Online Photography Course

Discover the Art of Photography

In this series, you will learn photography in a whole new way!

I’ve spoken with thousands of people who — despite the beginner or even intermediate courses they’ve taken — are still confused about the basic elements of photography. So I developed my own style of teaching based on an artist’s natural instincts of curiosity and discovery which quickly produces dramatic results.

Improve the beauty of your photos within minutes with this free tutorial

This FREE tutorial is a great way to get started with photography, regardless of the type of camera you own. You’ll learn the fundamentals of your camera, how to take your first photos and how to edit them with Adobe Lightroom.

The complete series goes deeper on how to properly compose a photo, finding your artistic style, and improving the quality and beauty of your photos.

Don’t believe these common photography myths

Don’t let these myths keep you from this unique opportunity to improve your photography.

Myth #1 “An expensive camera is required to take beautiful photos.”

You can take beautiful and interesting photos with any type of camera including the one on your phone. You don’t need a particular camera for this tutorial but if you’re in the market for a new camera I can recommend several at different price points.

Myth #2 “You must know everything about your camera before you begin.”

Cameras today are packed with hundreds of features accompanied by an overly complex manual. You can set the manual aside because I will teach you all you need to know to get started.

Myth #3 “Learning photography is too difficult and complex.”

Terms like F-stop, ISO, and Aperture can be intimidating but the concepts are easy once you get over the initial learning curve. We will take things slow, learning as we go, and by the end you’ll be taking photos that will amaze your friends and family.

TREY, the course only go for live once only at the times listed or I can watch them at any time I prefer? Thanks. I am currently working in Okinawa, Japan. So, watching them at Pacific Time will be an issue.
    Johnny

  • http://www.facebook.com/johnny.cheng.7315 Johnny Cheng

I love your blog and your photography style. I have learned a lot from ya. I appreciate all your contribution to the world of photography. If there is chance, you should definitely visit Okinawa, Japan. Amaing island, amazing people and photohraphy! I will be your host.

    Hi Trey,
Once registered and watched, will the videos be available for future review (re-watch), or is this a one time watch? Clear?
    My best,
    Lloyd

  • Phogropathy

There is a “bonus item” downloadable copy of Discover the Art of Photography which I assume is what you’re referring to. You’ll miss out on the Q&A session, but it’ll get you the bulk content which is good.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Yes Llyod – you’ll get a full copy of the four episodes. The only bit that won’t be included for download is the live Q&A part of the online event.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Thank you Johnny – Okinawa is on my list for sure! :)

  • Trey Ratcliff

Yes, you’ll have access to the four episodes if you miss the live bit.

  • Stephen Flournoy

For those of you who are considering this and thinking “I’m just not sure?”, let me tell you…. DO IT! I took Trey’s HDR course and it really was instrumental in starting my photography business. Since then I’ve gotten personal help from Trey from time to time, learned how to produce my own work and even made some money! This is a no brainer.

  • Brent Burzycki

I highly recommend tutorials from Trey. I enjoy learning but hate the time time it takes to learn in most cases. I want a ton of info in a short and concise training period. Trey’s tutorials and online seminars do just this, information overload but in a great way…

I still refer back to the massive amount of information from the HDR tutorial because as I have found as a semi pro, I forget a ton of details when I cannot shoot each and every day.

The price for the information you will get is well worth it. This is a no brainer for all levels of photographers.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Hey thanks Brent – that is a nice thing to say! :)

  • Trey Ratcliff

    Thanks so much Stephen! :)

  • http://twitter.com/DGitalPhoto Daniel DG

Hey Trey, love your website and all this content. If I could only afford 1 post production software for HDR, what would you recommend? I have photomatix, lightroom and photoshop already, but what about Nik, Topaz, OnOne? which one will give me the most value/creativity for my money? Thanks! I wish I had the money to sign up for this.

  • Trey Ratcliff

That’s a tough one… I guess Nik Color Efex pro will give you the best bang for the buck, although any are good!

