Te Arai in the Evening Light

Daily Photo – Te Arai in the Evening Light

Here’s a photo from my road trip around the North Island of New Zealand. This is one of the coolest golf courses in the world called Tara Iti. It runs right along the beach and when the sun gets low, you get some pretty incredible shadows along the fairways. I like shooting on golf courses, but I don’t always like making it obvious it’s a golf course. I like the idea that it’s a beautiful place that’s just convenient for playing golf if you want to.

Wolf Attack

This is one of the many cool sculptures at The Hills country club in Arrowtown. The guy that owns it is Michael Hill, who also owns one of my prints and hangs it in his home here which is located on the golf course.

First Shot With the Hasselblad H5D

Daily Photo – First Shot With the Hasselblad H5D

This is not a new photo, but it’s one I took a number of years ago as soon as I got that Hasselblad. Nice, eh? I was still trying to figure out the camera, as the behavior was quite a bit different than my Sony. So, I spent a day traveling around the South Island here in New Zealand to try using the camera in a lot of different conditions. I took this over near Jack’s Point in Queenstown.

On the Way to Haast

Daily Photo – On the Way to Haast

How beautiful is the West Coast of New Zealand? It’s foggy and moody and full of mystique. I absolutely love it there. This makes me want to do more road trips all over the South Island… I’ll try to do a few a year! Next time, I think I want to get a little more drone action going because the views from up high are even more spectacular.

Incredible Mount Aspiring

Daily Photo – Incredible Mount Aspiring

I had an incredible day up with Aspiring Helicopters right before a trip to the USA. We first went up to an amazing cabin way up in the mountains for a wine and cheese party, then we took off again to circle around this mountain at sunset. It was like a dream! I put on my earphones underneath my heli-big-boy-earphones and listened to all kinds of strange music as we flew around. It was very dreamy!

Mitre Peak in Evening Light

Daily Photo – Mitre Peak in Evening Light

Here’s another one of the images from my 1000 Stories from 1000 Places NFT drop. It sold out in minutes, but they are now available to trade on OpenSea and X2Y2, etc so be sure to check them out.

Choppy made a stop at the airport in Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) to re-fuel the helicopter so we could keep the flight going longer. It was a super-long day of flying with nearly five hours in the air. I’m not sure how much fuel a helicopter can hold, but we were flying pretty hard so probably about three hours worth… By hard flying, we actually had two helicopters up, one equipped with an awesome externally mounted cinema camera, as we were flying from location to location working on a video project.

The Last Landing

Daily Photo – The Last Landing

I was with my friend Ben and his family… they were loving the trip around NZ for sure. I got this photo of Ben as he was walking along the beach… it was a windy and wild day and the waves were super intense. In fact, when we got back in the helicopter, a huge wave came and washed up under the chopper!

Imagine seeing this if you were one of the great sea explorers of yore!

This is the entrance to Milford Sound from the Tasman Sea. It would have been so amazing to come across this and wonder what it was like up inside the fjord. And then, the captain could just decide to sail up inside and land some boats on the shore. Maybe if they were a little hungry, they could even grab a few Moas and cook ‘em up. After a long sea voyage, nothing goes down smoother than a Moa.

Lockdown Walk

Daily Photo – Lockdown Walk

Every day during the lockdown in New Zealand, which I think only lasted about four weeks, I would go on an afternoon hike. I found myself drawn to this area again and again… these tiny little perfect pools of water… I actually took these with my mobile phone, although I don’t think most people would guess that in 100 years.

The Valleys on the Way to Milford Sound

There are approximately 4,000 places to stop on the drive from Te Anau to Milford, and this is one of them. It’s kind of a must-stop! The scene is crazy-powerful, and it changes throughout the day. I’ve noticed sometimes in the morning it is foggy and hard to see, but it’s still interesting even then. When planning car-trips in New Zealand, it’s best just to add a few extra hours into the experience!
