Stuck In Customs Community

Most of you don’t fit into the one below, but all of you can come join in the action in the Stuck In Customs Community. Thank you all for posting so many photos there and having a good time! I’ve asked the moderators to please help out and keep “approving” photos. Many are getting marked as spam by the algorithms! But I think after we approve a few of your shots, they will automatically work in the future…

New Zealand Photo Community

Speaking of New Zealand, I started up a little New Zealand Photographers community on Google+. Here’s a little sample of what it looks like, featuring a photo of Wayne Lorimer!

Daily Photo – The Lupins at Lake Tekapo

I stopped at Lake Tekapo on the way to Christchurch for the great event there. Jason Law had told me all about the lupins here, so I was keen to see for myself! It was good to meet Jason and his crew there for a bit of shooting at sunset!

I enjoyed this spot so much that I came back on my drive home from Christchurch. And, if I were to speculate, I think I’ll visit this place about 1,000 more times! 🙂

New Puppy in the Family!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

A few months ago, I asked you guys what to do about a new puppy! There were many good suggestions, but many involved some kind of a poodle-mix. So that is what we got — a labradoodle. The kids saw her blue eyes and decided to call her… Blueberry! 🙂

Blueberry

There are six more photos in this Album on Google+. And I picked out one of my favorites to share with you. Thanks again!

Daily Photo – Hard Drinking on a Disney Cruise

I guess if that is what you want to do on a Disney Cruise, this is the place to do it. What an amazing bar this is! This is the second photo I posted from this location, and it shows another one of the dynamic backgrounds that swap in and out every few minutes.

I spent most of my time up very close to the screens. Not only do they change — but they are also fully animated, showing all the traffic of cars and pedestrians as they move around the city.

Across the Estate

Stuck In Customs Community on Google+ — Come Share your Photos and Thoughts!

Come join the Stuck In Customs Community on Google+!

Why did I make this? Well, I REALLY want all of you to continue getting to know one another without having to be tied to a discussion of the daily photo! Also, you’ll be able to share your photos there and get to know one another better. There’s also a fun discussion area for you right there in the categories on the left.

I do love it when people link to their photos in the comments, but I think that this could be a much better way, so it is not tied to an individual blog post, if you know what I mean.

Below you can see one of the photos that was shared by Christy Miers! Thanks Christy and thanks everyone else that got an early start in there! 🙂

Paris PhotoWalk Photos

We had an amazing PhotoWalk in Paris! To see all the photos, go check out the Paris PhotoWalk event on Google+!

Daily Photo – Across the Estate

As the event at the chateau was winding down on the final evening, we all dispersed to take late night photos in the dusk. There were good angles everywhere. One of my favorite was up under this tree. But it was also very interesting to watch where everyone else walked. It was kind of like a private photowalk… I find it endlessly fascinating to watch other photographers while I am also taking photos. I don’t know why this is!

Google+ Communities Launch – The Photo Community

Huge new Google+ Feature: Google Communities! The Photo Community

Come see The Photo Community (Google+ should activate it at some point here…) – Come join as soon as you can!

What are communities? They are very similar to regular Google+ accounts, except they are not tied to a person — they are tied to a passion or an idea. This will allow threaded conversations to begin and live independently in the world of Google+.

Think of a piazza in Italy where the whole community comes to hang out, eat gelato, watch artists, have coffee, and talk about the world as it goes by. To me, this is what a Google+ community is.

Besides making The Photo Community, I am also going to make a private community just for people involved in the Stuck In Customs (my website). That will be a private one — invite only. This will replace the Sorry 1990’s Forums that currently run on the website. I’m so sick of that old style of forums… aren’t you? I assume everyone will be able to make public and private Google+ Communities soon.

You’ll notice that The Photo Community has categories on the left. This is a cool thing that allows conversations to be established within certain buckets. Here are a few of the categories I set up, with more to come:

General Discussion – a place for everything… it’s sort of a catch-all for everyone just to hang out.

Critique Me! – Do you have a photo that you would like critiqued? Just post it in a new thread here, and you’ll get it analyzed. I can’t promise it will all be rosy, but we would prefer it if the feedback is civil and constructive! 🙂

Gear Talk – If you have a particular penchant for the hardware side of things, this is a great place to have these discussions and ask questions.

Newbie Photo Zone – Are you just getting into photography and have a question? This will be a great area for you… don’t be shy!

