Hasselblad X1D Review

I recently added some more photos to the Hasselblad X1D Review here on the site so, go have a look! However, if you are following the blog lately, then you may know I’m switching mostly over to the Sony A7R Mark 3!

Aurora HDR 2018 Free Update

As is often the case, the photo below was processed with Aurora HDR and it has just been updated for both Mac and Windows. If you already have Aurora you can automatically update from inside the app. If you don’t, grab it (including a free trial option) in the store! It’s now in its 11th iteration and the team at Skylum is making steady updates.

For those who have Aurora, here’s what’s new…

WINDOWS USERS

  • Improved Sliders: You can now directly enter values into a slider with the keyboard.
  • Improved presets: Applying multiple presets now handled correctly.
  • Cropping improvements: The cropped state of an image is now correctly captured in the native Aurora HDR file.

MAC USERS

  • Batch process faster: We’ve fine-tuned our bracket-detecting algorithm to speed up batch processing.
  • Align brackets better: We’ve updated our alignment algorithm to improve hand-held HDR photography.
  • Adobe plug-in improvements: The plugins for Adobe products have been performance tuned.
  • Improved cross-platform files: We’ve fixed issue with cropped photos created on Windows.
  • Improved user experience: We’ve refined the software to make it easier to use based on user feedback and testing.

Daily Photo – The Hills Near Arrowtown

This was one of my first stops when I got my Hasselblad X1D. Up at The Hills country club, there are some very beautiful rolling hills in almost every direction. Since I’m a landscape photographer, it’s a simple turkey-shoot! You can just kind of look in any direction and get a good shooting situation. That makes testing the camera a bit easier. I found myself going right into Manual mode because of the Live EVF. I still had to use the camera for about a month before I was totally comfortable with it, however.

Japanese Graveyard

Fun Video About Japan

Here’s three things you may not know…

Daily Photo – Japanese Graveyard

Frequent readers know that one of my strange hobbies is visiting Japanese graveyards. I know it’s probably a bit macabre, but these are little parallel universes. They’re often embedded in the middle of remote nature and there is just a strange and interesting energy to them. People buy these red torii gates as part of a Shintoist practice. The big ones can cost many thousands of dollars but the smaller ones are less expensive.

Easy Photo Shooting in Venice

Insta 360 Review

Here’s a friendly reminder to check out my Insta 360 Review that I finished last month. It’s a heck of a cool camera, even if you’re not that serious about it. I think it’d be great fun to make family videos to share with the extended family too!

Daily Photo – Easy Photo Shooting in Venice

If you enjoy taking photos of people but are a little afraid of the social awkwardness of the practice, just book a room in Venice during Carnivale! These people LOVE having their photo taken. They basically slowly waltz around Venice all day long and pause here and there so people can take their photos. They don’t charge money; they just enjoy being the center of attention. We all know these kind of people, like my daughter Scarlett for example, who you may know from my Instagram stories.

Dining Car in Paris

Passport Members check the Vault!

I believe we have over 60 videos in the vault now if you’re a Passport member. Right now, they are sorted by most-recent, but we’re coming up with another way to surf through these!

Passport freebie

Every now and then we take one of those videos from the vault and pop it out for everyone to see and enjoy! Here’s one about processing Lupins!

Kalebra Kelby Interview

I sat down for a long “Up Close and Personal” interview with my friend Kalebra Kelby. It was a great talk, and I hope you enjoy it. Their team just put together a few highlights here for you. The whole thing is over at KelbyOne along with two of my new classes. One is for Aurora HDR 2018 and the other is for Plotagraph.

Daily Photo – Dining Car in Paris

What kind of travel blogger am I in that I find this awesome restaurant in Paris that looks like an old train car and then I forget the name! Well, actually it was kind of touristy and silly, but still kind of awesome. It was right by our little crappy hotel there and I saw it almost every day when I would go out to take photos. I finally decided to take the team over there for a bite and a drink and took this photo while waiting for our mediocre food!

Inside a cathedral at Tibidabo

Reminder on Reviews

We have three new reviews on the site here recently! There’s also mini-First-Impressions of the Sony A7r Mark 3 for Passport Members that you don’t want to miss.

