This was a creation at Burning Man in 2017. I think it was called “Charon” and obviously it’s pretty cool at night… mesmerizing even. During the day though, and especially when silhouetted at sunset/sunrise it was almost as impressive.

Back in 2017 I took the Fuji X-T2 off to Burning Man. I was interested to play with it in general but the main reason is that those Fuji cameras are known to be pretty durable… and that is a real bonus out on the playa. Looking back through those images now, I’m super happy with how many of them turned out, some of my finest BM portraits for sure. Thanks Fuji 🙂
(And yes, the camera survived 🙂 )
As I headed into Burning Man back in 2017 I stopped not far from the camp to take a moment for myself. Things were starting to build in the distance but here it was just me, the dust and the wind as the early evening light rested on the distant hills.
I was reminded when looking at today’s photo that back in 2017 I took the Hasselblad X1D to Burning Man… I’m pretty careful with cameras out there, or at least I’ve worked out some techniques to minimise the damage over the years but it was still, in hindsight, probably not a smart move. Still, not the worst thing I ever did to a Hasselblad, that’s a story for another day!

I don’t remember what I was on when I took this photo but it definitely benefited from the higher perspective. I’m sure the rays were still cool to the people on the ground, but I think I probably got a bit more oomph overall. 🙂
It seems weird to think that at a gathering of 80,000 people you can find some time alone but at Burning Man anything is possible. Take this guy for example… just him and miles of desert. And me. But I swiftly exited into the dust like I was never there…
Every time I see this gramophone I think I should really look into building one for the garden… well… getting someone to build one for the garden. I’m sure the local sheep (and neighbours) would love me. I wonder just how far away you could hear it…
This was a really cool art installation at Burning Man 2019 by Matt Schultz and The Pier Group called The Head Maze. So much planning and work goes into these things, so I like to take a wander around as they are being constructed to see what it takes to put them together. It’s almost as cool to see as the finished products.