Moderators

Google+ Communities can also have moderators, which will be very helpful. I’m going to start setting those up today to take the burden off of me as an individual. As a rule, we’ll try to make sure the community is a positive happy place… Back to that Italian piazza example above, these will be the kind old-lady-shop-owners that come kick the cretins out of the piazza.

Features to come?

Here’s a few features I’d like to see in upcoming iterations. Google has a tradition of quickly iterating on design to improve the user experience.

– Allow commenters to embed photos in a thread — this is especially handy for photographers, and I think it would also be handy over on the food-related groups!

– Allow moderators to have a “sticky” or community-news post that doesn’t get pushed down the stream.

– Any other ideas you have? Put them in the comment

Daily Photo – The Rising Setting Sun

I’ve tried to detect pattens for when you see these streaming bits of sun at sunrise and sunset. At first, I thought it was just related to moisture and particulate in the air. Then I thought it was related to clouds five+ miles away that are naturally broken up with gaps between them of several hundred meters. Now I think it’s a combination of the two. Maybe this explains why it is so rare.

Now that I live in the mountains, I never see the horizon any more. It doesn’t bother me so much, but it is harder to get these kind of shots. Those of you that also live with no horizon know what I mean! 🙂

Lake Hayes and Arrowtown

New Category Today – Arrowtown

Every so often I add a new category to the LONG LIST of locations on the right. That long list is starting to feel a little silly! I wonder if there is a better way to do it… I’m open to ideas! 🙂

Daily Photo – Lake Hayes and Arrowtown

I’m still getting to know my new area here in New Zealand, but I feel like I’m ignoring this side! Looking the other way (away from Queenstown) is nearby Arrowtown and Lake Hayes. If you plan on coming down to Queenstown, don’t forget to set aside a day to explore this area as well.

I’ve marked this place in Stuck On Earth if you want to go see exactly where to go to see this view.

HDR Tutorial and More for the Christchurch Photo Event

I know we have many people coming to Christchurch this week for the big event! For anyone new or just getting into post-processing photos, here’s a collection of links and stuff from the HDR Tutorial here on the site.

Software I use (in order of importance):

  • For Macs: Aurora HDR Pro (required)I worked with Macphun for over a year to build the ultimate HDR software!
  • For Windows: Photomatix Pro (required) – Save money by using the code “TREYRATCLIFF” – grab it from the Photomatix website (there’s also a free trial version that leaves a watermark).
  • Photoshop (recommended) – You can buy Photoshop (click) right from the Adobe website, and begin the download. You can also use Photoshop Elements, although I do not recommend it in my Photoshop Review because it does not allow other robust plugins. Now, if you follow the tutorial to the final steps, you will see that I suggest using Photoshop to “clean up” problems from Photomatix above. So, it is not absolutely necessary, but it is recommended.
  • Noiseware Professional (optional) – I have tried a multitude of “noise reduction” software packages. You’ll notice that the HDR process can create a bit of noise, to say the least. I use Noiseware Professional.  Online, you can order the Full Suite for Windows or the Full Suite for Mac to get all their products and save money (I use them all – see my Reviews).  Or, you can just go to the Imagenomic website and just choose Noiseware Professional.
    • Note:  After you “Proceed to Checkout”, use the Imagenomic Coupon Code “STUCKINCUSTOMS” to save even more money!
  • Topaz Adjust (optional and awesome) – You can grab it from the Topaz Website. This product can help bring some contrast and pop into the final product. I have a Topaz Adjust Review here on the site if you want to read more. If you can afford a little more, I suggest the whole Topaz Photoshop Bundle since it comes with a lot of other goodies too!
  • What else do I use? – I use many tools and have a blast with them all. If you want other amazing pieces of software that I use, then I suggest you see my onOne Plugin Review.

Daily Photo – The Streets of Mont Saint Michel

I miss this place already!

I had a magical time exploring this place night after night. It never got boring and there were hundreds of little nooks, crannies, staircases, doors, and other mysteries to discover! I even got in the middle of a cat fight while two medieval cats duked it out… the whole place was dead quiet up until the point. That sound of fighting cats is hard to ignore… and then it all went back to quiet after that.

By the way, if you ever come to this amazing place, I suggest you sleep up inside the walled city. There aren’t a lot of rooms up there, so plan ahead. I think it’s better than staying outside of the city, because you get to roam around inside of it at night…

4 Million Followers on Pinterest and the Paris Opera House

Thanks Pinterest Ladies!