  • http://www.maugiart.com/ Noah J. Katz

If your on the fence whether to take this course or not… JUST DO IT! Trey is a great teacher with a ton of knowledge and background. He’s also such a great, nice and down to earth guy. I had followed him for about 2 years when he offered a course in early 2010 and it was such a great time and I learned a ton of stuff. Techniques I either still use today or have morphed into my own style. I even won the main prize of a Drobo. These new prizes are sweet!

  • Trey Ratcliff

Thanks Noah!! That is very nice of you. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/matt.jc.omeara Matt O’Meara

Is this a webinar Trey or is it videos that we can download and or watch at anytime?

  • http://www.maugiart.com/ Noah J. Katz

No problem Trey. Gotta give props to those who’ve helped me along my journey. I think I meant 2011 though. Time seems to be flying these days.

  • Trey Ratcliff

If you register for the live webinar, then yes, you can download the videos later.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sashikanth-R-Chintla/549227645 Sashikanth R Chintla

Trey I am super excited to see this new class from you. I was an average photographer till i stumbled across your HDR class, my photography style has improved leaps and bounds after going through the HDR class. I copied your composition on the San Jose Church and many people taught it was your photography :).

I am sure this class will make me even better. I highly recommend others to take your class which is not expensive when compared to thousands of dollars one will spend in the journey of learning photography. I am on and waiting for the first session. Sashikanth

  • Corey

I spent thousands of dollars on camera equipment and all my pictures are just one really dark eyeball…I even tried photoshop, but no matter if I take a picture of other people with great big smiles…no matter, just eyeball photos. Maybe I need to learn HDR instead?

  • BuddyP

7PM is 9PM Central US (my timezone) and 10PM eastern. How long will the sessions last? I know we can view them later, but I am old and must get my beauty sleep (although it is not working so far.)
    BuddyP

  • Carol Desch

    Trey,
For the “Bring a Friend” offer, do we both have to watch from the same location? For example, if my friend lives in another state, can we both watch from our respective homes? Or should we have two separate registrations?
Also, is there any specific hardware or software needed? I use a Mac and don’t want to encounter any “PC only” issues.

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

Depends on how long the Q&A portion goes. Probably 1 – 2 hours each evening.

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

You do not need to be in the same location. If you register along with a friend we will send you a special code so the friend can register themselves. All you really need is a camera. Adobe Lightroom is encouraged but not required.

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

This course will show you how to spin the camera around 180 degrees. Should drastically improve your shots. ;-)

  • John A Schwamm Sr

    Good Evening Trey,

I am huge fan of you work and will soon retire to exploring different parts of our world. I recently returned to the wonderful hobby of photography after a 25 year hiatus. I really do want to register and take advantage of this outstanding opportunity. Unfortunately, my (remaining()work schedule may not permit me to be on-line during these specific hours. Is the downloadable copy of the tutorial a video or is the text? Thanks you and your team for this wonderful opportunity to learn from a world renowned photographer!

  • http://www.facebook.com/barry.coe.980 Barry Coe

Hi Trey, will you consider down the track doing this again on a different time zone as i am based in Australia and would love to do this seminar?

  • TV Junkie

Any chance of providing these webinar seminars during EU friendly times? Thanks.

  • Jacob Reiter

    Hey Trey!
Im going to a scenic part of Oregon (Columbia Gorge) from July 7th to July 20th.
I have always felt like my composition has not been the greatest, but because I will be there before the webinar what simple thing do you suggest I do to make it easiest to fix the composition through photoshop once I learn more from the webinar.

    Thanks! Jacob

  • Tomáš Bartosz

Hi Trey, i just want to ask you, will be possible to buy this tuts later? Because i don’t have so much free moneys for it. But when i saw the spot at YT it will be great!!

  • Tawni

I have followed you on Google+ for over a year and love your work Trey, I’ve even made it into some of your hangouts. I’ve taken classes and there are still things that haven’t clicked for me. I just registered and am looking forward to this opportunity to learn from you!

