This is the road I got stuck on after my 4-wheeler caught on fire. Now, of course, I had all my photography equipment with me… who wouldn’t take a whole host of photo equipment on a 4-wheeler joyride? I don’t know! I mean, you gotta be ready just in case the dang thing catches on fire!
This is one of the largest pieces I have ever made; the giant TIFF is about 21,000 pixels across. I shot it one cool and crisp morning at Glacier National Park in this crystal-clear lake that is fed by glacial runoff. It is comprised of 90 different photos that took a small eternity to mix into an epic HDR. I do huge prints for collectors around the world, and some are printed up to 3 meters across, so this is a technique I’ve come to enjoy.

My friend invited me out to his ranch in Montana. It’s quite remote and you can either ride a horse in, which takes a bit over an hour, or you can hike in. I always choose the hike even though it takes an extra 3 or 4 hours. There’s also more excitement because we sometimes see bears! Usually, about halfway through, the wagons that have been loaded with all our luggage come rumbling by, and that’s when I took this photo.

I took this one when I was out on a dinosaur dig with Jack Horner. One day we jumped on some quad bikes and just kind of rode off into the wild. I had my son Ethan on mine, and it was his first time. His mind was totally blown away! We took a break to jump off and take a photo just at the perfect time.

I was happy to be sitting on a few photos from Montana that I had yet to edit. Pulling a few different brackets from this magical place seemed like the perfect way to experiment with the different settings I alluded to above.

In the middle of the summer, I visited my friend’s ranch in Yellowstone. I stayed there for a bit over a week and it was an amazing trip! The ranch holds about 15 people, and every few days, a helicopter would arrive to bring more guests in and take other guests out. The horses on the ranch now are so used to it, they completely ignore the chopper and just chomp away on the grass.

I made it out to this amazing temple three mornings in a row to take photos. Each one was more beautiful than the last. One of my favorite bits was there were a bunch of young Cambodian boys running all over the place offering to bring me coffee. They have this coffee there that they mix with evaporated milk to make it extra creamy.
Today’s Podcast is a really fun walk with Fred Newman while we were staying at an awesome ranch in Montana. How do I describe this guy? He’s the sort of man that would not like any sort of description, I believe! But, in short, he’s one of the most amazing sound-effects and voice guys in the world. He’s very respected and you’ve probably heard his voice in everything from Doug to Men in Black to A Prairie Home Companion. From Wikipedia, regarding the latter, “In an audience favorite feature of the program, Keillor tells an apparently impromptu story that is funny because it requires Newman to strain to supply rapid-fire sound effects for unusual occurrences and obscure animals.”

One day we took a boat out to visit some floating markets on these winding rivers in Langkawai. After you get up high, you get a great perspective on how heavily forested (jungled? is that a word? Jungly?) this island is. It reminds me a lot of Vietnam or Cambodia in a way…
I have a slightly different workflow I’ve been toying with lately. It’s particular to me, so it may not apply to you, but here it is.
I have my desktop iMac here where I do most everything when I am home. It also is where my main library is hooked into. But I also have my Macbook, and I’ve been taking a ton of photos lately with my little RX100. Check the “Camera Recommendations” up there soon, as I may make it my entry-level pick! Anyway, I’ve made a special Library on my Macbook JUST for photos from that little device. They tend to be quicker shots, street shots, family shots, and the like. It seems better than commingling them with all the other huge photos that come out of the Sony A7 system.

This was a great trip! That’s my son there being held by Jack Horner… what a great guy! We went up to the badlands to spend a few days digging up dinosaurs with him… what an experience!

We all had a great few days at a remote ranch in Yellowstone at our mini Arcanum retreat! You can see Curtis there sitting beside her… there was a lot of photography with her and Jessica Lark, a lot of adventuring, a lot of good conversations, and amazing fun! As she and Curtis were leaving by wagon train, I grabbed this quick photo of her as she departed… there are a lot more photos from that week too; will share them soon!