I think it’s like 80% female on Pinterest, yes? I’ve never been so popular with girls! Believe me… in high-school… it was rather slow… and not just because I went to an all-boy Catholic Jesuit school!

I’ve released many more photos recently on Pinterest to celebrate the event. You can see them on My Pinterest Page of recent pins. Enjoy, and thanks for following!

Pinterest Show with Kalebra Kelby

Kalebra has a fun show she does about Pinterest. I joined her this week… embedding here because it is fitting for the subject matter! 🙂

Daily Photo – The Paris Opera

I went by this building several times before I even thought about going in. For some reason, it never occurred to me that I might actually be able to go inside and take photos! Of course, I really wanted to go inside, so I was happy when Curtis told me that it’s no problem to get in there.

Next time, I think I’d like to go on a private tour and get some special angles and whatnot. I did get in trouble for using my tripod, but not bad trouble. Just a little trouble. A little trouble ain’t so bad…

Updated Camera Recommendations!

Updated Camera Reviews!

We have updated the Good / Better / Best recommendations on the Camera Reviews page. I’ll paste them below for you, although that linked page has even more information included recommended lenses, software, and more.

Good Camera

Panasonic Lumix GX1

Panasonic Lumix GX1

Priced at about $499, this Panasonic camera is highly recommended if your budget is keeping you at around the $500 level.

If budget is not a concern, I suggest you jump down to the “Better” or “Best” recommendations. However, if budget is your principle concern, then no worries! This Panasonic will serve you well! It has a 16 megapixel sensor and is based on something called the “Micro Four Thirds” standard. This means that there many different lenses you can attach to this camera, which is something you can add over time. If you’re just getting started, there is no need to worry about lenses, since it comes with a servicable 14-42mm lens that will allow wide-angle shots and a little bit of zoom. It also has a slick 3″ touch enabled LCD screen.

Better Camera

Sony NEX-7

Sony NEX-7

Starting around $1,300 which includes an 18-55mm lens.

See my full Sony NEX-7 Review. In short, this is really a great camera. I carry it! It is compact and powerful. It can be used it almost any photographic situation and is one of the best models available in this class. I use it to take photos of everything, from kids to landscapes to architecture to objects. This tiny 24 megapixel beast has a thousand other features that those clever Japanese crammed inside… see the full Sony NEX-7 Review for more information and sample photos.

Best DSLR Camera

Nikon D800

Nikon D800

Starting at $3,000 for the camera body.

See my full Nikon D800 Review. This is currently my main camera. I also carry the Sony NEX-7 above as a second camera to get quick shots here and there. But this Nikon D800 is a bigger, traditional DSLR camera. It shoots a massive 36 megapixels and has all the professional-level features associated with high-end DSLRs. For me, I prefer this over the Nikon D4 which is almost twice as expensive. You can see many sample photos and read more in my full Nikon D800 Review

Daily Photo – The Hypercity of Shanghai

When you are up in one of the taller buildings in Shanghai, you can look in almost any direction and see a Blade-Runneresque view. It’s always staggering. I’d love to see a time-lapse of Shanghai being built up over the last 30 years… that would be amazing.

Road Trip to the Moeraki Boulders

Christchurch Event Details

We’ve updated the Photography Workshops page with more details.

I’ll be seeing you at the Copthorne Hotel Commodore located at 449 Memorial Avenue, Burnside in Christchurch on Thursday, December 6th, 2012, from 9:30am until 6:00 pm. Also, we’ll be getting you all the RAW files beforehand so you can work along with me if you wish! 🙂

Road Trip to the Moeraki Boulders

This was a very fun trip! I’ve decided to include three photos today instead of just one!

Road Trip to the Moeraki Boulders We stayed overnight in a little town called Moeraki, which is not surprisingly right by the Moeraki Boulders. Daily Photo – Moeraki Boulders at Sunrise

A group of people from NZIPP went out for an overnight road trip to this amazing place on the east coast. I’ve always wanted to shoot them at sunrise, but it kind of requires you to sleep pretty close by. I live in Queenstown, which is about 3-4 hours away, and that would mean a 2 AM wake-up time in the summer!

One of the tricky things about these boulders is ensuring you arrive at low-tide. At high-tide, they are almost totally inaccessible… so timing a sunrise with a low-tide takes a bit of planning. Thanks to Jason Law and NZIPP for the nice invite!
