Inside the Secret Base

Interview on Chinese TV

Hehe this was a crazy scene… I don’t even really know what happened the entire time… I spoke very slowly, btw, so that they could translate.

Daily Photo – Inside the Secret Base

If I had a team of superheroes, this is where we would meet. I have no immediate plans for this, but I’ve been looking for a good spot just in case this happens. The only problem with this particular spot is that it is owned by a government-owned broadcasting company in China. I don’t know how I could possibly talk them into selling it to me.

On the bottom level, there was a very serious looking military-style guard. I tried to take a photo of him with my Google Glass, but he waved no, so I just winked. πŸ™‚

Endless Sunset in Alaska

Arrested Development

Anyone watching the new season of Arrested Development? I’ve started re-watching the first few seasons to get ready for the new ones… I’m very excited Netflix brought it back. I hope they bring back Firefly next! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Endless Sunset

Here’s another recent sunset from Alaska. I took this one evening after dinner when I went on a stroll on Deck 10. These are all handheld, as I see no use in using a tripod on a ship to shoot off the edge of the ship.

I was a little worried about noise, but it was all handled more than easily enough in Lightroom and Photomatix.

Mystery Glacier

Name the Glacier

Who’s the first to come up with the name of this glacier? In some ways, this is a very lame trick for you to tell me the name of the glacier because I forgot. I heard it while I was there, but now I’ve totally forgotten. But, when I hear it, I’ll know it’s the right one! I’ll check in soon (traveling today), to see who is right! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Mystery Glacier

These sea lions were fighting for space on this buoy in the middle of the open sea in front of the glacier. They would jump out of the water and try to fight one another for the relaxing spot. Just under the water was a shelf of land that plummeted to the depths and provided a rich array of fish for the sea lions. It’s a handy place to hang out, and the buoy is an even handier place to take a mid-lunch nap!

Classical Chinese Shoes

Cool Camera Clip? Yes!

I saw this Kickstarter for this Capture Camera Clip v2. Man, that thing looks pretty slick! I’ve seen many versions… and this one looks interesting.

Daily Photo – Classical Chinese Shoes

I don’t know much about women’s shoes. I’ll openly admit that. So, I don’t really know much about these either except that they are really interesting and must be hard to walk on! It’s an older style, obviously, and I wonder if Chinese ladies used to walk on these all the time in the olden days. I bet smart people in the audience will know, however! πŸ™‚

Overloaded and Throttled by Flickr! Stuck On Earth for the Mac – Update

A crazy ride with Flickr

First, let me thank Marissa Mayer for taking this to the next level! Yay for Flickr/Yahoo!

As many of you know, Stuck On Earth has been immensely popular, just passing over a million updates on iOS for the iPad. Then we released the Android version, and now the Mac version is in final testing (see below if you want to join the open beta today!). The app is totally free and has been a personal labor of love for me and the rest of the team. I built it first for myself, since I wanted a new kind of travel guide, one that focused on visiting the best locations to go stand and take photos, which also happens to be the most beautiful places either in your own backyard or for your upcoming vacation.

Seeing beautiful places when you travel is perhaps the greatest aspiration for many people around the world. I wanted to make that more efficient, fun, and approachable for everyone, so we built Stuck On Earth. That’s why we call it, “The ultimate travel guide for explorers, photographers, and daydreamers!”

The Problem with Flickr – Throttling

It turns out the app was so popular that we were seeing all kinds of strange bugs, such as pictures not showing up. This was especially true of the newly upgraded Mac version because it has a really cool feature in that it pre-loads the photos so you never have to wait while flipping through photos to find a good place to take photos. We found out that many photos were getting denied (black screens!) because there was just too much demand.

Interview just before launch at Buck’s with Robert Scoble

Here’s the original video right when we were about to launch. I didn’t know how big it was gonna be back then!

Update – Marissa saves the day!

Is she the Dagny Taggart of the Internet? Maybe! πŸ™‚

So now, thanks to an upgrade in the relationship, all throttling has been turned off and we have full access, unencumbered to the billions of photos inside of Flickr. Now everyone will be able to use the app with no issues at all, and I think you’re really gonna love the Mac version. Using this at 6000 or more pixels across is a sight to behold.

What is Stuck On Earth?

Hehe… maybe I should have started with this video

Beta Test the Mac Version now!

Try now, even before it gets into the App Store for Free!

