Sydney – Page 3 – Stuck in Customs

Director of Chaos

Inside the hotel

I’ve stayed at this place many times… love it there! Here’s a picture of my room from my first trip there.

The QT Sydney This was my room at the QT Sydney from a few weeks ago… you can see my bags and stuff… probably should have moved them for the picture. Anyway, one of the Coolest things about this hotel is the elevators! They scan to see how many people are inside. If there is just one, then it plays lonely music, like Elvis singing, “Are you lonely tonight?” And then when there are two people, like, embarassingly when I was in there with Tom, it started playing, “Just the two of us.” And when there are like five or more people in there, it starts playing party music like Lady Gaga… anyway, it’s a trip!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Daily Photo – Director of Chaos

I saw this gal outside of the QT Hotel in Sydney. She would help us with our bags and cars every day… It didn’t strike me until we had been there a few days to actually take her photo! I did this one with the A7r II with the Leica 35mm f/1.4 lens. I love the effect it has. I asked online if anyone actually knew this gal there to get her the photo. Someone responded and said her official role there was “Director of Chaos” which sounds like a pretty cool and fitting title!

Sailing in the Sydney Harbour

Flying above the Harbour

Here’s the 2nd flight we did over the yacht that ends with the great Maxwell doing a backflip off the yacht! 🙂

Daily Photo – Sailing in the Sydney Harbour

What an amazing four days we had in Sydney. Thanks again to everyone that came out for the two events, and I am glad people enjoyed the workshop! On the final day, we went on an epic yacht cruise around the harbor and the weather was incredible. At one point, we were trolling around looking for a place for lunch, and I saw a sailboat back against the Opera House. The lines and curves and colors around were so vibrationally consistent that I asked the Great Captian Luke to maneuver around to get this position. And look at the sky! What drama… we thought it was going to rain, but it never did.

Sydney Bound for a Workshop!

Things are hottin’ up!

I’m coming to Sydney, Australia! Join me and find out more!

What’s going on? Well, I’m gonna do a full-day workshop and it’ll be quite unique. The day is designed to challenge both sides of your brain. For the technie side, we’ll spend plenty of time playing with tools like Lightroom, Aurora HDR Pro, Photoshop, Photomatix and more. I’ll even screencapture the whole enchilada so that so you can download later… we’ve designed this as a “lean back” experience so you can see the way I create images, the way I move through my workflow, and my organic process to rearrange the light to communicate a story.

For the right side of your brain, we’ll spend the other half of the time talking about creativity and how to unlock bits of your mind that might be stuck. You’ll see this through the creation of images, stories, and how to get back into that elusive creative flow. The key is to get to know the tools and then let your free mind float on top of them.

What do you get? I wanted to put together a package that you can download before the workshop with all kinds of unique goodies. First, you get a Lightroom Library full of all my RAW files we’ll be working on together. Second, you get a welcome video that lays out three challenges for you to work on before the event. It’s optional, you know… I won’t be checking homework! Third, you get access to this new thing I made called “Trey’s Creative Survival Kit,” a collection of resources outside of the photography world to inspire and counterintuitively unlock creative energy sources inside of you.

I’m looking forward to meeting you in person, my Internet friends! And if I already met you from our Sydney Photowalk, I look forward to hanging out with you again with a whole new bag o’ tricks! 🙂

A Few Favorite Photos from Sydney!

What a great city… I can’t wait to go snap-happy! 🙂 And this time, it will be during Vivid Sydney!

Bridge Party in Sydney

The Amazing Bridge in Sydney I think I took this during the Sydney photowalk – I am not sure! But those clouds seem very familiar. I took So Many Photos in Sydney… thousands… and I’ve processed hundreds so far. But I just can’t remember exactly when I took this one! Maybe someone from Sydney can confirm that I took this that evening.I really wanted to get up there on the bridge, but they don’t let you take your camera, which is a real bummer. I wish I could get special permission some time. Whoever can get me special permission can go with me – that would be a blast! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Sydney Glows at Sunset During the Sydney photowalk, we ended up with some nice skies! I always love a bit of drama in the skies… makes everything a bit more exciting and epic I think. And just after the sun set, there were a few interesting splashes of color in the sky to break it up.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Downtown Sydney from the Rocks The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney, and it’s down by the harbour. I have to make sure I get the “u” in there to appease local sensitivities. Anyway, it’s a cool area full of a lot of old-world charm. Now there are a lot of restaurants, bars, and little hotels that are sprinkled around the area.I took this one from the top of a 3-story salsa bar. I didn’t even really go into the bar, except for the way to find the top of it! I looked quite strange walking around the salsa dancefloor to get to the other side, dancing with my tripod!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

The Skies of Sydney Sydney? Check. Sunset? Check. Easy photo? Check!Man, this was such a lay up… I can’t claim much credit for it. I just kinda walked up and it was like this. Good sunset shots are not always easy, but this one was… I admit it! :) Now, it was made a bit easier with post-processing through Photomatix, but I kind of take that for granted now.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Daily Photo – Daily Duck!