  • Mujtaba Qadri

    Hey Trey,

I was looking for a friend to join me for this class, and since you have a $199 bundle on offer (which is great), let me invite Mr. Lashari to the class.

    Thanks,
    Muji

  • Matthew Cranley

Will the Tutorials be available for purchase and download after the fact, as in not part of the registration?

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

Yes, but they will not have the Q&A portion which will be a significant piece of this live webinar.

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

We’re not sure. We won’t make a final decision until after this event is over.

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

We’re not sure. We won’t make a decision until after this event is over.

  • Matthew Cranley

Thanks Curtis, it will be a shame to miss the live Q&A but local time doesn’t suit as I will be at work, but I understand that these things can not be suited to everyone

  • Carlos

Trey, for this live webimar, in which resolution will be, in case my internet gets slow

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

It will be available in both 360 and 720.

  • Morgane Kerguelen

What can I say, I discovered your site 2 days ago and since then I have been STUCK on ‘Stuck in customs’!
I really enjoy your work, your photos are Trey, Trey belles (sorry, I couldn’t resist!), I have the impression that I am at the Musée d’Orsay, admiring all my favorite painters’ chefs-d’oeuvre.
I am a truly beginner but I can’t wait to learn and try to make beautiful photos, my camera is feeling neglected ;)

  • http://www.Flickr.com/photos/richtpt Richtpt

I will be out of town then. :( Glad they will be available for purchasing later! I’m very excited about this!

  • http://www.facebook.com/juli.lee Juli Lee

Would love to and got so excited but the price is just above my budget. :(

  • Trey Ratcliff

    Thanks Morgane! :)

  • http://www.nymtec.com jacobjanzen

I’ve taken other courses, and this one sounds fun too! …Would anyone want to register with me for the bring a friend?

    Please let me know!

    Thanks,

I’ll register with you for the bring a friend.

  • http://twitter.com/wakemktg Andrew Wakefield

Will you be talking about the Sony NEX-7 and all it’s crazy menus! NEX is a great camera just feel like I’m not getting the most out of it.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Sure thing – I can show on video how to do this during Q&A — just be sure to remind the hosts :)

  • http://www.nymtec.com jacobjanzen

    Cool. Do you have paypal?

  • Dawn Dunsmore Lowe

Trey, Trey, I cry salty tears **sniff sniff* for I shall not be able to attend due to the fact that I am on EST and get up at 5am, so a 10pm start is a bit late for me, as I am sure it will not be a short class! Perchance you will consider an EST friendly time in the (hopefully near) future??
Love you, your photos, your great adventure to NZ-the green eyed dragon appears-will hope for the best for next time!
Meanwhile, I will die a 1000 deaths on the nights of the 31st-3rd.
    :)

  • Dawn Dunsmore Lowe

This makes me wonder…what time will YOU be on for this event??

  • Dawn Dunsmore Lowe

Ok now I REALLY want to join, how long will the sessions be?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sandra.l.maxwell Sandra LeBaugh Maxwell

anyone else looking for a friend to sign up with? I am not for sure how to do it but I am sure they will walk us through it.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Dawn,

I’ll address your comments as best I can. Trey will be “on” through the whole event. During the broadcasting of the videos, we will be taking questions for the Q&A, which will immediately follow the video. As far as the time, it is a tad late for some people on the East Coast, but we have to always strike a balance with our entire audience. It’s better for one coast to have to maybe stay up a little later, which is at least an option for them, than to have an entire coast have to miss because they won’t be home from work. It’s always a balance between the two.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Juli,

Drop me an email at luke@stuckincustoms.com. You never know – maybe I’ll be able to hook you up with someone for the Bring-A-Friend option.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

Very nice of you, Muji! If you and can email me at luke@stuckincustoms.com, I’ll coordinate between you and Baqir.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Hi Tomas,

