This is a new area I discovered near Arrowtown and Queenstown in New Zealand. When the grasses get long in the late summer, they move in the breeze. It’s almost like you can see the wind itself while standing there. Those flying-saucer-shaped clouds are quite rare and are called Lenticulars. When you’re a photographer, you get to collect all sorts of useless information like that.

This spot is well known to people that photograph the Big Sur region a lot, but it remained unknown to me for a very long time! Even though I have shot in the Big Sur area many times, this spot always eluded me. So, when I parked and started the short walk, you can imagine how excited I was to find such a beautiful scene right under my nose!

An ion storm hits Lake Wakatipu here in Queenstown… there are some cool apps you can use to see when big ion storms are coming in. They’re often connected to solar flares and other cosmic activity, and always quite magical to see.

Another must-stop for any road trip across the South Island is a stop along the east coast at the mysterious Moeraki Boulders for a few mornings until the sun is perfect.

This is one of my favorite stops along the road trip up the West Coast of the South Island. I stop here in Hawea and do a bit of random hiking… it’s one of the most beautiful lakes here and it’s just crazy how people only live on about 1% of the lake. The rest of it is wild and feels like it could have been the same way tens of thousands of years ago… it probably was!
