I had a wonderful time out in a glider over the middle part (the Canterbury area) of the South Island of New Zealand. I had been learning more and more about currents of air and clouds from my paragliding training, and I learned a lot more on this day. Right under those clouds there is often a vertical shaft of air that is handy if you need some altitude. It’s kind of a revelation to me, really. I guess I thought 99% of wind went north/south/east/west, but there’s just as much that goes up and down… you just don’t feel that bit on the ground.