Daily Photo – Inside a cathedral at Tibidabo

Remember the Spanish cathedral from a few days ago? Here is a shot from the interior. I was pleasantly surprised at how colorful and festive the painting was on the interior. Sometimes these cathedrals can be a bit pensive severe, warning worshippers of the infinite power of the Almighty. I quite prefer the bright and fanciful colors!

A trip up the Volcano

Don’t miss the first three Antarctica videos we released!

These are kind of fun videos I think! If you’re a Passport Member then you can watch all three of them right now. 3/3 is the one that has the most “photo advice” whereas the others are just more informal and behind-the-scenes kind of stuff where you see me build a snow cave and junk like that.

Here’s a link to the first video!

Here’s a link to the second video!

Here’s a link to the third video, enjoy!

Daily Photo – A trip up the Volcano

See that volcano in the distance? It doesn’t look too far, does it? Assuming there was a road to the top, it would probably take about six hours to get up there by car! Stu and I asked if we could commandeer that truck and go on a joyride to the top. They told us no, that it probably would not be a good idea because it’s actually an active volcano. We begrudgingly took their advice.

I love Nice!

European Tour Highlights

This is one of my favorite videos we made in the last year! Thanks again to Olya and the team!

Daily Photo – I love Nice!

I took this during our short day in Nice, France while we were on the European Tour. After a breakfast stop with mimosas, we took a stroll down the beachfront and ended up in this hashtaggy area where a bunch of locals were in full French party mode! This is kind of a “throwaway photo” – and by that, I mean, I take a lot of quick photos here and there with never any plans to publish them. Just tiny little moments here and there that I think are interesting. I don’t publish 95% of the photos I take… I’ve always thought about making a Tumblr or another Instagram account called “Trey’s Throwaway Photos” that are little moments like this. I don’t know what to do with my other 95% of photos… they are not terrible, but they’re not portfolio-quality either… just kind of in between… little ideas like this.

The Two Towers of Lisbon

Three Times for Rene

This location marks the third time Rene has fallen into the water with his camera. The first is when he was trying to impress a girl and stepped on a sea urchin. The second is when he was with me in Venice and fell in a canal. This is the third, during a long exposure when a wave came up and started taking his tripod out to sea and he made a sliding skid into the ocean to save it. A great laugh was had by all!

Daily Photo – The Two Towers of Lisbon

This is the famous Torre de Belém along the edge of Lisbon. It’s an old tower dating back about 500 years. Just out front is a little model of the same place, so I thought it might be fun to do a little artsy photo of the model with the real thing in the background. It’s a little obvious of a shot, I know, but still kinda fun.

A Cathedral in the Clouds Surrounded by an Amusement Park

A Tibidabo Double-Play!

Today I’m showing two photos of the same place near Barcelona. It’s a beautiful cathedral called Tibidabo.

Daily Photo – A Cathedral in the Clouds Surrounded by an Amusement Park

So I like this second photo better. I obviously heavily processed it with one of my Lightroom Presets. I believe it was one of my “Sandstorm” ones from Burning Man. I think this place is beautiful, but I can’t figure out why they put an amusement park up there. It makes it all a bit garish, I think. Even in this photo, you can see part of a rollercoaster in the lower right. Oh, this second photo was taken with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro.

Barcelona At Night

Thinking of being a digital Nomad?

I am! Well, sort of. Yeah, I guess I am. This basically means you are kind of homeless and just jump around the world in search of awesome places to “be” while having a decent place to stay, great food, and, maybe most importantly, Fast Internet! If you’re looking to try this, check out Nomad List. You’ll see today’s Daily Photo location of Barcelona up there at #2 on the list! 🙂

Daily Photo – Barcelona At Night

What a pretty city, eh? I was happy to be in good health this time in Barcelona. My first visit was about 5 years ago with my wife and I had the flu. Even though I was very excited to be there and take photos, I was just kinda low-energy-man. That’s not like me! I’m normally full of vim and vigor. So, when I’m low-energy-man, I’m like a different person. But not this time, this time I was well-rested and ready to go!
