Daily Photo – Walking to the Summer Palace in Beijing

Here’s one of the many ornate bridges I saw while walking around the many lakes at the Summer Palace. I decided to do a treatment with the new Analog Efex Pro 2 from Nik/Google. The original photo was pretty good, but it felt a little boring or something. The texture and the feel was not right… so I spent a fun 15 minutes in AEP2 to make it the right kind of interesting!

The New Arcanum Trailer and the Sun Drifts Away Into Time

The New Arcanum Trailer!

Here it is! We also just put this up on The Arcanum website. I know thousands and thousands of you have applied and are still waiting in the Neverending Orphanage of Lost and Forgotten Souls. You drift about like wayward wraiths, waiting for a Master to choose you, plucking you out of your perennial purgatory.

But we are going slow on purpose and hand-choosing Masters and training them up on the culture and the leveling system. We currently have between 20 and 30 Masters, each of which are averaging about 17 Apprentices each. We could amp it up at any time, but we’re trying to do this right. No one has ever built a system like this, so the whole team is keeping this as organic and special as possible. We’ll hit scale soon enough, so we really appreciate your patience! 🙂

Here’s one of the newest blog posts from one of our Apprentices, Tricia Booker!

Heroes of The Arcanum – Volunteers Creating a Magical Experience for You!

Check out the Heroes Of The Arcanum! I’m so happy to have these amazing people behind the scenes volunteering to make the whole Arcanum experience even more rewarding.

Thank you Tania Court, Tiff Gilleland, Tanya Wallis, Chris Thompson, and Daniel Levy so much! You’ll get to know these five better over time… Pete, Curtis, and I are very thankful for yalls, as is everyone else in The Arcanum!

Daily Photo – The Sun Drifts Away Into Time

Southern China! It’s so wild and untouched! Well that’s not totally true. It’s mostly untouched. When you do find the occasional town, they can be a bit third-worldy in terms of trash and architectural squalor. They are not terrible and dangerous, just a bit, well, rough-looking. There are quaint parts that are authentic and charming, but often times there is too much detritus strewn about to make you feel totally comfortable. At least, this is the way it is to me. But I like escaping kind of far away from those places, up into hills like this where everything is back in its natural and beautiful state.

Daily Photo – Monk on a Trike

I visited this wonderful monastery and temple in Beijing. I arrived there just as they were getting a delivery. Monks would ride these specialized trikes back and forth to ferry the goods back to their living area. You’ll never guess what is under that blanket. And I’m not kidding. About 100 Red Bulls!

The Summer Palace and New Gear Page!

Updated Camera Gear Pages

Since Sony has now kinda renamed all their NEX stuff to Sony Alpha stuff, we’ve redone the “Trey’s Gear” page here on the site with Good, Better, and Best. I know it looks like I’m a total Sony shill, but they actually don’t pay me to say any of that… I love my A7r so much that I even bought a second one! Hehe… anyway. Related to that, btw, is the Leica Lens Buying Guide if you want to equip your new Sony with some Leica lenses. Be sure to look at the R-lenses there too — they are quite affordable!

Also new on there is the DJI Phantom Review, among other things.

Denver PhotoWalk Prizes

Sorry for being a bit recalcitrant in the Denver PhotoWalk Grand Prize winners! I will get on that soon – I will not forget. I promise! :

Daily Photo – The Summer Palace

This is my third time to visit The Summer Palace in Beijing and the first time I’ve ever gotten a photo I liked! This is one of those places where you’re gonna walk for many many miles if you want to see all the angles. This spot was about 4 miles from where I entered, and the palace was closing soon. Luckily, I found another exit so I didn’t have to walk back all that way. Honestly, I could have used the exercise, but, also, honestly, I didn’t really want to do it.

Daily Photo – Wondering Girl in the Rain

It’s hard to say which of the photos I edit in the Lightroom Tutorial are my favorite, but this is certainly one of them. You can see the original above, and it’s not all that different, but there is something very nice and magical that is transformed when the colors are moved about a little bit… Maybe you can see what I mean! 🙂

This girl was walking around in the wet streets of Yangshao, China

Police Protection in China and a new Travel Podcast Interview

New Podcast on the Daily Travel Podcast

Nathaniel from the Daily Travel Podcast interviewed me recently. I’ll put the soundcloud player embed below. It was a fun discussion – thanks Nathaniel!

From their website:

What We Cover:

— How travel inspired Trey into a creative life of travel, photography, and creativity.
— How taking a creative approach towards your travel photography can help you get more from your travel experience, enhance your memories of the places you’ve been, better share the “feeling” of the places you’ve been, and expose and connect others to the world.
— HDR photography, what it is and why Trey went looking for it before it went mainstream.
— How the human race is becoming more and more connected, like a super organism and how travel relates to this.

Getting ready for the Wedding

Cheesy Wedding Photos

Do you know of any sites with crazy wedding photos? I’ve seen some crazy Russian ones… here, let me try to find it. Here’s a crazy one. Oh, and here’s another!

Daily Photo – Getting ready for the Wedding

We were on the outskirts of the Forbidden City then went into a temple area and there were about 20 couples taking their wedding photos. It was so funny to see everyone posing and all the photographers taking photos. They were all trying to find angles where they wouldn’t see the other couples. The men wore the craziest tuxedos, but the girls mostly had on really pretty dresses. I took this one while she was moving from one position to the next.

A fisherman from a thousand years ago

47 Ronin

Did any of you see 47 Ronin? Some of the scenes in that movie are just unbelievable… in fact, I think that scene when they go to the slaver ships is one of the coolest backgrounds I’ve ever seen in a movie! Here’s a still from it. It didn’t turn out to be the greatest movie ever made or anything… but some of the scenes in there are really beautiful!

Daily Photo – A fisherman from a thousand years ago

There are thousands of little rivers that flow through these huge karst mountains. Fisherman have been around here forever, and I like this idea that this scene could have happened almost any time in history. There are fewer fishermen nowadays, but they can still be seen. We were with some locals that knew some of the fisherman, so we were able to go out on another boat to find them… He looked so cool from a distance as we were approaching, so I tried to grab the photo in that style.

Little Girl Guarding a Store in Beijing

Leica Lens Buying Guide

Thanks for coming to check out the Leica Lens Buying Guide on the site. I made it as part of the Sony A7r review. I mention it now because this photo was taken with a Leica lens. And no, I’m not sponsored by Leica. I wish!

Daily Photo – Little Girl Guarding a Store in Beijing

I walked down a side street near an area called HoHai in Beijing to find all kinds of little treasures. This street was perfect. Dozens of tiny shops, from antiques to chocolates to perfumes to books to everything in between. There were many colors and outfits. From inside one of the little stores, this tiny girl walked out. She must have been the daughter of the proprietor. She leaned on the door and looked up and down the street, in her own zone.
