Burano – Stuck in Customs

Sunset in Burano

New HDR Video Tutorial!

I can’t wait to get this into your hands! I was reminded of it because below is one of the photos I edited in the tutorial… hope you love it. Sign up to hear first!

Daily Photo – Sunset in Burano

There wasn’t a single bad photo anywhere in the city. One tricky thing was finding the sun when it got quite low. None of the canals quite lined up along the light alley, so some of my favorite were when it was just barely above the rooflines, like this one. I processed this one earlier in the year, then I did it again for the tutorial and I liked the re-make better! 🙂

Infested with Humans

From Above

There are so many great quotes in this video below… today’s photo is inspired by one of them

Daily Photo – Infested with Humans

One day we took a boat from Venice to Burano. When we were almost there, we had the terrible and awesome idea to launch the quadcopter from the top of the boat! How fun! I knew Burano was pretty, but I didn’t think it would look this cool from above. I was surprised how “circular” the edge of the island was. Next time I go, I’d like to spend a few days here to explore, I think!

FB Live from Ben’s Home

Becoming an Artist LIVE – “Mixing it up with Ben de Haan” Live from Arthur’s Point, New Zealand at my good friend Ben’s home. We’re taking photos and mixing cocktails while talking about entrepreneurship and launching a new brand! Ask your questions below in the comments! Ben De Haan is with Cocktail Merchant – you’ll see what a master he is in this fun episode! 🙂

By request, here are the two cocktail recipes at the bottom. As for other things we mentioned…

The Great furniture designer Ed Cruikshank at http://www.cruikshank.co.nz/

The Great architects Justin Wright and Louise Wright at https://assembly.co.nz/

Cocktail #1: Sloe Gin Sour.

45ml Sipsmith Sloe Gin
30ml Black Robin Gin
15ml egg white
10ml sugar syrup

Assemble ingredients in a Boston shaker without ice and shake well. Add ice and shake again, double strain into a martini glass.

Cocktail #2: Espresso Martini

30ml Blue Duck Vodka
30ml Quick Brown Fox
15ml Espresso

Assemble ingredients in a Boston shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass.

Multiple Images?

As you can see from today’s picture, if I were to auto bracket with a bunch of different shots, there would be way too many differences for it to auto-align and de-ghost. So, one image is really okay. Whenever possible, I do try to get multiple images, but whenever I just do a single image, I’m still pretty happy with the results!

Daily Photo – A smooth ride home

We took this on the day our workshop went over to Burano for a mini photo-adventure over there. We came back at sunset and it was absolutely gorgeous! You can see it already. We had two boats… and we all just spent time taking photos of the Other Boat! This was an HDR made with a single RAW with Aurora HDR Pro. I quite like the way it came out!

Burano from Above

Being dumb on Snapchat

Visiting a glacier over the last 24 hours on Snapchat (treyratcliff) with ROBOT TREY.

Burano

Here’s a bit of trivia. So Venice is known for commerce. Nearby Murano (another island 15 minutes away) is known for glass-blowing. Then Burano (often mistaken for Murano, especially by me for years!) is known for making lace.

Daily Photo – Burano from Above

Much like yesterday, this is another cool town that is about an hour away from Venice. The only difference is that this one requires a water taxi to get here. On the way there, we launched the quad from the top of the boat (which is a 9/10 difficulty by the way) and flew over the water taxi to get this shot. What fun! Actually from up here, I was surprised to see how circular the town was. You can also see how much more colorful it is than Venice, which typically has more muted colors with pastel feels.

People Photos

Here’s some hot advice I have! I know many people that come here are also into landscape and travel photography. And when you travel, this is often the “default” mode… to take landscapy or travelly photos! For me, I have to kind of “get out” of that mode and switch to taking photos of people. When you get back home, you’ll find a very nice connection back to that sense of place if you have photos of the local people as well. So don’t forget to force yourself to get some people photos too! 🙂

Daily Photo – Through a window in Burano

Here’s a quick random photo I got in Burano, which is a magical place about a 45-minute boat ride from Venice. I was setting up for a “typical Trey shot” if there is such a thing, but then I heard the shutters open behind me and I saw this nice woman there. I spun my camera around for a quick shot!

Burano, Italy

New Under 60s video!

Newly released over at The Arcanum now you can sign up in under 60 seconds and also use Facebook login – cool! What is The Arcanum? It’s an amazing new way to learn Photography (other skills coming soon) with the tried & true Master & Apprentice system, but with a modern twist… think of it like Uber for creative brains! 🙂

Burano and Murano

These are two different places! I didn’t know this before I went. Murano is the place to go for all the glass blowing and that sort of thing. Burano is quite a bit further away, but as you can see, it’s more than worth it!

Daily Photo – Burano, Italy

I took SO many photos here. I was already completely overloaded while in Venice, but then I got here and started lighting it up even more. It was about 10x as colorful as Venice, which was already pretty insane!
