of different varieties) scattered around the house.

Dyson tower fan
A new kind of fan without blades.

Xbox 360 Console
I’m a hardcore gamer, and this is great for our whole family.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
A great game if you like immersive RPGs.

Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter
I bought two of these at Christmas, and they are huge hits!

Lexington Lounge Chair and Ottoman
This is strange thing to have on my list, but it is a really cool chair at a reasonable price! I have one!

The Unanswered Question
Six Talks at Harvard by Leonard Bernstein
I recommend these DVDs to everyone – they were first recommended to me by Hans Zimmer.

Pants by Bluff Works
Even though I’m a blue-jean-wearin-kinda-guy, I’ve taken to wearing these when I go out on quick photo adventures. One thing you can’t tell from the photos is how LIGHT they are. They also wrap up into a tight little tube so they are easy to travel with… the no wrinkles is a nice bonus too! I also throw them on when on the road when I need to be just a bit more dressy than jeans…

Wait, what? Favorite phone is a Galaxy Nexus, but favorite case is for an iPhone? :P
Next time I’m in your town I’m coming over to play with all your toys. It’s nice that you gave a sub-$500 camera option for the “occasional” photographer that want a decent pic without sinking a bunch of money. Thanks for sharing. Possible future article: what apps/software do you use?

  • David Neff

Great list and a brilliant use of affiliate marketing ;-)

I too love my Samsung phone.  The display is stunning and the 5 mp camera is so good that some people think the photos I shoot with it were taken with my Canon 20D!  Best of luck in New Zealand Trey.

Nice list Trey. The Lexington Lounge Chair and Ottoman seem VERY similar to Eames Lounge and Ottoman. I wonder how they got away with it.

  • Nicolas Pelletier

Like the way you formatted this page. Thanks for the list. I’ll now follow the few links I’ve opened in other tabs!

  • Michael Doliveck

Great list and you have excellent taste. I made a list of my own and I think you and your readers will find it helpful. In fact I bet you will use at least one of the tips if not 4 or 5. I present to you… The Traveler’s Ultimate Packing List- http://www.balifornian.com/ultimate-packing-list/
Thanks for all the inspiration over the years Trey!
    Warm regards,Michael

    Thanks! :)

This is an amazing list, trey. Thanks for compiling it. You have a great taste. Not many people let others know the gear they use. Oh btw., totally agree with you about skyrim. :)

  • aaronmeder

Very nice! Do you use one Pegasus RAID as a backup for the other or how are you backing up this massive thing?

  • Casper van Zyl

You do have good taste, when you work hard these are the things money buy’s. When you don’t have money ,you improvise thats life. Never heard of Hoodman, always use Sandisk. Thanks for the info.

I’ve never heard of the Triple Bubble Level Spirit Mount before and I desperately need it! Thanks! I’m wondering if you have any travel tri-pod recommendations? Preferably one that would fit inside a standard Jansport size backpack. Thanks!

  • Mark Surnin

Hello Trey, I’m wondering what strap you are using, because I noticed that it is a shoulder strap, isn’t it? So I’m curious about how you attach the camera on the tripod – do you have to take the strap off every time in order to screw the tripod head in? Probably not – so what strap do you use? =)

  • Gavin Jackson

Thanks for this list! I seem to recall a list of books worth reading (I can’t seem to find it on your site), have just finished the second Rothfuss book based on your recommendation and am hankering to find something just as good, all of your recommendations have been great so far!

What’s your beef w/ Canon? Just curious.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com Trey Ratcliff

I don’t mind Canon at all.. I just know Nikon systems really well :)

  • Michael Smith

Wow so many cool toys! Iwish, I wish! http://www.smith-photography.net

  • Andrea Boyle

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been looking for a portable download device for field photography use (i don’t carry my laptop into the field to download my cards) and so I was interested in your suggestion of the Sanho Hyperdrive 500 GB backup storage, Sounds perfect, but is no longer available. Any other suggestions? I’d love something that doesn’t need a computer.
If not, HEY, SOMEONE OUT THERE NEEDS TO START INVENTING SOMETHING WE ALL NEED! Thanks… :)

Hi Trey, the Hoodloupe 3.0. Perfect fit for D800?

  • TMB

Hey Trey – where can we get those cool GOOGLE Camera Straps you have?

  • Manny

What do you recommend for a photo printer?

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Hi Manny,

For photo printers for the home, it’s a tough call. If they’re any good, generally they use so much ink that it ends up being a hidden cost that is very expensive. We use SmugMug for printing here. These days photo “labs” have very good services that are probably less than the cost of printer + ink + photo paper.

That said, I’m getting good results, believe it or not, with my Kodak Office Hero. I don’t print photos very often, but it seems to be good quality and reasonable ink usage. Epson used to be known to be ink “vampires,” but I’m not sure if that’s still the case.

  • Kyle VanEtten

Trey do you have a remote shutter release that you recommend?

  • http://www.facebook.com/leon206 Leonard Carter

Awesome list!!! I’ve pinned some of these items and I’ll most likely be buying some of the others. Thanks again for all of your contributions.
