The Runner of Blades

Thursday Night Hangout

Join us on Thursday!

Time: Thursday 7 PM PT (Your World Time)
Where to watch: www.Vidcastnetwork.com
Topic: Gear Talk! The new Nikon Mirrorless and more… Note, I usually don’t talk about gear… I’m more into the art, but this next generation of cameras is interesting to me. And, I’ll have one of the great experts joining me, +Gordon Laing and some others too. We always open it up to the public too towards the end for Q&A and general hangout fun-nonsense and stuff… :)

People with personal agendas

This doesn’t happen here on the blog… all you guys are cool and don’t really do this sort of thing, but it happens a lot on Google+. See this thread about this topic.

Daily Photo – The Runner of Blades

More and more cities are giving me that feel of Blade Runner. It’s such a great movie… well, the first half is great. It drags a little after that. Okay okay I know that is blasphemy… just my opinion and everything. I know I should not say such a thing…

Anyway, this is a very trendy place in Beijing. There are many trendy places, all futuristic, all full of cool shopping and restaurants, all great for photography!

We have a great new eBook – it’s beautiful, educational, and fun. I think you’ll get a lot out of it. Pop over to Flatbooks.com now to get a copy and download immediately!

Here’s what’s inside:

- Learn the history of the square format
- Learn to capture for square and edit with square in mind
- Tutorials for Cropping, Making Vertoramas, and adding borders to your images
- Read an interview case study with Matt Toynbee
- Learn about Holga lenses
- 50+ Pages

Other New Flatbooks Authors

There are so many things happening with Flatbooks.com that I can barely keep up! We have Ben Wilmore writing a new book which should be done pretty soon. Besides Ben, we have all kinds of people writing them now, like Lisa Bettany, Jessica Ambats, Jaime Ibarra, and several others.

And don’t forget about Ron Martinsen’s eBook on Printing, which is another new release.

Daily Photo – Girl Outside Restaurant

I normally don’t re-process photos. Most of you may know this about me. But, I went over to have a little session with Jaime Ibarra (at the same time I talked him into writing an eBook for us!), and I took a few photos with me to work on. This is one of them. He has a very interesting technique, and I thought this would be a good candidate.

I found this girl sitting outside of a restaurant. There’s a dead time around 3 to 4 PM… to late for lunch and too early for dinner. I suppose she worked in the restaurant and was just taking a break…

Two Paths

Ignite Interview

A few nights ago I was interviewed at the Ignite event in Steamboat Springs. I usually don’t talk about the business stuff – I prefer the discussions within the sphere of art – but this was a business-oriented function. Anyway, there’s a bit of that in here… Enjoy!

Daily Photo – Two Paths

This path around Crater Lake winds this way and that. It occasionally opens up to a wide vista where I can see the lake and morning sun. But the path itself was quite nice with the sun slicing in through the early-yellow leaves.

You might remember this from the video I made while here a few weeks ago. As usual, you can find that video and more on my YouTube channel!

The Canals of Lijiang at Night

Controversial Car Photos

I asked an innocent question about cars… and I got way more responses than expected. See this crazy Google+ thread!

Daily Photo – The Canals of Lijiang at Night

There must be a hundred little canals spread here and there through the old town. There are so many opportunities for photos! This is what we call a target-rich environment.

This is the town I was in with Tom Anderson — every night we explored a new area. It was an amazing time… I can’t wait to go back some day!

Alone, in Iceland

Hangout #12 Video

This was a really fun one… if you want to see a full-out description with timecodes, you can visit the YouTube page. This one features Thomas Hawk, Erica Joy, Nicole S. Young, Lotus Carroll, Cliff Baise, and James Brandon. Enjoy!

Limited Annum Series Prints – Now Shipping

Now that you can click on a photo, go to SmugMug, and order a print, there’s been a fun increase in print sales. There’s only a few weeks left to get photos from this 2011 series. People are just now getting their shipments, and I’ve been seeing a lot of nice emails going back and forth… many people even take photos of it on their walls and send them to me – thanks! I’m glad you’re enjoying them.

Alone, In Iceland

I went over a high mountain pass that connects one remote part of the country into another. There’s always ice and snow up here. Well, really, it’s mostly ice and very little snow.

This little stone and wood framed home stood desperately alone.

The Pennybacker Bridge

Free Austin PhotoWalk

It’s gonna be a great one! Come get all the details and RSVP on this page! :)

Daily Photo – The Pennybacker Bridge

This place is right by my house…. I really have no excuse for not going up here almost every night! It takes less than 10 minutes to drive and hike up here… sometimes I actually feel bad about my laziness in this area.

It’s usually not too crowded up here. Maybe a couple or two will sit and watch the sunset. It’s a bit dangerous – a sharp cliff that drops off into the freeway on one side and the water on the other.

The Edge of the World

#2 in the app Store!

Stuck On Earth (iTunes Link) hit #2 in the travel section of the app store! Awesome! Thanks again everyone. If you want an update on upcoming versions, watch the Stuck On Earth page in Google+.

The app is still free — all I ask is that you tell your friends…. not once or twice, but more than that! Thanks :)

On DTown

I recently went out to Florida to visit Scott Kelby and see his setup there. While in the studios, I did an episode of D Town with my friend RC Concepcion. It was great fun, as you’ll see below!

Daily Photo – The Edge of the World

This was one of my first times on a black sand beach, and it was even stranger because it was at least eight hours since I had seen another human.

The sound the black sand made was something between normal beach sand and fresh snow. It was a slippery crunch with a slight wet sucking sound as my foot pulled up.

This place is pretty close to one of the recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland. Very close to the town of Vik, this is on the other side of a tall and narrow mountain range. You can kind of drive anywhere. Anywhere. And this looked interesting and kind of scary… so I just drove and drove across the black sand until I got to this place… like something a wicked map designer would make in Skyrim.
