Testimonials

“Trey inspired me. Opened up a whole new world and made me believe that, hey, I can do this.” – Peter Lemieszewski, New York

“Best value per session of training I’ve ever received.” – Eddie Clark, TX

“Even if you think you know everything about HDR it is still worth to attend the course.” - Adam Jurgilewicz, Poland

“I think the course was a brilliant mix of HDR skills, PS skills, and a better approach to photography.” - Cliff Scott-Williams, Illinois

“Everyone should take this course. There’s plenty there for beginners and for ‘experts.’ I am an ‘old school’ photographer. I started 55 years ago. I loved learning these new techniques to use in my digital darkroom. It sure beats the old darkroom with all the chemicals equipment.” – Kaz Ochi, California

“A wonderful experience – challenging, educational and fulfilling. As the last session concluded I felt a sense of loss knowing we would not be visiting with Trey again in a “next session”. The experience was, at least to me, what many must have felt listening to the WW II “fireside chats” with Roosevelt. While I do not intend to copy Trey I do intend to take what he has shared and expand my photographic style in an added direction with HDR. My take-a-way has from the outset has been to be yourself, open your mind to new possibilities, be sensitive to what you may not have seen before and be creative in a way that is satisfying to me personally.” – Richard deGolian, Illinois

“I have been doing HDR for over 3 years and now I’m ready to go back and reprocess some of my favorites using the techniques Trey shared with us.” – Debi Beauregard, Texas

“I was initially uncertain as to whether to ‘attend’ this webinar. I had purchased Treys’ DVD and wondered why I should spend more money on this. I must say that I enjoyed the webinars even more than the DVD’s & was surprised in how much I learned. Thanks again for an excellent presentation. I did & will continue to enjoy and learn. It was money well spent!!!’ - Jon Barney, Virginia

“In addition to a tremendous leap forward in my HDR photography, he helped me redefine the focus of my photography. I would like to thank Trey for his generous, giving nature. His unselfish attitude about sharing and his confidence that sharing would not diminish his personal potential is extremely refreshing.” - Keith Bradshaw, California

“It was really amazing to get 9+ hours of Trey’s time to learn how he does what he does. Priceless.” – Jeanine Moore, Pennsylvania

“It was well organized, but not ‘slick.’ There was a feeling of being in a classroom with a great prof.” – Ken Parker, California

“This is the best photo editing webinar or course I have ever taken. Trey thank you so much for the info and for the encouragement to express my creativity in new ways.” – Tad Wade, Texas

“Trey has a magical way of teaching that is fairly non-traditional.” – Cliff Baise, Texas

The Lectures…

I think it is important for you to understand the “thinking process” as well as the “photography process”, so I spend the first part of every session talking about the thinking that goes into everything I do, from composition to critiques.

Andrea, who helped me out with the event, got a lot of positive feedback about these sessions. She sent me this little quote to include here: “While the training on photography and post-processing with Trey are inspiring, and are certain to take your photography to the next level, I think the lectures in the beginning of each session are even more valuable. To be able to hear from an artist, in his own words, the thought processes behind his work is a mind & eye-opening experience.”

                                      - Q&A – Lightroom and Bridge… He uses a LOT of keywords – does he just create those on the fly or use some other technique? Was the shuttle picture an HDR or single picture? Why doesn’t Trey just use the Dodge tool to lighten it up rather than mask in another scene? What camera does Trey recommend nikon D3X or D3S? Please keep in mind this is for an all around photographer and not just landscape, but also for stuff like weddings too? why does Trey use Bridge as part of his processing regime?
When you “combine” the layers, is it the same as to “flatten” the image? Why would noise reduction help hand holding, rather than “align images”? Why doesn’t he simply drag the photos into Photomatix? How many catalogues does Trey use in Lightroom? Does he create a new catalogue for each trip or location?

                                      Images Processed During Class

Below represents a small sampling of all the images that were processed during the class to give you an idea of the range.

Distant Rocks Off IbizaI gave the class 138 of my original RAW photos, right out of the camera. Their assignment was to begin working with these ones off Ibiza. I made this during class, so I wanted to go ahead and post it here. BTW, if you're having trouble logging into the Clubhouse to get the files, be sure to contact support@stuckincustoms.com. I took photos all throughout the sunset, before and after. I visited this spot 3 different times. Of the three times, this was one of the best. There was about a quarter-mile strip of beach and rock, all of which had good angles. So I kind of worked my way back and forth as the light changed... Read more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

The Prismatic CathedralIn the webinar, I gave people a small set of images for homework. This is the second of the two sets (the first I posted yesterday). I didn't mean for both to be from Spain, but I guess they are! Anyway, I thought it was kind of fun for people all over the world to be processing my images while I am processing them... kind of strange but cool. I will try to post things on a regular basis as we work on them together.Read more here at stuckincustoms.com.

