Workshop Newsletter

Did you miss our newsletter about the workshop? It was a fun one that came with a lot of photos I took during the week. Below is a link to sign up for the newsletter!

Daily Photo – Crystal Mountain

Here’s a fun shot of part of our photography crew up on the mountain one evening taking photos. We had amazing weather once again (good karma maybe?), so everyone came away with incredible photos. This was a funny crowd because it was the first time at a workshop we’ve had everyone with DSLRs (usually half are mirrorless). Also, everyone had a Mac, which made the teaching bit even easier because I was able to use Aurora the whole time.

Preparing for a Night Ski

Quad Fun

I could never quite get the angle I wanted from a ground-based photo so I got the Phantom up in the air to get this shot. I think the perspective is much more interesting!

Here’s a video I made just after moving here. you can see some of this night skiing in a quick time-lapse segment.

Daily Photo – Preparing for a Night Ski

This is the surreal scene I see in my back yard in the summer. We back onto Coronet Peak here in the southern alps. Every winter for a few nights a week they turn on all the lights for night skiing. It’s such a strange sight at night to peer out the window and see an entire mountain lit up… it reminds me of jewels sparkling on the bottom of the ocean.

Coronet at Sunset

Night Skiing

I’ve lived here for almost five years and never gone night skiing! Shame on me… I suck. I gotta get out more! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Coronet at Sunset

This photo got mixed reactions when I put it online. Some people really hated it! Hey, that’s okay. I like it and think it’s kinda cool. I think it’s just such an unusual situation with artificially lit snow at sunrise. Not really a common scene!

Afternoon at The Hills

The Art Tour!

Here’s Part 2 of the Facebook Live art tour around Sir Michael’s home. He has one of my pieces hanging in the kitchen… that was from Part 1!

Daily Photo – Afternoon at The Hills

We took our workshop group out The Hills golf course in Arrowtown to take photos in the afternoon and sunset. Towards the end, we meandered over towards Sir Michael Hill’s house (The Lodge). Right before going inside for an art tour, we stopped at this little pond in his backyard. It’s always pretty back here, but the Autumn colors really pop.

Way High in the Mountains

Live Critiques

I did some critiques live on Facebook in our Special Group a week ago or so. It was fun… maybe I should do more?

Daily Photo – Way High in the Mountains

One morning I got up before sunrise to drive over to Over The Top Helicopters to get a little vertical for the day. What an amazing morning and what majestic light… Hey I would have been happy even if the light was lousy β€” always grateful for a fun helicopter-photo-ride!

Tree in the Wind

Speaking at Hassleblad at Photokina

If you’re in Germany for Photokina and want to come see me today, I’ll be speaking at the Hasselblad booth at 3 PM. Here’s a bunch of images I took with the H5D over a monthlong trip earlier this year. I’ll be talking about all these images today, telling stories, and more β€” join me! πŸ™‚

I first got into Hasselblad quite randomly via DJI . I didn’t know much about the cameras at the time, but my friends at DJI kept telling me how awesome they were… and it’s true – I get it now! I’m very interested in their latest camera (the mirrorless medium format). I’m looking forward to seeing what other lenses will be out for it.

This first image is Scarlett and Isabella in India with me… they loved those Indian dresses! We should have gotten them even more! πŸ™‚

New Hasselblad

The Hassy I REALLY want is THIS ONE – the X1D-50c. Looks like a hell of a machine… I wish there were more lenses for it though. But still, medium-format + mirrorless??? Sign me up!

Daily Photo – Tree in the Wind

This is one of the first photos I ever took with the Hasselblad H50. I didn’t even know what the heck I was doing, but it still turned out pretty well. And this is right out of the camera with no significant Lightroom adjustments. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit by saying I had no idea what was going on. I did figure out how to get it in Ap pri mode, set the ISO, and that sort of thing. I mean, I guess that’s all you really need to know, eh? In future photos, of course, I got more and more into the camera and really figured the thing out!

A Warm Hut on Coronet Peak

Aurora HDR 2017 for Windows

Here’s another photo I made with the new 2017 software… and, yes, I know every time I mention it I upset 80% of the audience that is on Windows. And yes, I PROMISE we are working on the Windows version now… and the good news it will have all the same features as the 2017 Mac version πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – A Warm Hut on Coronet Peal

Can you believe that I live 10 minutes from these amazing ski fields but I haven’t skied all winter? Well, actually I’m more of a snowboarder, but I haven’t done that either… been really busy with all kinds of crazy stuff going on. I find that if I have a spare day or two that I prefer to go out and take photos and experiment artistically. It seems a waste to live so close and not take advantage of it… like, for example, I went up there to get this photo but not to partake in other wintery activities!

Climbing the Remarkables

My neighbor has llamas

Ever since I’ve lived here, my neighbor has these llamas that are always walking around his yard. It’s so strange, and I never get used to seeing it. They are such strange looking animals… like something from No Man’s Sky!

Daily Photo – Climbing the Remarkables

Here’s what it looks like when you get to the top of the Remarkables and look back towards Queenstown. Beautiful, eh? It was almost impossible getting up here… I was so tired, and I had even taken a snowmobile most of the way up. Drudging up a mountain through knee deep snow much be one of the most taxing activities in the world!

Looking back towards Queenstown

Instagram Fun

I’ve been going a bit Plotagraph crazy over on Instagram lately. Pop over there and have a lookie!

Daily Photo – Looking back towards Queenstown

Here’s another shot from Social Media day from another perspective. This one is atop Mount Alfred looking back up the lake towards Queenstown. Maybe it gives some perspective of how huge this lake is. Another thing that you may notice is how pretty much no one lives along the lake! It shows how sparsely populated the south island of New Zealand actually is.

On top of the World in New Zealand

Fun Social Media Day

This is one of the photos from “International Social Media Day” β€” which was an absolute blast! πŸ™‚ It started with the dog derby then ended down at a sheep station… great to meet so many people! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – On top of the World in New Zealand

There are so many incredible mountains here in the southern alps around Queenstown. I think this one is Mount Alfred and it’s quite majestic! You can climb up it without too much trouble (well, there’s no cliffs or anything), but that may take you 3-4 hours. In this case, we decided to fly up here with Over the Top Helicopters!
