Another day in Autumn means another day for a walk to a new place. I feel really lucky that all these places are just a short walk from home. One of my favorite things about New Zealand are all the various sorts of trees… and they all go through their Autumn shadings at slightly different times.
“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. What you are seeking is seeking you.” Here’s a fun collaboration I did with Jason Silva… a little inspiration for you! This is all my imagery along with a few pieces you may recognize from Burning Man. Enjoy! And you can subscribe to Jason’s channel, which I highly recommend.
Daily Photo – Lonely Road in Arrowtown
Arrowtown has some of the most beautiful Autumn trees in the world. When I look at these photos from previous Autumns, it makes me wish I got out there a lot more. Autumn is coming again in just a few months, so I’m getting excited… it may be a good excuse to get some new equipment! 🙂
These are the incredibly awesome wolves at The Hills country club. I met the artist in Beijing, and we had a fun tea and crackers together in his studio. He didn’t speak a lick of English and I didn’t speak a lick of Mandarin – but we had a few translators, so it kinda worked. Besides, we would show one another art and we would ooh and ahh at it all 🙂
Every day during the lockdown in New Zealand, which I think only lasted about four weeks, I would go on an afternoon hike. I found myself drawn to this area again and again… these tiny little perfect pools of water… I actually took these with my mobile phone, although I don’t think most people would guess that in 100 years.
Daily Photo – Lonely Clouds and Trees at the Hills
I think maybe photographers have a particularly fun life because perhaps we notice things more than other people. I mean, I see non-photographers notice interesting things too, but I am usually thinking, “Yeah, I saw that ages ago.” Haha… not in a dismissive way, but I think once you start taking photos you just notice a little bit more of everything.
When Derek came down to visit, we spent a lot of time rolling around in grass of various heights. On this particular day, we decided to find some grass that was just a little higher than Derek when he was supine. It was the horses over there that gave us this ingenious idea.
Every Autumn I try to go on at least 20-30 walks to areas where I have never visited here in Dalefield. This is the hilly area between Arrowtown and Queenstown and there are countless hidden gems. I’m still finding new places tucked in behind little hills here and there. Sure, sometimes I do a little bit of light trespassing, but people are really chill about that here.
The Hills has some of the most amazing art scattered all over the property. This one happens to be the work of the uber-talented Mark Hill. He has cool works scattered not just all over the coarse, but all over New Zealand. Even better, he’s a heck of a nice guy! I’m amazed at what his creative brain can come up with!
I talk about this show all the time… Here’s a trailer for Season 2 of one of my favorite comedies. I think this lady is a genius:
Daily Photo – Max Patte Art at the Hills
Max Patte is a very interesting artist from here in New Zealand. Any of you that have been to Wellington may have seen this same sculpture on the harbor. If you’re at The Hills, you’ll see the same piece in a slightly different setting. It’s amazing how much a setting can change the way you read a sculpture.