The Silent Temple of ZhangjiajieHere's another photo that I worked on during last night's webinar class. It was a tough one! I was going through many different examples, and this was a good example of one of those mixed-light situations. It's so easy and wonderful to experience in person, but so difficult to capture otherwise.I took this in the middle of a serious trek in Zhangjiajie, deep in the southern part of China. It was one of the hardest single-day treks of my life. This part in the lowland forest was not too tough because it was relatively flat. There were little path problems here and there, but nothing too major. Most of the problems involved walking up and down these bitches. I probably should not call them that, but, honestly, when you are walking up on down them, it's one of the words that keeps popping into your mind.In a single day, I walked up and down those things twice, each time passing through these lowland forests... this was the calm before the storm of the ascent, and this little temple brought me some temporary peace.Read more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

The Chocolate ShoppeSome regulars know that I'm into gourmet chocolate. This is both good and bad because sometimes when I show up to events, people bring me chocolate from all over the world! And then, I get back to my hotel room, and I'm heavily laden with chocolate... and then the post-midnight haze sets in while I'm editing photos, and I start thinking, "Hmmm, I wonder what that 37% cocoa from Liberia tastes like..." And then it's a very slippery slope. Here's another that I processed the other evening while people looked on... This is a chocolate shop in London that I found by accident called the Rabot Estate. I bought a lot of stuff here, and it didn't last very long. I also had a very nice cup of drinking chocolate while flipping through some chocolate books in the back. I found out there is a chocolate resort somewhere in the Caribbean.. it's like a regular Caribbean resort that also happens to be on a cocoa plantation. The Barcelona AirportThis is another reason I like to get to airports early. Not only do I hate being rushed, but I like to take time to explore with my camera. Well, I guess that only is in the case where the airport happens to be particularly beautiful, like the one here in Barcelona. I always start out extremely rushed, because I picture security closing down on me from every angle. So, my first shot is usually rushed and not perfectly centered. Then, if the guards don't gang-tackle me like I'm streaking at Yankee Stadium, then I keep adjusting my position and the camera until things are more and more aligned and composed to my satisfaction. This one was even a little bit tilted, but I fixed that bit with the crop tool later in Photoshop (as people saw).Read more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

The Gentle Path to the Beyond - Trey RatcliffThe little train that carried me into Hakone started winding through misty mountains. The trees were thick and a fog was rolling in. I had a feeling that it would stay wet, moody, and fairly perfect. It had that heaviness that made you feel like it would remain like that for a few days, and it did. Before I get on train rides, I have a wonderful but dangerous habit of loading up with pastries. Train stations seem to have nice little selections of all sorts of foreign twists on the usual subjects. And, since I consider myself an explorer, I thought it would be good to get a TON of pastries and try them all. It's very nice... sitting there... looking out the train window at a new land... rain falling... eating pastries... (and I'm only a little ashamed to say that, upon arrival, my pastry bag was empty.)

The Gaudi Cheesecake FactoryI was stuck doing handheld shots all over this awesome Gaudi house because the PR staff would not let me use a tripod. They also said I was not allowed to post any photos of the house on my blog. I told them this was absolutely ridiculous and of course I would post photos on the blog. They said it was not ridiculous and I should really listen. I then said, "But everyone else is here taking photos and posting on Facebook and Flickr!, right?" And they said, "Oh, well, they shouldn't be doing that either."Anyway, I just don't deal well with that kind of insanity... I found this place to be quite beautiful, and I wanted to share it with you anyway. If you want to see it yourself, visit the Casa Bastilo in Barcelona. Oh, I know.... PR team at Gaudi... this is so terrible... #1 Travel Blog in the world showing a beautiful photo of your property and encouraging people to go... This really is as horrible as you imagined.Read more here at stuckincustoms.com.

Exploring the ChurchI like all the colorful votives. They make everything a bit more festive.... Cathedrals can be sort of melancholy places, so anything to liven things up a bit are a nice change of pace. I'm not saying we should go neon-signs or blinky-text on the church's website or anything crazy like that.... just a little somethin-somethin to spice things up a bit.And I do like that hallway quite a lot... it's got a nice M.C.Escher quality to it.- Trey RatcliffRead more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Grey LondonThe two greyest cities I have been to are London and Vancouver. But the architecture is so different in both. I prefer bright and colorful architecture, especially in those environs. Sometimes with grey/white/silver/black buildings, I feel like I'm in some futuristic dystopian techno movie... something like... oh Equilibrium. Have you all seen that one?Anyway, this is kind of a cool building, despite it's greyness! There is that greenish element in the glass (not sure what it is) that gives it those interesting aqua tones...- Trey RatcliffRead more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Nobody Needs Dramatic SheepI've posted two Iceland photos in a row! This is unlike me...yes, but I'm excited about Iceland. And, this is one of the photos I made in the video above.I think people that rarely see sheep are fascinated by sheep. This is very confusing to people that spend a lot of time around sheep. I'm sure people in Iceland find that outsiders find sheep WAY too interesting. But, to us outsiders, we see these wonderful little white puffs, milling around... the gentle way they drift over the soft turf like clouds on a green sky...If you zoom in tight on this one, you'll see there are actually three sheep there on the left... the one in the back is just being a little sheepish.-Trey RatcliffRead more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Is there anyway to gift the downloadable version to someone (birthday)?