Yes, we will make the tutorials available for download purchase. It will not have the live Q&A portion, though. We’re not sure exactly when this will happen, but keep an eye on the site – I’m sure it will be a big announcement.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Jacob,

If you’re still working on your composition (which I suppose can be said of all of us, all of the time) probably the best thing you can do is up your resolution and capture as much as you can. You might also want to check out the composition eBooks that are available at Flatbooks:

    http://www.flatbooks.com/composing-the-photo-bonus-edition/
    http://www.flatbooks.com/the-tuesday-composition/

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Hi John,

You will have access to download the tutorial videos, just not the live Q&A.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lamorin Lisa Ann Morin

I am brand new at photography and just bought myself a brand new camera that I dont even know how to use yet. Is this webinar for me ? How long those each episode last ? Is it available in Eastern Canada ?

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

    Approximately 2 hours each

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

This webinar is perfect for you. Trey will walk you through how to setup your camera and begin to take great photos! Each episode contains a tutorial and extended Q&A, together they will last about 2 hours each evening. It should be available worldwide with no issues.

  • Dawn Dunsmore Lowe

I totally understand! Can make everyone happy :) I was just curious what time zone Trey would be on while we are on 7-10 here in the US…

  • Dawn Dunsmore Lowe

OK one last question before I commit….I am I suppose a advanced amateur (always more to learn for sure!), will I still benefit from the 1st class? Aside from basic camera setup will more advanced options be covered? Thanks so much!

  • Trey Ratcliff

Yes yes – it will move into the intermediate as well :) (and you can always get ALL your money back if not happy!) :)

  • Dawn Dunsmore Lowe

    Sold..Thanks Trey!

  • http://www.facebook.com/devibarnard Star Devi

I love your work Trey. Just found out about you on Pinterest…

  • http://www.facebook.com/maxine.martinez.503 Maxine Martinez

  • Michael McDougle

  • Tomáš Bartosz

    Thank you :)

  • http://twitter.com/sunkat sunkat (Kat S)

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

    Of course!

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

Best way is for one of you to pay for the Bring-A-Friend version of the tutorial and have the other one PayPal over the money for their share.

  • Philippe Brantschen

Hi Trey… I was in your last webinar for your HDR Style couple of month ago… is this course maybe usefull additional to this HDR course as well or is it just unnecessary ? What do you think ?

  • Jeff Ober

I registered for two, thinking my wife or a friend will want to do this, too. What if I get a few friends who respond? Can I just have them look onto my computer or will I need to register them all?

  • Trey Ratcliff

Well I will be talking about Different Stuff this time for sure. This is aimed at Intermediate and Beginner subjects, so some stuff will be easy for you, but I think you’ll see many new things you’ve never seen before… and, of course, as you know, you can always have all your money back if you aren’t happy! !! :)

  • Tom Weishaar

    How long is each session…

  • http://www.graffitivisuals.com/ Bill Dodd

But think of how amazing your dominant eyeball would be, in HDR :)

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

    Approximately 2 hours each evening

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

It would be best if each person had a paid registration.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kristiqn.kruskhov Kristiqn ‘Kisho’ Kruskhov

Will the tutorials will be up online after they air because I won’t be able to watch them exactly at this time. I’m asking this because you’ve helped me a lot all this time and also being such a big inspiration to me. Cheers :)

  • Craig Adams

Hi Trey the sessions sound great. However, will I be able to apply the information you provide about processing within Lightroom to Aperture. I have just recently started to use Aperture after years of using iPhoto.

  • sanjay kumar

If somebody is looking for a friend to sign up to avail the discount, let me know. Drop me a message on g+

  • Trey Ratcliff

Yes – it should be totally transferable to Aperture! :)

I probably will do one here at some point in NZ — in fact, I’m sure I will! :)

  • Andy Adams

confused about the “Bring a Friend”, is it a friend sharing your computer or can they be at a different location?