Here’s one of my favorite photos from Sydney. It’s also infamous because it’s the same one their local newspaper put on the front page without my permission. Bad newspaper! Bad! 🙂

(it’s okay we settled all is cool again)

Daily Photo – Bridge Party in Sydney

This was a crazy-long day of hiking with my friend Tom. I think we must have walked 15 km that day with all our heavy camera stuff! Towards the end of the night, when we finally got under the famous Sydney bridge, I barely had enough energy to take this photo, but I’m glad I did!

Sydney Through the Glass

Your Favorite Science YouTube Videos?

I don’t know if you’ve seen my YouTube Playlists, but I’ve got a few different ones. I have kind of “photography” ones, but I also have Funny Playlists, Science Playlists, etc etc. What are your favorite science videos, I need to fill mine up with some more! I just added a cool one of a gravity demonstration that I saw on reddit… But I find that using playlists is a good way to remember my favorite YouTube videos.

Daily Photo – Sydney Through the Glass

Here I am in the Customs House visiting a beautiful restaurant. I liked the view from the balcony, but I liked it even better from indoors! The way the strange light bounced off the glass made my kinda happy and confused, so I though t it was a much more interesting shot.

Queenstown from Above

I did it! My first solo flight in a paraglider was successful! I also got a video of the thing I will share soon, but here is a quick shot I just took from the air over Queenstown with Google Glass:

Daily Photo – Sydney from Above

I love these models of cities! I should make it a point to visit models of cities whenever I am in the city itself. It’s often impressive and gives you a very nice feel for the organism of the whole city. This one was in Sydney, and it was Alexia Sinclair who first showed me this awesome place! She had an exhibit here about a year prior, and it was a spectacular venue for it!

Awesome Ship in Sydney Harbor and Big Event at Google HQ in Tokyo!

Join me in Tokyo at the Google HQ for a free event!

On Friday April 12 at 4 PM, come to my talk and/or join me just afterwards for the meet up! To join me, just fill out this Google Form! I look forward to meeting you there… this will be a fun event and I’ll be talking about all new stuff.

The Google offices are located at 6-10-1 Roppongi, Minato, Tokyo. The building is called Roppongi Hills Mori Tower and the Google reception is on the 26th floor.

Extraordinary Vision Magazine

There is a free iPad magazine called Extraordinary Vision that has featured several writeups about the New Zealand event by a few of the photographers that attended the event. This is highly recommended – I think you will enjoy their photos and what they have to say!

Daily Photo – Awesome Ship in Sydney Harbor

Tom and I walked down to the Rocks one night, which is one of the oldest parts of the Sydney Harbor. I was wondering, actually, if I should spell it “harbour” now that I live down thisaway. I do like the British spellings of things… they seem so much more… well, British and sophisticated. I guess I’ll just stick with “harbor” – I don’t want people thinking I’ve turned native so quickly.

Anyway, the ship was moving a lot in the sea, so I had my ISO up pretty high to compensate. Usually, what I’ll do in this situation is take a normal set of brackets at a low ISO to get a nice HDR shot, and then I’ll take another at high ISO to freeze the movement… and then I do my best to Frankenstein it all together.

Tom in Sydney

Another shout out to the QT Sydney

Thanks again to the QT Sydney (a photo of my room) for hosting Tom and I! Stephen Howard did a great job showing us around and getting us here into the State Theater where we took the photo below.

Daily Photo – Tom in Sydney

That’s Tom Anderson there (the MySpace Tom). We had a very fun time running around Australia together, and especially here in the State Theater. It is an amazing place! The entryway, as you can see, is insanely ornate. And then once you enter, you go through one hall to the next, each as grand as the previous one.

I’d love to have an event here one night… I don’t know what I would do… maybe just bring in a bunch of people and we can all post-process all night together! 🙂 That sounds lame but also kinda awesome.