Janet — the best way to gift it would be to buy it and download it… then you can give it to them on a Thumbdrive. That’s about the best way I can think to do it! :)

                                        Hey Trey!
Definitely hoping to get this tutorial pretty soon, looks amazing. One question though. Do you save your photos from Photomatix as JPGs, 8-bit TIFFs, or 16-bit TIFFs? I’m trying to figure out what the best format would be for me that saves enough image data to be able to manipulate it around a bit in Photoshop and at the smallest file size possible. I know that this is the eternal struggle for image formats but I’m just trying to find a good balance. Thanks!

Thanks for feedback. Yes this is on our list – ti make a bigger download with the other stuff. I wish we could go totally DVD-less. But the file size is a big problem for many people. Anyway, we are still working on a solution there.

Any update on a downloadable version with more of the extras on the DVDs included? I’d really like to get this but the DVD versions are a little out of my price range but the downloadable version is lacking so much that is on those versions. I agree with what Ken said up above, a downloadable version with everything included in a lower price range would definitely attract more sales.

It was great seeing you on Mostly Photo, hope that you’re a regular guest on the show.

                                        Hi!
I’m planning to buy this video but first have a couple of questions. Please forgive my ignorance on such things but how does this downloading of a video work? What I mean by that is, is it sent to me like an e-mail that I can open and read as much of at one time as I want? Eleven plus hours of video will take a while to learn. I’m assumeing that I can revisit any part as often as necessary. Is it something that I can keep for a long time and could be moved to a new computer when I get one? Please explain a little more.
                                        Thanks, Alex

Yes, it’s a good question… downloading video tutorials is still a new thing… so no dumb questions. We wanted to make the first download very small, so you immediately get a zip file link in an email. That zip file has the first 2 lessons. You can then sign up for the clubhouse or contact support to download the other 7 videos any time. Also, we have 24 hour human support to help you out, make sure everything is downloadeded, etc etc…

I was directed to a site to download the first two sessions, but am baffled by how to get to both the additional videos and the raw files. I have probably overlooked something obvious, but the clubhouse is mentioned, but I can’t see a link of how to get there, nor any other obvious download location.

You should include the photomatix software in the cost of the tutorial. Probably not photoshop but the other would be nice for the price of the full version.

                                        ~Kyle

Question on which version of Photomatix should I get ?
I am going to take your instruction course on how to do HDR, I am using a windows computer with Windows 7 and have Photoshop CS5. There are severial versions of Photomatix available, I want the one that will work best.
The stand alone or as a plug in for photoshop?
                                        Thanks,
                                        Rolland

                                        Hi,

I really love your HDR photos and I want to learn more about it. The bad thing is the course is a bit expensive for me (i’m vietnamese and you know, vietnamese income is very low). I did search on the net and there was a big deal on groupon that I could save up to 54% but the deal was already over. I wonder will there be any other big promotion like this so that I can save some money?

                                        Thanks Trey

Hey Trey or support. I just purchased the video tutorial and paypal brought up an email that hasn’t existed in over 5 years. I use ericesp@mac.com for everything. It was already charged to my account. Can you please send me the proper info.

I purchased the tutorial and the charge has posted, but so far no link. Please help. I also used paypal so it may have given an old email address.

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.

Question: I only use the Iphoto basic software for editing. Can I do HDR with this or do I need photoshop or something much more sophisticated. Thanks.

Tray, I own Nik’s HDR software. Using your information do you feel I can benefit from your tutorials or would it be too confusing trying to figure out the difference with Nik and photomatrix?

I am very interested in purchasing the HDR tutorial and just need a quick clarification. Do I need to have photomatix and if so is the light version okay or do I go with photomatix pro? I have photoshop Elements 8 already. Also I am getting a new camera any suggestions?

                                        Thanks,

I would like to take your course in January but first I am wondering if this process works in conjunction with Photoshop Elements 9? I have a Nikon D5000 camera of which I believe should work. So my question basically is, can I get the most from this course with my existing camera, photoshop elements 9 and the purchase of Photomax?

                                        Thanx

                                        Hi Tamina,

Elements will work fine. Its not what’s used in the videos, but with a little bit of translation it’ll work just fine.

Just bought the “Best Value – Total Package with Bonus!”! Really impressed with the videos and level of details. Would highly recommend for anyone remotely interested in producing quality HDR images.

I am still unable to access the clubhouse forums. Can a forum moderator please enable my account? I desperately need to check for some D7000 and Promote Control specific settings before I leave for my trip on Monday.