  • http://www.facebook.com/gwen.shannontaquet Gwen Shannon Taquet

    GREAT! I can’t wait:)

  • Trey Ratcliff

The friend can be on their own computer – no worries :)

  • Jignashu Parikh

Are you still interested? We can take this together?

  • Kevin Webb

Yes Trey a huge welcome to New Zealand – it’s great to have you and your family here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Psychoarts Greg Feil

Will I be able to download each nights webinar the following day? Geting up for work at 3am eastern may make it hard for me to stay awake ;).

  • Pieter Pretorius

    Hi Trey,
I did your HDR course and loved it.

Am I right that this will be at 12h00 Australian EDT?? Might clash with work then!!!

    Pieter.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brendan.jordan.92 Brendan Jordan

Hey trey, will this be available later to download as I wont have the time to watch it? Also heard you are or you have moved to NZ, i live in Australia, so welcome neighbour1 Im inspired by your work, keep it up!

  • Helen Genevere

Looks very tempting. Sadly the times are far too early in the morning for me – I’m in South Australia. I look forward to a downloadable version. Cheers.

  • Teemu Haila

Hi, I’d love to attend but also live in EU and this will be in the middle of the night for me. Videos are cool but the Q&A would be even cooler! Any chance to maybe repeat the session at a later date with international timezones in mind? Keep up the good work!

  • eric

So the programs are about an hour each night. If I miss a session I can watch it the next day (or any day) as a download – but the Q&A will not be recorded. Can I watch as often as I like. When are the class notes distributed. And, where can I find the time table of events.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kelly.h.leech Kelly Haight Leech

Question- slightly confused about how the webinar works if you cannot view it live. I will be travelling those days but would love to register now and be able to watch at a later date?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kelly.h.leech Kelly Haight Leech

Just to clarify- the part. I’m most confused about- if you register for the webinar but do not watch it live, th Q&A will not be viewable at all? Also- any time limit to view the classes (I will be away more than a week). Thanks

  • eric

I apologize if this is answered already but what is the time of day for the programs.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Thanks Tawni! See you in here soon! :)

If you register as a single attendee are you still eligible to win one of those fantastic cameras?

  • Nicole Taylor

I am excited to sign up for the course and was wondering – if you attend as an individual w/ out a friend are you still included in the chance to win one of those amazing cameras?

  • http://DailyConcern.com/ Curtis Simmons

The cameras from Adorama are exclusive to the Bring a Friend option. However, you are still eligible to win any of the other amazing prizes, including the Lytro camera.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

You receive a code that you send to anyone you want. That code purchases a full version of the tutorial.

Trey: Would love to take your classes but like Juli it’s just not in my budget. Signing up with a friend won’t work either. Saving my pennies and hope to register for one of your future sessions. Your photos are over the top. Love every single one of them. Photography is my second love..

  • http://www.facebook.com/kristiqn.kruskhov Kristiqn ‘Kisho’ Kruskhov

It’s going to be awesome but the problem is not that I’m not sure but I don’t have the money. All that I can say whoever is going to the webinar is a lucky guy. Have fun :)

  • eriksmithdotcom

I can’t do this now (lack of free-time & $$$) :-( but I would love to buy the series later, when I get more of both things. Is this possible?

  • Pieter Pretorius

How soon will the copies be available if we register?

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

We haven’t yet set up the backend for that, so it’s tough to say, but probably as soon as the entire course is completed.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

We will have them available for purchase at some point, just not the live Q&A session.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ginam Gina Mellado

Looks awesome! Does anyone want to be my “bring a friend” buddy so we can register for the cheaper price?