Enjoy! All I ask, is that if you have any bugs that you contact [email protected]. The amazing development team here will patch up any problems before official release. Here are some cool new features beyond the Android and iOS versions, and even well beyond the original video we created below!

– In the background, we download all the images so that you can quickly cycle through all the images in a given area when looking at Featured Photos (the main view)

– Stretch your window as wide as you want, even 10,000+ pixels across multiple screens!

– Double click (or use two fingers up and down) to zoom in and out of the map

– Try the DOWNLOAD ALL button in the lower left to grab all the images from the window and turn them into a new trip.

– Swap the view around from Satellite to Standard to Hybrid to get another view

– Start building your trips NOW for submissions for the Editor’s Pick! See below.

– Need Trip-Ideas? Easy! Just click on the HOME and go to the Featured Lists to see things like Top 50 Castles on Earth or Top 50 Secret Spots in New York City.

– Want to change your “Personality” in the app? Go to the Settings on the Home Screen (the little gear icon) or Click on the big Stuck On Earth logo in the upper right.

– Submit your trip for an Editor’s Pick! Note that we actually prefer the trip that you put together not to be your own photos so there is a better selection for other people visiting your city or a favorite spot… You can start building the trips now for submission! πŸ™‚

Below, thank you SOE!

Thanks to Stuck On Earth, I found this amazing place below… this is one of the cottages of Marie Antoinette just outside of Paris…

Country Home in French MeadowThis beautiful little country home sits in the meadows and gardens of Versailles. I've taken a few photos around this estate, and I really like this arch with the ivy. It made me want to have an arch with ivy at my own house! This was taken with the trusty old 14-24mm lens from Nikon. I tend to use this lens about 30% of the time I think. Most of the time nowadays, I use the 28-300mm with a few percentage points in there for the 50mm and 85mm prime.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.

The Walt Disney Theater on the Disney Wonder

What this looked like

Here’s what the photo below looked like when I shot it. I take these a lot with the Google Glass — I’ve also been working on a bunch of videos were are going to release for a secret new project! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – The Walt Disney Theater on the Disney Wonder

Here’s another new shot from the recent cruise up to Alaska. We went to this theater every night to see something different. The kids always had a good time and they put a ton of work into the shows. Maybe the kids’ favorite part was the snacks… I dunno… but I do know the snacks played no small role!

My Five Favorite New Features!

The newly upgraded SmugMug means different things to different kinds of people. Think about the gargantuan task they undertook — how can a company build a portfolio website in the modern age that appeals to all types of photographers in the world? Some people just take photos for fun and want to a chance to be able to sell them for a bit of profit to support their habit. Others are wedding photographers, some of which struggle to make bookings, and others of which are overloaded with clients and proofs. Some (like me) are landscape photographers and want a pretty place to show our work.

1) Simple customization

The beautiful templates that are available (even at launch!) are really impressive! The idea that you can just click and pick a theme is very powerful. And then, once you realize you can easily swap between themes, it all gets a little bit too intoxicating!

They even named a theme after my friend Thomas Hawk, who is also an avid user of the site. That theme plays well to photographers like Thomas who take a ton of photos and want to be able to share them easily and beautifully. Other themes will work better for portrait or wedding photographers. And landscape photographers, like me, have a whole host of themes to choose from.

If you are generally afraid of getting into the details and changing your customization, then this one-click scenario is the way to go. Oh, and once you choose a theme, you’ll probably want to pay attention to #3 below!

2) Complete Customization

The previous SmugMug was very very very very very difficult to tweak out designs. Now, there are smart drag-and-drop controls with individual menus that let you make adjustments.

I was able to go into a complete customization of the default SmugMug template and make my site look exactly like I wanted. Awesome! I never had to look at any code or php or script or any of that nonsense. In fact, I found the whole process to be very fun and interesting. It actually made me think very hard about EXACTLY HOW I wanted people to experience my work on the internet. This is very philosophical in a way, you see. I enjoyed the process, and I loved using the tools to realize that philosophy.

Now, you can take a default template (like in #1 above) and simply add a few new controls or navigation items. So you don’t have to start from scratch. Say you don’t like the way the menus are laid out in one of the basic templates — well that is easy enough to change. And then if you want to change the way the photos are displayed, then you are in luck there too. The controls are very simple and powerful.

How to customize SmugMug Video

I recorded a video below that shows more about customization in general and my specific customization.

3) Photo organization

I might be alone in thinking that it has always been a pain to re-organize photos after you’ve uploaded them to the web, but I don’t think so. I’ve never seen anyone do it right and slick until now. For some reason, the engineers at SmugMug were able to do something that not even Google or Flickr can do.

