Peter Lik – Your Thoughts?

High Dynamic Range Photo

Peter Takes Times Square

This is a weird one. Now, I don’t know Peter Lik, and I can’t figure out why in the world he would do this on his Facebook page I got a ton of tweets and emails about it. Anyway, it seems like a pretty sorry thing to do.

I don’t really understand. Peter’s photos are just fine on their own… he (and/or his team) should not need to do something like this. What do you think?

Also, see this video of Lik’s new TV show.

All my photos are Creative Commons Noncommercial. It means anyone can use them with proper credit, as long as it is not for commercial purposes. So, kind of two strikes here. No credit AND this is a commercial purpose. The Internet Knows All. For reference, the original New York City shot is here.

Update:
1) A rambunctious discussion started on Facebook, and then
2) Peter Lik’s team removed the post (a copy for reference), and then
3) A gentleman from their social media team apologized on our Facebook wall.

365 New Photos a Year

This is tough! A daily photo that I consider worthy! I’ve kept it going at a good 99% rate here for the past few years, but it takes a lot of work. I’m not gonna lie. This came up in the recent Mostly Photo show with Leo Laporte and Lisa Bettany (PS Leave comments there on YouTube for feedback). I guess people might think it is easy to do this every day… or maybe I am accidentally making it look easy. But, rest assured, it’s hard as hell.

Daily Photo – The Pier at the End of Times

Here is a good tip for you when it comes to sunsets. It also works if you have something in the center worthy of attention, which is commonly the case with sunsets.

When you use a wide-angle lens, like this 14-24, you will automagically get a feeling that everything is pointed to the middle. That is obvious, but you can “help the cause” and make the effect more pronounced by doing the following. If the there are repeating elements of roughly the same size (in this case: 1- slats of a dock and 2- blobs of clouds), then those elements will create leading lines to the horizon as they get logarithmically smaller towards the infinity point. In a sense, the slats only do part of the job, but the clouds do the rest of the job. Then, this allows you to have leading lines that take people in and out and back around the work.

So, one thing to look for when shooting with the wide angle lens is multiple objects of roughly the same shape. After that, you can try to set up so they repeat ever smaller towards the horizon.

This particular photo was taken in Ibiza one evening, just after the sun dipped into the Mediterranean.

NBC News in the Studio

High Dynamic Range Photo

Be sure to check out the NEW #10 effect, "Around 3 A.M..." - we've changed it completely so that it will suffuse all colors into a soft sepia and turn several existing colors into a velvet red.

We had an NBC news video crew led by Jim Swift over in the studio yesterday to talk about our app hitting the Top 10. He interviewed Mark and I for the news — btw, Mark is my clever developer at Lavacado. The segment should be out soon… and I’ll be sure to put up a link to the video here!

Jim Swift did a previous news report on HDR photography — you might enjoy that video… it shows my son and I out taking some photos together.

Big Video Release Sunday

I’ve put together a totally NEW kind of video for you. It’s kind of awesome. I think you’ll like it. So, be sure to come back Sunday morning for the unveiling. This begins the 3-day-countdown.

Daily Photo – The Last Sunset

It was one of those perfect sunsets where time went in slow motion. I was on high-alert, and kept everything flowing as I moved from location to location. It’s not easy to dance across rocks with the tripod fully extended, but it certainly is memorable!

I saw this dock early in the day, and I was secretly hoping that it might just point towards the sun as it passed the horizon. So I had this shot planned along with about 10 others. Some worked out and some didn’t. This is one of the ones that worked out.

Daily Photo – A Rainy and Romantic Night in Ibiza

Part of Ibiza is an old walled medieval town that is surrounded by layers of winding streets old shops intermixed with homes. A few streets away from the walls, some of the streets are full of pubs and quirky shops… I think it’s better to explore them at night than in the day — and especially so in the rain.

On this night, it was a little chilly and rainy, but that does not effect my camera. I’ve never had a problem because of rain or cold or heat or anything. It just works!

The rainy streets were full of colors and life. I saw this couple quickly walking under an umbrella so I took a quick one to capture the scene.

Exploring Medieval Ibiza

New Colormunki Review

I put up a new Colormunki Review here on the site. In short, it’s one of those devices that allows you to calibrate the color on your monitors/laptops/printer to ensure everything is consistent and pure.

Daily Photo – Exploring Medieval Ibiza

I did not know this prior to flying to the little island of Ibiza off the coast of Spain — but I was happy to discover that the old part of the city is an walled medieval town. Awesome! Whenever I see one of those, all I want to do is run around them, like I’m in a the latest Assassin’s Creed, except with a camera instead of a stiletto incognito.

The old part of the city has been turned into galleries, restaurants, and small boutique hotels. The textures and lights are warm and supple. I loved walking around and discovering little parts here and there — it was all especially nice because it was completely unexpected.

Photomatix 4 is out!

Of course, I edited the photo below with the new Photomatix 4. To read the Photomatix Review, which is pretty much the same as before except I added a few bits for Photomatix 4. I hope you enjoy it!

Edit: it’s now many years later, and I now use Aurora HDR Pro. Check it out – I worked with Macphun for over a year to build the ultimate HDR software!

Daily Photo – Sunset in Ibiza

Ibiza is a fabulous island off the coast of Spain that is the “in” destination for all the Euros that like to get trashed, party, dress in white, do medium-level-drugs, and stay on the beach without many clothes.

It’s also a great place for photography! We were having lunch one day and the waitress saw my D3S sitting on the table. It turns out that she was a photographer too, and we pulled out a map while she marked great places for photos on the map. That’s just what I like! Finding out all the secret places from the locals… and this was lucky in this case!

So we ventured out to this remote beach on the western side at sunset. It was pretty deserted while I snapped photos, except for a few of the ever-present women that prance around like they are in shampoo commercials all the time.

I saw this girl bouncing around and very happy about something, so I went over and said hello, introducing myself. She didn’t speak much English, but I managed to ask her if I could take a photo of her. She enthusiastically said yes, and I explained the sitch as we walked over to the water, mostly using interpretive dance to span the language gap. She was Italian and her name was Wendy. I think that is a strange name for an Italian, but I didn’t question it. Anyway, I asked her just to walk off into the ocean and I would take a photo. She did just that, and I grabbed this shot just as the sun was dipping below the horizon.