Any chance of selling the group of video’s at a later date? I would be very interested. Thanks

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.bellamy.5 Joshua Bellamy

I see this question was already answered early on this board. I look forward to the release at a later date :)

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Masuma,

The course is $149, or $199 for two registrants if you know someone else who would like to take the course as well.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Tiya,

Have you considered trying to link up with someone for the “Bring A Friend” option? It brings the price down to $199 for two people, which is $99.50 each.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Sandy,

We are going to offer the course as a download at some point, but if you wanted to have access to the “live” Q&A portion, you could register now and just download them later. The Q&A will only be available to people who register now and won’t be sold as part of the download product – but everyone who registers now will always have access to them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lwayres Lauren Ayres

I’d love to register and it’s worth the $150 to me, but I currently use Photoshop Elements (I know I know, I should invest in the real thing). I also don’t have Adobe Lightroom. Are these requirements? Or will I still benefit from the training class without them – enough so that it would be worth the $150 even without the same editing equipment. Thanks!

  • Trey Ratcliff

They are not requirements — and everything I do in Adobe Lightroom can be done in the RAW importer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MILLER74MD Mark Miller

I purchased your HDR course and really learned a lot. I’ve watched it several times and still get something new out of it. I enjoy hearing your thoughts on photography and art in general. I regret not attending your lecture at Kent State when you were in Ohio! My schedule won’t allow me to do the live course but I’m hoping it will be available to purchase in the future! Best wishes Trey. I really enjoy all of your work and the site.

  • Melody Migas

I’m in. But if we miss it Live, are we still eligible to win stuff? Like do you need to be present to win?

I just want to say this was a great class. I missed 1 class and fell asleep during another due to it being a little late on the east coast (and having a job that starts at 6AM). I cant wait to catch up on what I missed. His Lightroom demos were great, and translate well to Aperture. I just wish there were Aperture presets too, I would get them in an instant! The Q&A was great too! Thanks a lot Trey and team!

  • David Rosser

    Trey –

First of all, thank you for your down to earth, practical teaching style and techniques and most importantly your generousity. Without question, you have amazing talents – both technical and artistic which I will never have.

I have been a photo enthusiast for most of my 48 years and thoroughly enjoy seeing large, beautiful, high-resolution photos of amazing places.

I bought my first film camera (Pentax K1000) as a teenager and I won my first digital camera back in the late ’90’s and have had dozens since then. I picked up a Nikon D70 in 2004 shortly after my first child was born. Then a D80 and now a D90. I really enjoy shooting pictures of my kids and landscapes on our annual vacations.

I’ve taken a handful of photography classes over the last few years and every time I get caught up in the “rules” – rule of thirds, symmetry, balance, etc. And the constant mantra that you have to be in “manual” mode to get any good shots.

Well, a huge thank you for giving us permission to break the rules, relax, and enjoy photography without the hang ups. I think that was the most valuable part of this week’s class for me. I’m looking forward to shooting many pictures and finally finding my own style without the hang ups.

Looking forward to the next time you offer a class – you can bet I’ll be the first to sign up!

    Regards,
    David Rossser

Hi Trey and all the Stuck in Customs people.

It was a great 4 nights of learning and discovery for me. I can hardly wait for the next one.
Shooting mostly indoor sports and family with cropped bodies (40d, 1D Mk1, 1d Mk11 and Nikon d7000)
I would like to get more into landscapes and small objects with a full frame camera. What would you suggest for a good
used body in Nikon? Am always interested in your art and views on things. Keep up the good work and the best to you all.

  • Ken Schlessel

Thanks Trey and everyone associated with the Art of Photography series. I enjoyed the learning experience tremendously and hope to get an invite to NZ so I can learn and experience more artistic photography. All my best Ken Schlessel.

Great shows Trey & Co., I missed a night but look forward to downloading when available. The Q & A portion was killer and the Photoshop techniques on the last show… 3 thumbs up! It has to be said though… Have you ever watched the BBC Earth Series narrated by Sir David Attenborough? He has a strangely hypnotic way of putting me to sleep when I watch the Earth shows in the evenings, well… you have a somewhat meditative effect as well haha. I couldn’t make it through the Q & A to hear who won everything! Thanks for the great tips & tricks and helping me get some sleep Friday night & ‘Grats to all the winners!

