This place did something I had never seen before. They gave everyone a pretty big mirror you can carry around. You can kind of hold it at your waist and angle it up, so you can look down to see the ceiling instead of looking up. Genius!

See the four mirrors down there on the floor? I was gonna lay out like 50 of them, and I ran back to check my camera to see if they were centered before I added the others. Then, the security guard started yelling at me and rushing over! So I took this photo really fast. (You can see her black visage rapidly approaching on the left!)

Daily Photo – Venice Sinking into a Flood
Some nights the water comes up so high that the St. Mark’s square starts to flood. While unfortunate, it’s actually mega awesome for photography! Rene and I would swing by this square every single night to see if there was a flood…

This is a cute little side-street off one of the major thoroughfares. I noticed that many of the best canal-bending shots are just a little bit too wide for a normal shot. So you kind of have to go uber-wide with a bit of pano action.

Daily Photo – Another Late Night in Venice
I ended up sleeping pretty big chunks of the day because we were just hitting it so hard at night! It’s hard not to with scenery like this all over the place. At night they bring all the gondolas in to park, and they often make mysterious shapes and nice lines in the fading light.
Reminder to myself: Next time I see my friend Rene, I’m gonna record him on video telling the whole story about how he fell into the Venice canals at night, went completely underwater, and ruined all of his photo equipment. OMG… it’s such a funny sto
Daily Photo – In Venice Around Midnight
Getting waterside access like this in Venice is more rare than you might think. In most areas of Venice, you’re walking along the streets and not along the canal. When you see Venice from the water, of course this makes sense because all you see are buildings lined up right to the waterfront. For whatever reason, it took me a few days to figure this out! However, there are a few select spots where you can get out along the water for a bit. This is one of them, on the west side of the Rialto Bridge, just to the south.
Have you heard about that restaurant in London where you eat in total darkness? You can’t see a thing… the waiters are either blind or have IR goggles… not sure… but you really pay attention to what you put in your mouth, as you might ass

If I lived in Venice, I reckon I’d try to eat dinner in every restaurant by the canal at least every other night. What could be better than Italian food and wine by a magical and mysterious network of canals? Who could get tired of that? I’ve often semi-joked in speeches that my favorite times are when things are going into or out of my body… haha…. and, well, this is one of the best things into my body!

Hot Venice Tip
You’d think Venice is a city that has dozens (or hundreds) of rooftop bars and restaurants. Well, you’re as wrong as I was in thinking this! Darn! There’s the Gritti Palace, which is REALLY expensive and the concierge can be Quite Snobby in getting you a reservation. I have a WHOLE story about that with Rene! Or you can go here, to the top of the Hilton. It’s not too hard to get over there, as you can take the free Hilton ferry, but it’s kind of a drag. More b
Daily Photo – A View from the Hilton in Venice
This is the view if you end up going all the way to the Hilton. They have an awesome rooftop pool, but it closes before sunset! There’s no way to get out there, no matter how much you beg and plead, believe me. But if you move to the corner of the upstairs bar, you can in fact get this view. It looks pretty good, yes, I agree, but this photo would have been 10x better if I could have just gotten over to the pool area. Balderdash!

Daily Photo – Gondolas Lined Up at the End of the Day
Naturally, there are gondolas all over Venice, but the best place to shoot them is around the edge of St. Mark’s Square as the sun is setting. Almost all of the gondoliers bring their boats in here at the end of the day and dock them for the night. It’s one of the best times to come see them all lined up in processing.
