This is one of the images from my Fine Art collection which get fabricated in Germany by those Master Printers at Grieger… Recently I did a fun collection of NFTs where there were 6 that had a physical artwork attached. If you hold the NFT on a set date you get the physical print too. That claim period is now open for those who hold them and I can’t wait to see where they end up!
I’d been awake for two days. It all started the day before after I put the kids to bed. I got a Facebook message from Stefan Haworth. It turns out that he and Eden Brackstone were headed out for a little viewing of the big solar storm that was hitting the atmosphere.
Down thisaway, it’s called the Aurora Australis (not Borealis). Back then I’d never before seen an aurora (despite countless attempts in Iceland), I was ready to suit up!
And it turns out that one of the best places we saw them was right near here in Queenstown! We drove down along Lake Wakatipu until we were just past Wye Creek. I got out of the car, let my eyes adjust, then saw colored shafts of light shooting up through the edge of our snow-globe. It wasn’t like I expected! It’s…. hard to explain.
I took this photo while flying on a helicopter out to work on a photo project for a patron. That project took over a year or so to complete, so I ended up doing a lot of these flights. This one was in the middle of winter because I wanted to shoot the Earnslaw Burn in those conditions. My shot there that day came out kind of boring, maybe the most interesting was this one while I was on the way there!
On the middle day of the hike, the fog rolled in for the entire day so it was extra moody. I didn’t mind at all because it just makes for a different kind of photo. I felt like I was in the Scottish Highlands, even though I’ve never actually been to the Scottish Highlands! That’ll be fixed soon though!
This is the road to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi. I took this photo on a moody autumn morning when the road was empty and quiet, except for the occasional sheep grazing by the side. I was captivated by the contrast between the rugged peaks and the smooth surface of the road mixed with the vibrant colors of nature.
As the seasons change the grassy fields around Queenstown and Arrowtown transform into a rainbow of hues, from soft yellows to vibrant greens you can even spot some fiery oranges and reds among the blades. It’s like a magic carpet of colors that invites you to explore and capture every nuance with your camera.
As you drive into Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, you may well decide that the drive itself is better than the destination. And that’s saying a lot, believe me!
I think one of the best unofficial hikes is right around Monkey Creek here. It’s certainly worth parking your car and spending a few hours walking around the area. Even without your camera, it’s still a feast for the eyes.
The colors here go a little crazy when the clouds are in the sky! I’m not sure what it is… I think this very cold lake also does something to the air to make it a bit… thicker… or have more moisture in the air… or something!
This is another quadcopter shot over scenic Waiheke Island. Just seeing these photos makes me want to return! One kind of scary thing happened when I launched the quad here… we were all riding horses, and it spooked one of them. It jumped and shook off my friend David Maxwell. Luckily, he landed on his voluminous hair and all was fine!
Wandering through the fields one evening, the sunset wouldn’t quit! It just kept going and going… like a painting that changed every few minutes. And a few steps this way and that way would completely change the color situation on the bottom half of the photo. Honestly, there were not many bad combinations!