  • Kayla Naff

I’m in the same work hours boat. 6 a.m.Central.,.but I I did catch 2.5 classes, until I catch up, and they were great! I thank you Trey. I can now put down my canon xsi for dummies book for awhile and actually pack for my trip lol. I please excuse any typos, I’m on my phone lol.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Thanks for all the wonderful comments! :)

  • Lorena Pangtay

What a wonderful tutorial! Congratulations, Trey and Company! Of course, now I am trying to apply all that I learned, and I realized I can handle the editing in the different tools (Lightroom, Photoshop, and Photomatix), but I have huge gaps on the process of exporting my pictures from one to another. Unfortunately, the great amount of notes I wrote during the four nights are not much help. … one question, Trey.. How do you create the export presets you used to send your pictures to Bridge and Photomatix? :)

  • Amanda DevilBabi Moore

This was an amazing oppourtunity to sit and learn with one of my hero photographers! Thankyou so much for this Trey, I am going to miss sitting down with you daily :) Cant wait to receive the links for the videos, so i can relive all the fun!

  • Carlos

Being my first live webminar was a blast, I missed the last class due a storm but I did catch a little bit the next day. I´m just waiting for the link to watch it again, this course gave me the opportunity to see Mr. Trey in action, and learn about him and the techniques but most important the way he sees an image, Thanks, this really mean a lot to me.

  • Tye Kushner

How long are eposides 2, 3 and 4?

  • http://ccombe.tumblr.com/ Chris Combe

hi I am 3/4 of the way through watching these videos and at least video 3 has some sound / video sync issues specifically when Trey is out and about taking photos e.g. the guy with the glass balls or in the food shops.. in VLC I could fix the sync by setting the audio sync to -2.700 seconds, however I quickly need to set it back to zero when you are back at home doing the post processing..

now I am a reasonably tech savvy person so it’s not the end of the world but it is worth fixing and getting a new copy available for people watching at home.. the sound is fine and in sync when your post processing..

thanks again, loving the videos I just thought you would be keen to get this feedback before it is too wide spread..

  • http://twitter.com/Cybergabi Cybergabi

Trey – Why do you call this the Art of Photography? Most of this first issue is about post-processing in Lightroom, little about photography. You basically show how to make a badly conceived and badly framed photo bearable by adding some digital effects to it – a kind of ICU for wounded shots. That’s not what I consider the Art of Photography.

Start with teaching people to see: How to choose their subject (that bridge behind you looked much more interesting from that cliff than the old tree), how to frame their shots, how to choose the best angle, how to make a photo that is interesting from the beginning, no matter what post-processing you choose, and how to expose properly.

In terms of camera settings you haven’t even begun to explain the absolute basic triangle of aperture, exposure, and ISO. Are you even aware of it? Why do you let your camera choose an ISO 6400 setting in bright daylight, and then expose an still object at 1/4000 sec? You could easily have photographed this in ISO 400 at f/8 with a 1/125 second exposure. Instead, you chose to ‘heal’ this in post-processing by applying noise filters. That’s very sloppy for a photography teacher, to say the least.

Oh, and your repeatedly mentioned f/8-will-put-everything-in-focus rule? That may apply to inanimate objects in daylight. This is the worst rule you can teach a beginner who sets out to shoot moving objects in low-light situations – or even still objects without a tripod.

No offense intended, but if the rest of the series is just as sloppily conceived, it doesn’t seem to be worth that kind of money, particularly since much better beginners’ tutorials are available for free.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

    Hi Chris,

We’ve corrected this issue – please get in touch with me at support@stuckincustoms.com so I can get you a replacement.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

Thanks for taking the time to give this feedback. Keep in mind that there are four episodes, and you’re making a lot of calls about the series based on the “introductory” first episode.

Trey’s advice about f8 ALWAYS comes with the disclaimer that this is a “when-in-doubt” mode valuable for beginners who are trying to juggle learning many, many things.

You’re welcome to give the course a try, and if you aren’t happy with it, a refund is not a problem. However, it does sound like you are advanced beyond the scope of this course, and that you don’t enjoy the idea of/amount of post-processing that Trey does.

