This place did something I had never seen before. They gave everyone a pretty big mirror you can carry around. You can kind of hold it at your waist and angle it up, so you can look down to see the ceiling instead of looking up. Genius!
Daily Photo – Inside the Guided Mirror Room
See the four mirrors down there on the floor? I was gonna lay out like 50 of them, and I ran back to check my camera to see if they were centered before I added the others. Then, the security guard started yelling at me and rushing over! So I took this photo really fast. (You can see her black visage rapidly approaching on the left!)
Here’s another photo of this really cool space that I posted a few months ago. That post also talks more about the art piece.
Daily Photo – The Keys That Bind Us All
I liked this place so much that I came back a second time just to take photos. This time I came back with Rene and we had no idea what we would see in the other pavilions Most of the time we were confused… but there was some awesome stuff!
Check our Photo Adventures page to find out more about the Venice event. Even if it’s full, be sure to get on the newsletter so you can find out about new stuff first
Daily Photo – Venice Sinking into a Flood
Some nights the water comes up so high that the St. Mark’s square starts to flood. While unfortunate, it’s actually mega awesome for photography! Rene and I would swing by this square every single night to see if there was a flood…
Also, it seems the Photo Walk has really spurred sales of the Trey Ratcliff Mega Pack! Thanks so much and glad you’re enjoying it! Don’t forget you can use the code TRUSA to save $300 at checkout!
Quick video from New York!
Just got to New York and visited a gallery in Soho that has a print hanging in it… see my Robot Daughter Scarlett and more! Haha… Getting ready for the big Photo Walk tomorrow.
Daily Photo – Ouissal in Venice
I was with my friend Simon almost every day in Venice. We had a truly great time all over the city, and we were often on these boats. His girlfriend Ouissal was with us too, and always looking mega awesome… I ended up getting about 100x more photos of her than Simon.
Here’s a photo I made with the built-in pano maker on the Sony. It’s very fast and easy! The only downside is that it doesn’t create a RAW file — just
Daily Photo – A Quick Pano from Venice
This is a cute little side-street off one of the major thoroughfares. I noticed that many of the best canal-bending shots are just a little bit too wide for a normal shot. So you kind of have to go uber-wide with a bit of pano action.
Here’s yours truly, there in that little boat off on a secret adventure. The new Kickstarter for the unknown product where we collaborated starts on the 22nd (one week away!!). To see the latest, pop over here!
AEP2
Don’t you love how all these software companies use such crazy acronyms, as if they expect everyone to understand them? AEP2 stands for Analog Efex Pro 2, and it’s the tool I used to make this shot. It’s a pretty fun tool, I must admit, even if it is a little sl
Daily Photo – Another Late Night in Venice
I ended up sleeping pretty big chunks of the day because we were just hitting it so hard at night! It’s hard not to with scenery like this all over the place. At night they bring all the gondolas in to park, and they often make mysterious shapes and nice lines in the fading light.
Reminder to myself: Next time I see my friend Rene, I’m gonna record him on video telling the whole story about how he fell into the Venice canals at night, went completely underwater, and ruined all of his photo equipment. OMG… it’s such a funny sto
Daily Photo – In Venice Around Midnight
Getting waterside access like this in Venice is more rare than you might think. In most areas of Venice, you’re walking along the streets and not along the canal. When you see Venice from the water, of course this makes sense because all you see are buildings lined up right to the waterfront. For whatever reason, it took me a few days to figure this out! However, there are a few select spots where you can get out along the water for a bit. This is one of them, on the west side of the Rialto Bridge, just to the south.
Have you heard about that restaurant in London where you eat in total darkness? You can’t see a thing… the waiters are either blind or have IR goggles… not sure… but you really pay attention to what you put in your mouth, as you might ass
Daily Photo – Dinner by the Canal in Venice
If I lived in Venice, I reckon I’d try to eat dinner in every restaurant by the canal at least every other night. What could be better than Italian food and wine by a magical and mysterious network of canals? Who could get tired of that? I’ve often semi-joked in speeches that my favorite times are when things are going into or out of my body… haha…. and, well, this is one of the best things into my body!
Photographers tell amazing stories of their mind-blowage!
Wow! Listen to these people talk what happened to them at www.TheArcanum.com – these are all Apprentices of Stephan Bollinger. BTW, we have a “rating system” like Uber and Stephan, like many Masters, hits it out of the park. He averages no less than a 5.0 rating! Here’s some of his Apprentices in this video: Pete Donohue , Jason Crader , Biju Oommen , Jake Randle , Maggi Woo , Daniela Vallant, Jeff Bond, Ryan Lundstrom , Jose Cabello , Paul McCranie , Mikhail Veter.
Hot Venice Tip
You’d think Venice is a city that has dozens (or hundreds) of rooftop bars and restaurants. Well, you’re as wrong as I was in thinking this! Darn! There’s the Gritti Palace, which is REALLY expensive and the concierge can be Quite Snobby in getting you a reservation. I have a WHOLE story about that with Rene! Or you can go here, to the top of the Hilton. It’s not too hard to get over there, as you can take the free Hilton ferry, but it’s kind of a drag. More b
Daily Photo – A View from the Hilton in Venice
This is the view if you end up going all the way to the Hilton. They have an awesome rooftop pool, but it closes before sunset! There’s no way to get out there, no matter how much you beg and plead, believe me. But if you move to the corner of the upstairs bar, you can in fact get this view. It looks pretty good, yes, I agree, but this photo would have been 10x better if I could have just gotten over to the pool area. Balderdash!
I was able to join the Google X team here in New Zealand not too long ago for the test launch of their Loon project. Here’s a video I made with Google Glass while there:
Daily Photo – Gondolas Lined Up at the End of the Day
Naturally, there are gondolas all over Venice, but the best place to shoot them is around the edge of St. Mark’s Square as the sun is setting. Almost all of the gondoliers bring their boats in here at the end of the day and dock them for the night. It’s one of the best times to come see them all lined up in processing.