I have a lot of photos in my two albums, and I find that I’m constantly re-organizing them. The order is really important to me… I’m always getting new favorites in my top 25 or top 100, or I begin to dislike ones I once enjoyed. I’m indecisive like a woman, but that’s okay. Let’s just say I’m in touch with my feminine side.

Anyway, it’s very fun and fast to re-order my albums and move files around folders. It’s logical and snappy. It has also given me a great chance to get in there and clean up all the clutter that happened over the years.

HDR Photo

4) Help menus

When I occasionally have a question, I’ve been very impressed at the built-in help. It’s smart in the way it points you to the solution right within the UI. This is hard to explain, but you’ll know it when you see it.

SmugMug also has a bunch of Human Helpers — I think they call them Heroes — that are online waiting to help you out too. That’s nice… I doubt you could ask for human help on Flickr/Yahoo and get any kind of timely response (if at all!).

HDR Photo

5) Scalable for every device

Wow this is a big one. People now access the web using a huge variety of devices. It’s depressing, but you’d be shocked at how many people first experience your portfolio on a little phone. I know you don’t want it to be true, but, really, it is! And this percentage will just continue to grow.

We all (me included!) like to think that people experience our portfolio on a nice big monitor with huge resolution. Of course, that is how WE like to look at it, but the number of people that actually experience the portfolio site in this high-res web browser mode is not as high as we hope.

So, it is even more important that the portfolio site is responsive from every device, from dinky iPhones to tablets to huge monitors. The way the site bends around to every kind of device is super-impressive. There is a lot of secret-sauce happening, I can tell. At some point as the width shrinks to a mobile phone, for example, my navigational elements change from a horizontal arrangement to a vertical arrangement. This is cool! I bet there are a few people that might complain about this, but not me. It’s more important that people be able to navigate your site than it to maintain the original orientation and have an unreadable, tiny font.

Other Bits to consider

Well, read my full-on SmugMug Review for even more details. There are 50 other little tiny things that have also been improved – some of which I use and others that I do not. I could go on and on… like I love how my whole theme looks a certain way but the Buy Print button jumps out. I like how easy it was to make a customized page and put different gallery elements on it. Ack…I could go on and on. I’ll tie this up now with a little bow now by simply recommending that you pop over to SmugMug to and give it a try! πŸ™‚

Island in the Alaskan Fjord

And on YouKu

Did you know that there is a Chinese knock-off of YouTube called YouKu that is all the rage? I put up my Chinese video there too… you can see the nuttiness to the right. There’s NO TELLING what kind of crazy ads you’ll see before the video! Hehe

Daily Photo – Island in the Alaskan Fjord

When the ship was working its way through the fjords of Alaska, I was amazed at how many twists and turns there were! I was used the the fjords of New Zealand being fairly simple affairs. More or less straight shots. But these in Alaska are twisty beyond compare. Every time the ship made a big turn, I expected to be at the end, but it just opened up onto a new vista.

And even more strange, they had these wonderful islands scattered around the middle. I was not used to that either… but it looked so lovely.

If you look in the back, you can see a glacier… and in the foreground you can see the various bits of ice that have calved off…

Upcoming Speaking Engagements, Fujisan, and the spaceship

Upcoming Speaking Engagements

I’ll be in Auckland on Sunday to speak at the big NZIPP Event. I’m afraid that one is not open to the public, but maybe you can sneak in! I’ll also be at the event below, the huge Problogger event in Australia by Darren Rowse. I believe that event is Sold Out! But you should check their website and see if any more become available.

Half of Photography is just showing up

Here is a behind-the-scenes video I made while I was taking the photo below (well the 2nd half of the video!)…

Daily Photo – Fujisan and the spaceship

This was a fun evening exploring some temples around the outskirts of Mount Fuji. I have a feeling there are hundreds more places like this… I want to explore them all! πŸ™‚

Boxes Forever

Looking for good internet videos?

Sure… nothing wrong with a little internet-distraction right? Well whenever I need some new sure-thing videos, I go to the “Top for the Month” area of reddit. There’s all kinds of stuff in there too… you can add this to your internet wheelhouse! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Boxes Forever

I see scenes like this and it is both awesome and depressing. Everyone seems so cramped up. Maybe it’s not as bad as it looks… maybe the compression of the lens makes it seem worse than it is… like an ant colony… like bees in a hive.
