Panorama of an Autumn Tree Before Sunrise

My Dad’s Facebook Page

Hey, I know it’s kind of a weird thing when your dad dies, but, even more strange, is their Facebook page lives on. Here’s a link to my dad’s Facebook page. When I wrote my new book, I dedicated it to him in a rather strange manner… but I think he would have liked it.

Daily Photo – Panorama of an Autumn Tree Before Sunrise

On one of our morning photo walks, I saw this beautiful tree along the lakefront in Queenstown. I didn’t have the right lens, so I took a 2×2 panorama. I merged them together in Photoshop to create the final image. I’m pretty happy with it, but I honestly think it would be better if I had stayed here and wait for the sun to shine through the leaves.

Layers in Queenstown

This guy cracks me up too…

Daily Photo – Layers in Queenstown

During almost all our workshops, we spend the first morning walking along the foreshore in Queenstown and then into the gardens. This is the first time we had many layers of clouds and fog rolling in and out throughout the morning. I stopped on the beach to get this photo of all the layers stacked up together. One of the tips I often give around composition is to try to take more landscape shots in portrait orientation. There aren’t a lot of “rules” around orienting photos like this, so you can be much more experimental in how you choose to group the subject matter you are shooting.

Moody Morning from Coronet Peak

Toast of London Soundbooth

I don’t know if anyone will think this is as funny as I do! 🙂

Daily Photo – Moody Morning from Coronet Peak

Every day the weather is quite different for our workshops. We never have a set plan about where to go each morning for sunrise… I usually wake up about 6 AM and start checking all the weather sites to see where the clouds will be, possible rain, and all this sort of thing. There’s still a certain amount of guesswork and reading the tea leaves. On this morning, I wasn’t 100% sure that going to the top of Coronet Peak would work out, but it did!

Jack’s Point

Facebook Group

If you want to join the discussion about my new book, we have a Facebook Group active with interesting tidbits and updates.

Daily Photo – Jack’s Point

Here’s kind of a fun photo I took over near the lake and clubhouse at Jack’s Point in Queenstown, New Zealand. Usually, my landscape shots are quite wide and I rarely zoom in… but then I look at results like this and think I should do it more to add to that compression effect.

Queenstown Gardens in the Autumn

This guy is funny

Check out this vid on FB…

Daily Photo – Queenstown Gardens in the Autumn

When I look at these photos I took in Queenstown Gardens, it makes me wonder why I don’t walk around there every day, especially in the Autumn! It’s not actually that far from me… maybe 15 minutes. I guess one problem is parking. Parking in Queenstown is such a huge problem that I barely approach the CBD anymore… If I were in charge of counsel, I would subsidize Uber so that people could Uber around instead of leaving empty cars all over the city. There is nothing more inefficient than an empty car!

Beautiful Queenstown During the Workshop

Autumn 2020!

2020 seems like a long way away, eh? Remember the seasons are reversed down here in New Zealand, so now is a great time to schedule some time for yourself down here! Check out our workshops page for more info!

Daily Photo – Beautiful Queenstown During the Workshop

We had a great workshop week a few weeks ago in the Autumn season. This is one of my favorite places to take people. It’s sort of a lay-up really. Everyone comes away with amazing photos… you have to be absolutely terrible to get a bad photo of this scene. It’s great fun to help people along and they get so excited by their photos!

Thanks for Coming to the New York Talk!

Thanks to Max Stossel!

Max opened the show for us… he’s a special dude! Here’s a sample of what he does… hard to explain and easier to see!

More Editing from Jack’s Point

In today’s video, we get to see part two of some of the editing sessions from the photos I took at Jack’s Point. I’m not ecstatic about the way everything turned out, but you get to see everything anyway! 🙂

Daily Photo – Thanks for Coming to the New York Talk!

Thanks again to everyone that came out to the talk at the Downtown New York Marriott! That was a lot of fun… I’m glad the talk resonated with you – at least I think it did! One of my favorite parts is after the event when everyone comes over to say hi. People share the craziest secrets with me! haha… it’s great. I’m a great secret keeper!

Prepping for the Camino

Walking and Listening to Audiobooks

If you’re headed out on a walk, I highly recommend listening to audiobooks or podcasts! I have a list of some great books (all are great on audio too) here on my KIT.com for books!

Daily Photo – Prepping for the Camino

Before I went on that 200km hike in Spain, I figured I had better get in hiking shape! So I set out to do a week’s worth of 10-20km hikes. One day, I decided to walk from Kelvin Heights over to Jack’s Point near Queenstown, New Zealand. This one turned out to be a rather long hike… and this was the view on the way back to my truck. You can see Blueberry up there, just ahead, turning the corner… she might love the hikes even more than me!

Two Photos from Jack’s Point

Here are two photos from pretty much the exact same spot. I did two wildy different edits on them. I’m 100% sure I like the first one in the sequence better. It’s a good reminder of how much variance there can be in post-processing sessions.

Jack’s Point in Queenstown I went out with Eden Brackstone the other night to take some photos. After he decided to wade callously into this crystal clear water and ruin the placid reflection, I had about five minutes to contemplate life while the ripples settled down. And then I took this one!Man, I do love this Sony NEX-7. And no, Sony didn’t pay me to say that or give me my camera…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

And here’s another bonus photo from very close by…

Failed Supermoon Shot at Jack’s Point I made a big mistake when I decided to come here to get a photo of the super moon about a week ago! I had it all planned out, but then nothing went as planned. My Big Awesome Plan was to take a photo of the super moon and the mountains and get a reflection off the lake. Well, I was so close to the Remarkables here that the moon took about four hours after moonrise to get over them! It was pitch black by then… oh well. But, while waiting, the water calmed down nicely and I took this photo. This is an area called “Jack’s Point” — sort of a private home community and golf course. That’s the clubhouse there where you can get some great food too if you are in the area! - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Such an awesome area!

Jack’s Point 360 Behind the Scenes!

Here’s a fun video that shows a bit about my journey over to Jack’s Point here in Queenstown. You can see a little bit about what I was thinking and doing with my shots that evening. It’s NOT related to the photos above, however. Remember if this is your first 360 video, then you can grab the screen and look anywhere.
