Bali Rice Fields

More angles on Rice Fields

Oh, trivia first! Do you know why there’s all that water in rice fields? I only just found this out! I thought, before, it was obviously because the rice needs lots of water! But then, when you think about it, the rice grains are actually pretty small, and there’s really no need for THAT much water. Well, here comes the reason: the water keeps the weeds from growing! Mind-blowing, eh?

If you click on the “Bali” category, you’ll see I have a few different rice field shots – I think some of the from the drone are my favorite.

Daily Photo – Bali Rice Fields

This was my first time ever to shoot these terraced rice fields. I saw a few in China, I guess, but they weren’t nearly this pretty. I thought shooting these would be easier than it was… I found a bit of difficulty in finding the best angles and compositions! I’ve heard some of the best rice fields and in the Philippines, so that’s definitely on my list!

Bali at Sunset

A Yoga Idea

I’ve got this crazy idea where I’m gonna go to Bali and learn how to become a yoga teacher. I don’t actually plan on teaching yoga, but I want to go through the multiple-week training. It sounds quite fun, actually. Plus, it’d be a great reason to get in shape… Anyway, I don’t know if I’ll actually do it, but I do fantasize about it a lot… seems awfully self-indulgent, but I’m not beyond that.

Daily Photo – Bali at Sunset

This photo still causes me a lot of heartache! It’s a “good” problem, technically, I suppose. The sunset was killer, as you can tell. I ended up taking about 200 photos. They were all just SLIGHTLY different from one another. Then when it came time to start processing them, I just couldn’t pick one. They all were really decent, and I was quite paralyzed. So then, I decided to edit like 10 of them. And they all came out a little different, but none stood out. I don’t know why this caused me so much angst, but I’m still feeling it now writing about it!

Soaring over Bali

Over the Tree Line

Looking at today’s photo just reminds me that I really need to do even more quadcopter flights where I get up over the tree line to see what is out there. Since we’re kind of stuck on the ground as humans, it’s really easy to kind of block out everything beyond the trees… I’m trying to think more like a bird nowadays, knowing my camera can go up and in pretty much any direction… still getting my head around this concept! 🙂

Daily Photo – Soaring over Bali

How beautiful is Bali? I took a drive out one day to visit some rice fields and other amazing spots. Halfway in the middle, I asked to pull over so I could do a random drone flight. I could not see any of the volcanoes from the road, but I had a feeling they were out there. You can imagine how surprised I was when I got up and saw these beautiful features on the horizon. I should have done more flights, looking back!

High Above Amazing Bali

Bali Workshop?

I was planning on getting back to Bali to do a workshop, but I just haven’t had the time! Don’t worry — it’s still on the list! 🙂

Daily Photo – High Above Amazing Bali

Both Ritz-Carlton Resorts in Bali have amazing top-down views when you enter the resort. Jaw-dropping might be the best way to say it! 🙂 This is the Nusa Dua location, where I've stayed multiple times. This was also the location of one of our community service efforts where we brought in a nice group of orphaned children and we spent the afternoon and evening taking photos together. What a great group of kids!

Exploring in Bali at night

Aurora HDR 2017

Don’t have Aurora HDR 2017 yet? Grab it now! I use it to process all my photos. And no worries, yes yes, we are working on the Windows version right now! 🙂

Daily Photo – Exploring in Bali at night

I was at one of the two Ritz-Carlton hotels in Bali (this is the Mandapa Reserve) and exploring at night as usual. Once you get into HDR, you begin to take special notice of “topics” that would look particularly good in that context. I notice that I've become much more sensitive to texture, color, and relative saturation of nearby colors. Even when just walking by a scene, like this one, I make a note to come back and get a photo of it later!

A Panorama Sunset in Bali

Speaking of New Mobile Phones

I’m pretty excited about the new phone from Google. I’ve been using the Nexus Android for years, and this looks like a perfect upgrade. I’ve also been using Google Fi, so this looks to integrate perfectly with it.

Daily Photo – A Panorama Sunset in Bali

Panoramas are so much work! I watch everyone make them on their mobile phones and get so jealous. Not only does it take a long time with my Sony to capture all the images, but the post-processing is the real time sink. Don't get me wrong… I enjoy it and end up getting 50x the resolution, but it's still quite a trial!

Daily Photo – The Entry to Paradise

Here's a side-view of the entrance to the Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Bali. The architecture here was so beautiful that there were almost no bad photos of it. I returned here again and again to take photos in different angles and different light. The weather was always perfect. It was all open air and gentle breezes would swirl about… taking photos here (and everything else!) was always calming and relaxing.

A Massive Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Bali

Stranger Things

Have you seen this new series on Netflix? If not, I recommend it! It’s based in 1983 and is sort of a fantastical show that reminds me a lot of Twin Peaks. It’s not as quirky and surreal as that, but it has many of the same elements. Anyway, yet another great Netflix show!

Daily Photo – A Massive Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Bali

There are two Ritz-Carlton hotels in Bali and I was lucky enough to stay in both. If you're gonna spend a week there, I also recommend trying both! This one is from “Manadapa,” which is one of their reserve properties. This massive structure you see here is where the “lobby” is. It's all open air, as the weather is always warm and temperate. I can't imagine how long this must have taken to build. I met the architect one day at tea and he probably got sick of me gushing over not only the overall design but also all the little details.

Fields from Above

Preparing for Battle

I notice most of the time when I go out to take photos, it’s not a hotel-room 72 degrees F! So I am either bundling up or preparing for a sweat-lodge. There’s no in between… like here in Bali, for example, I just prepared for a whole day of sweating. It’s good to bring an extra towel, as Douglas Adams warned us.

Daily Photo – Fields from Above

My whole life I've seen photos of rice fields and always wanted to see them in this terraced formation. I did see a few in China, but they were not even impressive enough for a photo. They were a bit dull, and not terraced, you know? But then I got to Bali and was able to see many of them… just as amazing as I have imagined. I understand the ones in the Philipines are even better, so I hope to see those some day too.

Sunset in Bali

The Next Morning in Bali

Here’s a FB Live thing I did while in Bali… this was the next morning!

Daily Photo – Sunset in Bali

We went out on a little photo excursion one afternoon and evening. It was great fun! We started by visiting a few different beaches then ended up at this magical place in the evening. There were no bad pictures from any angle. It was a shame I only got to go here one night… but driving around Bali and exploring was a great experience. I look forward to going back some day and seeing more! 🙂
