On the Japanese PhotoWalk

Stuck In Customs Internet Research Team

I wonder who in the audience can find her YouTube channel? A great challenge for this seemingly can-find-anything audience here!

Daily Photo – On the Japanese PhotoWalk

Here’s one of the gals that was running around with us during the crazy photowalk in Tokyo, Japan. I had no idea what was happening for most of the photowalk, but there were awesome sights and people everywhere. It turns out that this gal is a fairly major YouTube star in Japan, and she doesn’t speak a lick of English. I have completely forgotten her name, but I remember looking up her YouTube channel and being completely flummoxed by what was happening.

The Quiet Sea on a Perfect Night

Perfect Water Out There

It gets pretty hot here in Dubai most of the year, so that Arabian Sea comes in very handy. Either you’re inside, slathered with AC, or if you’re outside, you should be in that water! If you go out and keep swimming in a straight line, you’ll end up in Iran.

Daily Photo – The Quiet Sea on a Perfect Night

This is the view from the topside bar at the Four Seasons at Jumeirah Beach. These places are so intricately and perfectly designed. People that can design these sort of geometric landscapes that incorporate gardens and pools and beaches — that is a pretty cool skill. It’s one of those strange art-forms that I really appreciate, mostly because I find it to be completely unfathomable.

Approaching a Small Island in Vietnam at Sunset

The Ballad of Ho Chi Minh

The airlines played THIS song for us upon arrival… and as you might suspect from what you read below, we were all singing along!

Daily Photo – Approaching a Small Island in Vietnam at Sunset

I was only in Ho Chi Minh for a few nights before jumping on a plane with some friends to go visit Phu Quoc. There were 5 of us on the plane and it was a Friday night. They didn’t serve any alcohol on the plane, so we bought a whole bottle of whiskey before the flight and just passed it around like pirates. It was insanely fun… and we were all taking photos out the window all the while.

Gliding Over the South Island

BTS Video

Here’s a quick video I made with Google Glass while creating this photo!

Daily Photo – Gliding Over the South Island

I had a wonderful time out in a glider over the middle part (the Canterbury area) of the South Island of New Zealand. I had been learning more and more about currents of air and clouds from my paragliding training, and I learned a lot more on this day. Right under those clouds there is often a vertical shaft of air that is handy if you need some altitude. It’s kind of a revelation to me, really. I guess I thought 99% of wind went north/south/east/west, but there’s just as much that goes up and down… you just don’t feel that bit on the ground.

Daily Photo – Sweet FVJ

I’ve honestly never met a more likable person in my life. I’d be shocked if this guy has any enemies… this is the great Frederick Van Johnson, and he came out during one of our Autumn Workshop events, and it was so great to have him out with us. One day, he was getting me miked up in the Queenstown Gardens, and I took this photo.

Following the Icebreaker

New YouTube Cards

I started adding “Cards” to our YouTube videos. These are those little things under the “i” there on the top right of the video. It’s pretty slick for sure… although I don’t know if people are actually using them or not! Here’s an example below…

Daily Photo – Following the Icebreaker

You can see our shadow there while Hef was flying. Now, this ship you see here is on the Icebreaker, but it was right behind it. When the Icebreaker arrives every year down in Antarctica, it’s a big deal! They they can finally get in some much-needed supplies. All the countries down there generally share space on the ships that bring supplies… there are all sorts of logistics that go into it.

The Best Venice Shooting Time

Missed Venice?

I know we sold out Venice in 48 hours and there were many disappointed people (including some old friends) — sorry about that! Well, to be sure and not miss out on our next one, sign up for the Newsletter.

Daily Photo – The Best Venice Shooting Time

Whenever it started to rain in Venice, I would drop everything and get out there to shoot. Even better, it was just about to get dark so all the little businesses started to turn on their lights. That reflection of the ground simply cannot be beat. Luckily, this cute waitress gal happened to be walking right through the frame, so I was sure to grab a photo of her just as she passed in front of that bright spot.

Elephants on the Move

The Koloss

In a way, these remind me of the Koloss from the Mistborn series, which is a book series I recommend. They were these crazy creatures from the book that just have extra skin that they grow into, and as they get older, it gets super-stretchy and starts to crack. But I’ve always wondered why elephants seem to have so much extra skin!

Daily Photo – Elephants on the Move

The thing that struck me most about the elephants was how silent they were as they moved about. I don’t know what the bottom of their feet are like, but they appear to be super-soft and cushy. I doubt they are, since they can walk on anything, any time, at any temperature. I don’t know how something can be so tough and quiet at the same time!

Moonset in Queenstown

Best App for Moon/Sun Activity?

As far as I know, the best one is the badly-named “The Photographer’s Ephemeris”— and I just noticed on their website they have a desktop version — cool!

Daily Photo – Moonset in Queenstown

I get to see this almost every morning from my studio when the moon sets. Of course, it’s not always at this time of day, but sometimes it is! I’m not one of those hardcore moon guys who knows where the moon is gonna be and stuff. Occasionally though, I have friends around me that know this stuff, and that helps tremendously!

Amazing Shoes in Venice

Cool Shoes from A1923

I was hanging out with Simone Cecchetto and his wife Christina for several days. They design and make these incredible shoes… all handmade in Italy. More info at their website or on their Instagram.

Daily Photo – Amazing Shoes in Venice

We spent a lot of time in these water taxis in Venice. It’s such a fabulous way to see the city. It’s also way easier than walking around. They certainly aren’t inexpensive, so I tried to use every moment on them to capture as many photos as possible!
