Daily Photo – Waiting at the airport in Antarctica

Well, there's not exactly an airport terminal there… most people stay inside those huge vehicles to stay warm, but I got out to go on a little photo adventure. I had woken up about 4 AM (it never gets dark there in the summer) and stumbled out of bed to get ready… it was one of those situations where you end up waiting for a few hours at the airport and you wonder why you didn't get more sleep! But, I was in Antarctica! So I used every possible minute to run around and take photos.

Is it just me or is the photo missing?

It’s not you Klaus. These days a large number of photographers label themselves as ‘fine art photographers’. The bottom line is most fail in the first instance – ie the most fundamental of visual design – composition – insist on thirds when in fact it’s all about the ‘hero’ and that then is supported by other visual data. If one wants to create harmony for example then place in the centre – go figure! On the other hand if one wants to create tension then use visual elements to ‘push’ the hero (toward the edge) and/or use other visual elements to create so…this is only one example – It takes many years of ‘correct’ learning to understand this and put into practice. Google Visual Gestalt. Get rid of the camera club sub and buy books and online training on Graphic Design…many elements to learn that photography training is but a poor cousin of… Then one will learn to master the visual art forms. Here’s links to two of the photgraphic masters that most graphic designers would be proud to give thumbs up http://www.brettwestonarchive.com/portfolios http://www.atgetphotography.com/The-Photographers/Minor-White.html

  • What a crazy adventure! Antarctica is now the only continent I have not visited, I think the cold will always keep me away. There is something beautiful in the stark barrenness though, but I am leaning more towards Iceland. 😉