Feel free to get in touch with me at luke@stuckincustoms.com if you want to discuss further.

  • http://www.rebeccaborg.com/ Jason Borg

Awesome, thanks for making the first episode free! Someday perhaps I’ll have enough money to see the rest of the episodes :)

  • Peter W.

    Hi there!

Great videos for beginner photographers… I like the preview and free chapter. Like the simplicity of learning with this.
One question before buying: will i get all the source images from the video to work with ?

Thanks and keep up good work!

    Hi Peter,

This tutorial doesn’t come with source images – the teaching takes a different approach from the HDR Tutorial (which does include them) and they aren’t needed to utilize the course.

Trey / Team, I tried to buy the full package with no hope. It’s asking me for a Paypal account, which I don’t have. When tried to create an account, I didn’t find my country in the list (Egypt). Can you please help?

After watching episode 1 a few times, I bought my copy of the course. My second SIC product, I saw The World in HDR at B&N and snatched it up without hesitation.

The workshop you purchased before is a totally different product and isn’t offered anymore. Please drop me a line at luke@stuckincustoms.com.

Just bought the whole series, can’t wait to watch it after viewing the first episode!
Thx for making these high quality tutorials!!!

I’ve got a 4th Myth for you. You don’t need to use expensive commercial software. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING you can do in Expensive Commercial software can be done with Free Open Source Software. Still I must thank you for sharing your techniques so openly, and the techniques you teach using Commercial Software can be transferred and used using FOSS.

I found the getting started video exciting and so I purchased the tutorials. However, I was disappointed with this course and I agree with Cybergabi’s comment below. Except for using f/8 stop and taking images in raw format, it didn’t teach me anything new. If photoshopping images and post processing in lightroom is what you would call ‘the art of photography’, this course is ill-conceived. You could have simply mentioned lightroom/photoshop tutorial instead. Also, the videos are huge in size and it took hours to download. It failed multiple times, adding to my frustration. I will be happy if you could at least do a partial refund.

  • Trey Ratcliff

Hey there – yes – if you’re familiar with the concepts of f stops and how to manipulate RAWs, this course may be too basic for you… I’ll have the team get you a full refund ! :) No worries! One of the more advanced courses may appeal to you – like the 11 hour HDR post-processing class, for example.

  • http://twitter.com/bharathim bharathim

Trey, instead of a refund can you sign me up for the HDR course instead?

  • Trey Ratcliff

Hey yes – absolutely – let me copy/paste this to our team and they’ll see to it! :)

I bought episodes 2 & 3 as individual purchases. I would like to buy episode 4. How do I go about it? I don’t want to buy the entire series again.
My previous programs purchases (including HDR) were great. I’m about to buy the landscape tutorial.

    Hi Jacques,

Drop me an email at support@stuckincustoms.com and I’ll get you set up.

While I found the information very useful (I am through episode 3), I find that not having sample RAW files to practice the techniques a flaw in the program. I have more than the basics of photography down, but was very interested in the lightroom techniques. Also, the basic techniques were repeated over an over again and there should be more variation – not enough advanced techniques. Maybe a course on that would be helpful. I was considering some of the other programs, but now I am not sure.

  • http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ Luke Lakatosh (SIC Support)

The other tutorials all include RAW files. For people just starting out, adding software requirements needed to work with NEF files is outside of the scope of a beginner course. It sounds like one of the more advanced courses would be more appropriate for you.

The short version is that if you can easily deal with NEF files, generally the expectation is that you’re advanced enough that either you don’t need the exact image to use the information, or a beginner course such as this is starting lower than your skill level.

(aware that you have emailed me, but posting for clarification for others.)

  • Chris Giammona

    Luke

I can certainly see your point of view about the advanced courses. But, to say that adding software requirements is outside the scope of this course is a bit silly given that half the course is Lightroom processing. In that case, the course should be adjusted to simply reflect photography basics.
