Driving Around The Hills

More Max Patte work

If you’re ever in Wellington, be sure to visit Weta Studios and take a tour. It’s absolutely unbelievable and you can see some of his incredible work he did for all the Weta movies.

Daily Photo – Driving Around The Hills

Here’s another one of Max Patte’s sculptures that you see when driving around The Hills golf course. I must say that I spend more time taking photos on the golf course than playing golf! Sometimes I just go get a golf cart and don’t even put on my clubs… I’m sure people just think I am nutty!

Fire Dancing at the First Ever New Zealand Workshop

New Zealand Photo Workshops

Be sure to keep an eye on the Workshops page to see when one or more magically appear! :)

Daily Photo – Fire Dancing at the First Ever New Zealand Workshop

For the first one ever, we decided to get fire dancers out to my house. It was so fun! One problem is we did this on the very first night, and shooting fire dancers is a bit difficult! Now, whenever we do the big dinner at my house, it is on the last night of the event. By that point, everyone is super-duper relaxed and the parties usually get delightfully out of control!

Daily Photo – Bridge Party in Sydney

This was a crazy-long day of hiking with my friend Tom. I think we must have walked 15 km that day with all our heavy camera stuff! Towards the end of the night, when we finally got under the famous Sydney bridge, I barely had enough energy to take this photo, but I’m glad I did!

Even though I absolutely love these kind of clouds, what I also really dig is the color of these long grasses. You only get this color at this time of year, and only when you have direct sunlight. It’s amazing how much direct sunlight affects the colors… making them all glow like translucent jewels.

Outside the Robot Restaurant in Tokyo

When Robots Take Over

I hope they all are designed by the Japanese and have the voice & humor of GlaDOS. Well, without the natural instinct to kill.

Daily Photo – Outside the Robot Restaurant in Tokyo

This is a must-visit place if you go to Tokyo. It’s completely insane. They have robots all over the place and tons of scantily-clad Japanese girls. What could be better? The music and the display they all put on together is completely overwhelming! They serve you food in an old-school TV-Dinner from the 1970’s while you watch the proceedings. I’m still not sure what happened that night, but it was completely INSANE. You gotta go.

Approaching the Korean Prison in Queenstown

Self-Auditory-injury Question

Let’s just say I want to live on the side of danger… I never find my earphones QUITE loud enough. I hear a good song and I don’t mind damaging myself a bit with it, know what I mean? I’ve tried many earphones… etc etc, but I want a somewhat illegal booster. I feel like all the major earphone manufacturers take things a few levels BELOW what is safe. I’d rather listen on the edge… know what I mean? Any suggestions?

Daily Photo – Approaching the Korean Prison in Queenstown

It’s remarkable how big Deer Park Heights is in Queenstown. Most “hills” around New Zealand look like nothing, but each one can be a huge mountain in its own right. I think it’s because you often see these “hills” in the context of the giant mountains of the Southern Alps, so everything is both in-context and beyond-context. This old North Korean prison was a movie set for a rather horrible Disney movie from the 80’s. I’m a movie fan, and I just can’t recommend it!

A Young Ninja at Mt. Fuji

While in Tokyo

I’ve been to Tokyo about five times before I ever decided to go visit Mt. Fuji. I suppose I didn’t know how close it was! It’s really just a short drive and there are countless good angles from all the small villages around the base.

Daily Photo – A Young Ninja at Mt. Fuji

How cool is this kid? I was exploring this small town around Fujisan and all of the sudden, this kid jumped out of the shadows and started doing all kinds of crazy moves! I pulled out my camera, then he really started going nuts, performing all kinds of wild maneuvers at me. It was so awesome!

Red Prayers

A Red Votive

I think it’s interesting how Asian cultures do the sort of thing you see below and Western cultures use votives. I think it’s also interesting how both are red. It seems to be a fairly convenient way for the masses to contribute and be part of the movement.

Daily Photo – Red Prayers

Many temples throughout China have these hanging just outside the main entrance. People that go visit buy them and write little thoughts or hopes or prayers on them and let them hang in the breeze outside.

Hills beyond hills over Moke Lake

Looking for a good chopper pilot in Queenstown?

I recommend Choppy! You can see more about her and Over the Top on their website!

Daily Photo – Hills beyond hills over Moke Lake

We took a helicopter ride up and around Queenstown and tried going down a few new valleys. This spot is pretty much right over Moke Lake and that tiny lake you see there is Lake Kirkpatrick. I’ve made that drive a few times below and it’s always beautiful.

I think one very unusual thing about this place is that perfectly conical mountain that is also green. When you get that kind of shape in nature, it’s rarely green — usually some kind of a dirty brown (easier to erode). But now the vegetation will help this to keep its awesome shape a long time.
